Wanting to do right can expose a painful split: sin remains close at hand even when God's law is known. The law is good, but sin uses it to expose guilt and deepen rebellion. Jesus does what human effort cannot do. He bears sin's punishment, gives His righteousness, and frees those in Him from condemnation and sin's rule. Growth may come suddenly, but it usually unfolds over time as the Spirit changes believers who keep choosing God and resting in Christ's finished victory.

Nineveh once received mercy and repented, but later generations returned to bloody violence and faced God’s promised judgement. Nahum comforts threatened Judah with God’s goodness: He judges proud oppressors and shelters those who take refuge in Him. Jesus is the Judge, Warrior and Deliverer, already defeating sin, Satan and death for His people. These enemies remain until He returns. Repentance cannot wait, because faith in Jesus is the only refuge from the coming judgement.

Jonah would rather flee than see the hated city of Nineveh receive mercy. God pursues His prophet through the storm and great fish, then sends him back with a warning, and the Holy Spirit moves the city to repent. Yet Jonah remains angry, and God confronts his narrow view of grace. Jesus is greater than Jonah: He willingly dies for sinners, rises for their justification, and sends His followers to all nations. God's grace reaches undeserving enemies, so His people must not keep it to themselves.

Christians can meet a hostile culture with angry demands or harmless niceness, but both responses still put too much trust in human behaviour. In Jesus' parable, the proud Pharisee lists his deeds while the tax collector asks God for mercy and goes home justified. Sin reaches deeper than isolated actions, leaving every person guilty and unable to please God. Because God loved His enemies and sent Jesus as the atoning sacrifice, Christians can speak honestly without contempt and graciously without hiding the gospel.

When choosing a church, friendliness, music and convenience can easily outweigh the purpose of preaching. Paul tells Timothy to preach Scripture because God uses His word to teach truth, expose sin, bring correction and train people for good works. Faithful preaching may be uncomfortable. Yet conviction is not its final aim: Jesus heals and restores those whose need has been uncovered. Hearers should test preaching by Scripture, then ask what they have learned and what must change in the week ahead.

People often expect God to prove Himself through visible power, flawless logic, or human achievement. Yet the cross overturns those expectations: Jesus saves through suffering, shame, and apparent defeat. Human pride calls this foolish, but those God calls recognise Christ as His wisdom and power. No one can boast. Christians can stop polishing the gospel for approval and plainly lead others to the cross, trusting God to save through what the world despises.

A farmer scatters precious seed on paths, rocks, thorns and good soil, seemingly wasting what careful farmers would protect. This generous farmer most likely points to Jesus. He spreads the good news far and wide, while the soils describe responses rather than heart conditions people can fix by effort. Those who receive His grace keep returning to Him for understanding, and His sacrifice for their forgiveness bears fruit through changed lives.

Present pain can make God's promised future feel distant and unreal. Romans 8 places that pain inside creation's groaning wait for renewal, when creation will escape decay and God's children will receive redeemed bodies. Jesus died for sinners, and those who trust Him are adopted by God, so present suffering cannot compare with the glory ahead. As believers wait patiently, the Holy Spirit helps in weakness, brings their unspoken needs to the Father, and reveals God's will.

God’s promise does not change when the story moves from Israel to the church. Jesus fulfils the promised rescue, and Peter tells his hearers to repent, believe, and receive baptism. Baptism marks entry into the covenant community, including believers’ children, but neither baptism nor a parent’s faith saves a child. The Lord’s Supper then strengthens those who personally trust Christ, assuring them that His saving work is theirs as they await His return. God’s deliberate grace gives His people strength to serve Him joyfully.

Salvation does not begin with a human decision, but with God's purpose before the world existed. In John 17, the Father gives the Son a people and a task: Jesus must give them eternal life, and the Father promises Him glory. The Father chooses them, the Son dies for them, and the Holy Spirit brings them from spiritual death to faith. Nothing rests on human worth or will. Because Jesus will lose none the Father gives Him, His people can rest securely and give God all glory.
