Rules can seem optional when breaking them appears harmless or useful. Saul obeys God only where the command suits him, then blames his soldiers and dresses disobedience as worship. The bleating sheep expose a deeper rebellion: Saul trusts his own judgement above God, who made him king and seeks loving obedience. Jesus lived in perfect obedience and bore human rebellion on the cross. His grace awakens grateful love that gladly lives under God’s rule.

A busy church can work hard, defend truth, and still grow cold toward Jesus and others. Jesus walks among His churches with complete power and knowledge, so His verdict matters more than public reputation. He praises Ephesus, yet warns that cooled love threatens its existence; He commands the church to remember, repent, and resume what it did at first. Those who overcome receive the tree of life in God’s paradise, a welcome made possible by Jesus’ death on the cross.

Fairness stings when someone else gets the same for less work. In Jesus’ vineyard parable, workers hired for one hour receive the same wage as those who endured the whole day, and the first workers grumble. Yet every worker needed the owner’s invitation, and people outside Israel are the latecomers who receive a place they never earned. Because Jesus bore the just wages of sin, God gives His people eternal life. This grace moves people to show generous mercy to neighbours who seem undeserving.

Idols often begin as good things that quietly take God’s place and start ruling the people who value them. In Ephesus, the gospel threatened Artemis worship, the city’s income, and its shared identity, exposing how deeply worship can shape a culture. Yet idols cannot simply be pushed aside. Because Jesus died to break sin’s mastery, lasting change comes by naming these rivals, turning from them, and replacing their promises with the joy and security found in Christ.

Suffering can feel like climbing in darkness, with no clear end or explanation. Psalm 13 gives that pain honest words as David asks how long God will seem absent, yet directs his grief to the God who knows him. His death and resurrection provide the clearest proof that God has not forgotten His people, so trust, joy, and praise can grow even before suffering ends.

The word Lord can sound like an empty religious title. Psalm 110 pictures Jesus seated at God’s right hand, ruling among enemies who cannot stop His kingdom from advancing. As the perfect priest, Jesus offered Himself once for sin and made His people perfect forever, even as He continues making them holy. His willing people now live under His commands with hope, because He will finally defeat every enemy, including death.

Being religious does not bring anyone all the way to God. Christ brings both distant Gentiles and religious Jews peace through His cross, giving them access to the Father by one Spirit. Together they become a new people: citizens under God’s care, children in His household, and a temple where He lives. Because grace holds the church together, pride and hostility must give way to unity, love, holiness, and sharing the gospel.

Because God rules over all, His people can forgive, pray and love without needing control.

Claims to belong to the worldwide church remain empty without commitment to a local congregation, where Christians share suffering, joy and practical care. Membership means loving submission rather than casual club attendance, where patience, truth and perseverance grow among imperfect people who belong because Christ has loved them perfectly.

Losing home can unsettle memories, belonging and identity. God tells His exiled people to settle in Babylon, seek its good and trust that He controls their story. They must reject comforting lies, listen to God's word and seek Him wholeheartedly while awaiting His promised restoration. Jesus, the promised king from David's family, breaks slavery to sin and brings true peace, hope and God's presence. Identity no longer rests on culture, achievement or approval, but on belonging to Christ in life and death.
