Israel endured four hundred years of silence. Then Gabriel promised elderly Zechariah and Elizabeth a son, John, who would prepare people for the Lord as Malachi had foretold. Their long childlessness was not punishment for sin, because they remained upright and faithful. God keeps working when He seems silent, so faith can rest on His goodness, power, and plan. John’s birth announced that Jesus, God with us, was coming to bring forgiveness and shine God’s tender mercy into darkness, guiding His people towards peace.

Two grieving disciples walk away from Jerusalem, unable to recognise the risen Jesus beside them. He opens the Scriptures so they can understand why the Messiah had to suffer before entering glory. At the table, Jesus gives thanks and breaks bread, and their eyes open to the living, flesh and blood Lord. His resurrection gives authority to His teaching and restores their shattered hope. Sharing a meal can still make His grace, welcome and community visible as people invite others into their lives.

At Jesus’ final Passover meal, bread and wine carry a story of rescue from slavery into the promise of His saving death. The Lord’s Supper looks back to the cross and ahead to the feast Jesus will share in God’s kingdom. It does more than refresh the mind. Sharing one meal joins believers as a reconciled community. The meal makes salvation tangible without becoming magic, and trains them to rest in Jesus’ finished work with joy and gratitude.

People often question Jesus when obeying Him threatens comfort, status, or control. In the temple, religious leaders ask for His authority, but His question about John’s baptism exposes their refusal to seek truth or repent. Jesus’ works point to authority from God; His sacrificial death rescues people who hate God, and His resurrection shows His power over death. Neutrality is not an option. Jesus is Lord, and His words and actions deserve trust, obedience, and authority over every part of life.

Inviting familiar friends feels easy, while welcoming outsiders can feel awkward and uncertain. At a Pharisee's meal, religious leaders use a disabled man to test Jesus, but Jesus heals him and exposes their lack of grace. God's banquet is different. He welcomes people who have not earned a place and cannot repay Him, then sends His people to invite others. Shared meals do not save anyone, but they can make God's grace visible as people hear the gospel among equals.

Prayer can easily become a list of things people want God to fix. Psalm 146 turns attention from personal needs and unreliable human help to praise for who God is. Human help cannot bear that weight. The Creator cares for oppressed, hungry, imprisoned and overlooked people, and His rule never ends. Through Jesus, God has kept His promise to rescue sinners and given hope as His people wait for Christ’s return. Praise continues through every circumstance because God alone can be trusted.

People hunger for food, healing, intimacy and a world put right. In a desolate place, Jesus feeds at least five thousand people from five loaves and two fish, leaving twelve baskets and showing abundance. This meal is not the promised feast itself, but a glimpse that identifies Jesus as God's Messiah and points towards His kingdom. Jesus then begins travelling to Jerusalem, where His death pays the banquet's price; shared meals give a foretaste of the everlasting life He freely provides.

Simon hosts Jesus but withholds the ordinary welcome, while a woman known for her sinful life washes Jesus’ feet with tears and costly perfume. Jesus sees both hearts: the forgiven woman loves deeply, while Simon keeps his distance because he cannot see his own need. Grace makes room for messy people. Around shared tables, people make Christ’s welcome visible by giving time and attention to those they might otherwise avoid. His death and resurrection have made very different people one family.

At Levi’s crowded table, Jesus eats with tax collectors whom religious people treated as hopeless outsiders. His meal makes grace visible: like a doctor seeking the sick, He comes among sinners to offer forgiveness and call them to repentance. No ladder of morality, success, or approval can save. Because Jesus bears condemnation in their place and welcomes needy people into God’s feast, His followers can make their homes and friendships places of grace.

Pain can turn inward until self-pity pushes God from view. Naomi returns to Bethlehem empty and bitter, but God provides through Ruth and Boaz, then places her grandson Obed in her empty lap. Grief and mourning are natural, but self-pity turns suffering into proud mistrust of God. Obed’s family line leads to David and then Jesus, showing that Naomi’s suffering belonged to God’s larger work of redemption and grounding trust in His faithful care.
