Israel stood between rival kingdoms, repeatedly caught in their wars and exposed to cruel rulers. Daniel 11 describes those struggles with striking accuracy, showing that God limits kingdoms and brings rulers down. The chapter then looks beyond that history to a greater enemy who exalts himself above God. His reach will be vast, but his end is certain because no power can overturn God’s purposes. The God who carried His people through earlier darkness will carry them through the future.

Daniel is left pale and helpless before a radiant figure with blazing eyes and bronze limbs. The figure matches John's later vision of Jesus, pointing to Christ before His human birth. Christ is the holy and majestic King, yet His death gives His people access to God without being consumed. Dark forces resist God, but Jesus defeated Satan at the cross. His victory brings strength for present struggles and urgency to call others to repentance.

Cain’s anger begins when God accepts Abel’s heartfelt offering but not his own. God does not reject Cain at that point; He twice gives him room to confess and repent, before and after Cain kills his brother. Cain refuses grace, hides behind self-pity, and learns that the all-knowing God cannot be ignored. His story reaches into broken relationships today, where hatred, withdrawal, and neglect share his loveless spirit. God calls people to come clean, seek forgiveness, and love one another in the light.

Decades of exile could make Israel wonder whether God was harsh or had abandoned His people. Daniel reads Jeremiah's promise, confesses Israel's sin, and prays to the merciful God who keeps His word. Grace leaves no room for demands. God's answer through the angel Gabriel points to Jesus, the anointed one who pays for sin and brings lasting righteousness. Because Jesus opens the way to God, prayer can be humble and confident, shaped by God's good and gracious character.

Knowing the future can feel more frightening than comforting, especially when it includes suffering. Daniel sees successive empires rise, a cruel ruler attack the Jews, and their temple defiled, yet these events unfold as God foretold. Nothing escapes His control. Because Jesus has come and will return to establish His kingdom, God's people can keep their attention on the living hope ahead despite present uncertainty. Daniel's collapse also warns against proud attempts to decode mysteries God has not disclosed.

Four terrifying beasts rise from a chaotic sea, picturing violent empires that devour, exploit and conquer. Yet each beast receives its limited authority from someone greater. God, the Ancient of Days, judges every kingdom, while the Son of Man receives an everlasting kingdom. Daniel’s vision points to Jesus, whose rule comes through being crushed for sinners rather than crushing His enemies. His kingdom is already here, growing without earthly crowns or sceptres.

People often say a relationship, hobby, or job is their life, but behaviour shows what truly defines them. Hezekiah received healing and fifteen more years, yet when Babylonian visitors asked about the miracle, pride led him to display his riches instead of God's goodness. Grace should bear fruit. Because Christ saves those who come to Him in repentance and faith, His grace should move them to care about people who do not know Him. They can feed on Scripture, become involved in people's lives, and persevere in prayer.

Daniel knows the king’s decree makes prayer punishable by death, yet he returns to his open window and prays as usual. His steady habit becomes a public declaration that God’s judgement matters more than human approval or power. God shuts the lions’ mouths and vindicates him. God welcomes His people to depend on Him through regular, thankful prayer rather than guilt, for their Saviour has given them new and eternal life.

Belshazzar throws a feast while enemy armies surround Babylon, trusting the city's defences and mocking God with cups taken from His temple. A hand writes his judgement on the wall. Though Belshazzar knew how God had humbled Nebuchadnezzar, he refused to humble himself, and his kingdom fell that night. Everyone must answer to God. Yet the cross warns that sin will be judged and promises no condemnation for those who come to Christ in repentance and faith.

Babylon's powerful king believes its splendour rests on his strength. God warns Nebuchadnezzar through a dream and gives him twelve months to repent, but he boasts over the city and loses his sanity. His painful humbling lasts until he looks to heaven, when God restores his mind. He then acknowledges God's rule, and his royal authority returns. Jesus grounds that hope: He humbled Himself, bore God's punishment, rose to everlasting rule, and makes fellowship with God possible.
