SACRAMENTO Calif. PSN Sept. 23 2025 A burning railcar loaded with power poles sparked a hazardous situation early Monday when flames threatened tankers carrying explosive materials and spread to nearby property authorities said.The Sacramento Fire Department said crews were dispatched shortly after 2 a.m. to Roseville Road across from the Regional Transit light rail station where they found the open-style railcar fully engulfed. Tanker cars were attached to either end and flames were impinging on them raising concerns of a potential explosion.According to Fire Department spokesperson Justin Sylvia crews contained the blaze preventing the tankers from igniting. The fire spread to a nearby tow yard destroying about six vehicles and a trailer containing batteries. Grass in the area also caught fire and flames damaged Sacramento Municipal Utility District power lines triggering an outage in the neighborhood.The hazmat portion of the incident has been mitigated. It ended up burning some grass and getting into a tow yard Sylvia said. The fire also burned the SMUD lines causing a power outage in the area. No injuries and the cause is under investigation.Firefighters from allied agencies assisted in extinguishing the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
