Operation Mockingbird was the systematic infiltration of the United States media institutions by the CIA during the 1950’s to 70’s for the purposes of obtaining intelligence information, planting misinformation with foreign governments and officials, and for dissemination of American propaganda.

Through bribery or simply requesting favours, the CIA recruited numerous journalists, editors, or other staff of major media institutions (including The New York Times, TIME, and CBS) to become the eyes and ears for the CIA.
