Many of these German professionals were known members of the Nazi party. Notably, Wernher von Braun, a Nazi aerospace engineer and developer of the V-2 Rocket was a major figure acquired by Operation Paperclip. Wernher von Braun later became the director of the Marshall Space Flight Center and chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon.
