“Operation Paperclip” was a covert program executed by the US government in which 1,600 German scientists, engineers, and technicians were taken from Germany post-WW2 to be employed by the United States government.

Many of these German professionals were known members of the Nazi party. Notably, Wernher von Braun, a Nazi aerospace engineer and developer of the V-2 Rocket was a major figure acquired by Operation Paperclip. Wernher von Braun later became the director of the Marshall Space Flight Center and chief architect of the Saturn V super heavy-lift launch vehicle that propelled the Apollo spacecraft to the Moon.
