100 YEARS OF INTRUSION ON TRIBAL SOVEREIGNTY

In this episode I sit in on a discussion with Cornell Law Professor and former President of Seneca Nation Robert Odawi Porter. We discuss Tribal Sovereignty and Identity as it relates to the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act. Haudenosaunee People have by in large have rejected this notion of US Citizenship as we maintain a Nation to Nation relationship with the United States. We still honor the Two Row Wampum.

Meet the Curator: I sit down with Jamie Jacobs (Tonawanda Seneca, Turtle Clan) to speak about the Rochester Museum and Science Center's newest permanent exhibition Hodinöšyö:nih Continuity Innovation Resilience  this is Jamie's first opportunity to curate an exhibition showcasing contemporary Hodinöšyö:nih art it's an immersive exploration, artists build on traditional art forms represented in the RMSC and Rock Foundation collections to express their identities and address modern issues. The Exhibition opens December 6th at the RMSC.

Jonathan Thunder (b. 1977)

Thunder infuses his personal lens with real-time world experiences using a wide range of mediums. He is known for his surreal paintings, digitally animated films and installations in which he addresses subject matter of personal experience and social commentary. Jon is an enrolled member of the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe, and makes his home and studio in Duluth, MN.
He has attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, NM and studied Visual Effects and Motion Graphics in Minneapolis, MN at the Art Institute International. His work has been featured in many states, regional, and national exhibitions, as well as in local and international publications. Thunder is the recipient of a 2020-21 Pollock – Krasner Foundation Award for his risk taking in painting. Since his first solo exhibit in 2004, he has won several awards for his short films in national and international competitions. His work is in the permanent collections of Museums and Universities.

Kahente Horn-Miller is the Assistant Vice-President (Indigenous Initiatives) and an Associate Professor in the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies. She received her doctorate in 2009.

She's a mother to four and she is an active member of her community and a figurative bridge builder as she continues to research and write on issues that are relevant to her work and academic interests, such as Indigenous methodologies, Indigenous women, identity politics, colonization, Indigenous governance, and consensus-based decision making for her community and the wider society.

Her governance work and community-based research involves interpreting Haudenosaunee culture and bringing new life to old traditions. She continues to work with the research advisory for the Kahnawà:ke Diabetes Prevention Project, along with writing and publishing in her areas of interest.

It is the fruit of her endeavors as a Mohawk, an educator and a mother that she brings into her interactions with Kahnawà:ke:ronon (people of Kahnawà:ke) and the academic community.

Academics for her is not only about theorizing the issues that Indigenous peoples face as a way to find solutions; it is also about putting these theories into practice. It is through her teaching that she challenges her students to learn about her culture and about themselves as humans, which in the long term will foster relationships between Indigenous and non-native peoples that will go beyond the written word and the classroom and research settings.

“We have a lot of important knowledge to share,” she says.

Seneca Strong is focused on Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Recovery, utilizing the peer outreach, and recovery support model. Recovery supports include a drop in recreation center, access to support groups and local 12 step groups. Prevention and education are provided in the community.

Seneca Strong is compassionate to the social, psychological and inter-generational traumas of our community while supporting the empowerment of family and individuals. Seneca Strong utilizes customs and practices handed down by our ancestors. We offer holistic healing through Meditation, Nature Connections, Energy Healing, and Hypnotherapy.  They also have mens and womens talking circles, as well as a Red Road to Wellbriety group. They provide peer outreach and support to help guide our people to the proper support services for treatment and continue to assist through recovery.

The ultimate goal is to help each individual in reaching their maximum potential relating to themselves, family, friends, employment, and recovery from drugs and alcohol. They hope to help all those in need.
