Our Foundations Podcast

This is the beginning of season 4 as well as the beginning of an overview of the entire podcast thus far. It's a great place to start listening for newcomers and should be a valuable way to review years old content, make new connections, and connect some dots that got lost in the details. This episode introduces the structure of season 4, very briefly introduces the show for those who are new, and sets the stage for the first episode of the new season. Enjoy.

The early church fathers had a lot to say regarding the state. Here, I try to stick with the first generation church and what they said themselves about Statism. I also include accounts from historians on related aspects of the first Christians for a rounded view on their beliefs on the subject.

This episode wraps up the look at technocracy frameworks. The Kingdom of God perspective is unique in that is is independent of the other 3 and very in line with agorism, anarcho capitalism, voluntaryism, and the like. I use the Old Testament, the New Testament, and modern examples to show how the Kingdom of God approaches the concepts from the definition of technocracy, namely societal management by experts and resource management.

This is a break from our regularly scheduled program to insert an opportunity and request for listeners to help choose what the next season of the podcast will focus on. Will it be religious in nature, taking the statism out of Christianity and digging into the Sermon on the Mount with the cultural context of the Hebrews, the wisdom of the original church, and the practicality of living out the message in love and community or will the next season focus on a practical look at how to apply agorism to our lives in our present time with explorations into methods, strategies, and some case studies of operating outside of the system to increase liberty and autonomy. Your feedback is officially requested.

There is much to look into in relation to the Christian and the State but the focus here is on a relatively technocratic view of governing society through Christian values. Augustine's City of God is looked at for both the differentiation of the city of god and city of man and the role of the Christian within the latter. Calvin instituted a governance model in Geneva that was effective but not without issue. Lastly, the theology / philosophy of theonomy is explored for their take on how the kingdom of God is manifested through some melding with secular government.

The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov gives a very good picture of what soft technocracy looks like, and even how it compares with and pairs with more material and openly structured technocracy. As with the book covered in the previous episode, Brave New World, The Foundation has more recently been made into a TV series. These are not a replacement for the books and definitely skim over many of the main points that get brought out of the books. Enjoy.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is the perfect sequel to Plato's Republic, as it really brings Plato's ideas into a technological setting and gets more firmly into the concept of a more immaterial technocracy.

Plato's Republic is the proto model for technocracy. He takes us from the more material and hierarchical perspective to something more all encompassing. His view is more philosophic and focused on societies as a whole vs Machiavelli, Orwell, and Bentham who focused more on smaller groups of people under a specific ruler or party. I get into eugenics, rule by experts, the role of children, and much more.

It's time to bridge the gap between the first manifestation of technocracy and its evolution. The more material examples from the previous few episodes are expanded and taken to their logical evolutions to help show how this technocracy evolves in our time too. This is the bridge between two technocracies.

The technocracy assessment continues as I use the Panopticon writings of Jeremy Bentham to get a better understanding of how the early stage, material technocracy manifests. I use modern examples, mostly with Big Tech, as parallels to Bentham's Panopticon.
