On January 1 2020, 16-year-old Selena Not Afraid got into a van after spending the night at a New Years Eve house party. Supposedly, the van was supposed to drop her off at her grandma’s house. But, instead, the van broke down on the way and pulled into a rest area to do some quick engine repairs. And when the van was back up and running, Selena and another female passenger were left behind. And Selena was never seen alive again.

In this episode, we talk about the group of 5 people with Selena in that van on the day she went missing. All of whom were older than Selena, in their early 20’s, and not known to be her usual friends. Could there be reason to believe that this group of people know more than what they’re saying? Could they be pawns in a larger game? Or is the truth somewhere in the middle?

Mahsa Amini was a 22-year-old Kurdish (indigenous) woman. She was arrested by the Iranian morality police for the crime of showing just a little bit of her hair.  Later that day, she died in police custody. Authorities say Mahsa died of a heart attack but her family believes otherwise.
Mahsa's death has sparked an uprising in Iran. But the Iranian government has shut down the internet, and our mainstream media is not talking about this enough.
The voices of Iran need to be heard.
This revolution will not be televised, but we can make sure that it is talked about.

Law enforcement and the medical examiner said that Selena passed away due to accidental hypothermia. That has been the determination in several cases of indigenous women found dead under suspicious circumstances. 

But with the timeline of Selena’s story, is hypothermia even possible?

Hypothermia is a tricky diagnosis. According to medical journal ‘Forensic Science, Medicine, and Pathology’ a reliable hypothermia diagnosis requires “a clear understanding of the circumstances of the death.”

And, whatever the circumstances of Selena’s death, there are still so many unanswered questions. About the state of her body, the surprising discovery of her jewelry, and a condition detected in the autopsy that could throw the entire law enforcement narrative on its head.

On August 16 2009, Mitrice Richardson went missing after she was arrested by the LA County Sheriff’s Department. Mitrice was a recent college graduate with no previous arrests or history of mental illness. But at the time of her arrest Mitrice was in the midst of a mental health crisis. She was acting strangely at an upscale restaurant in Malibu and tried to walk out without paying the bill. Mitrice’s mom begged deputies not to release her daughter until she could be there to pick her up. But that is exactly what happened. Mitrice was released at midnight, alone, with no car, no phone, no wallet, and no way to find her way around in this unfamiliar area. And then, almost a year later, Mitrice was found dead. 

Selena lost three siblings in her short life. This episode is about their stories. Her twin sister Zoey died by suicide at age 11, her brother Preston was shot to death by the police, and her sister Tristen was killed in a hit and run.
