Out of Sight: Untold Stories of Indian Country

Political unrest has gripped the Northern Cheyenne Nation in southeastern Montana. Its causes run deep — decades of broken trust, financial mismanagement, and competing visions of sovereignty — and its consequences are unfolding in real time.

This multi-part series, Inside the Northern Cheyenne Reckoning, examines how a grassroots movement, a forensic audit, and the return of traditional leadership have upended tribal politics in Lame Deer. Through months of on-the-ground reporting, it follows the people demanding accountability, the leaders fighting to keep power, and the cultural revival emerging in the struggle’s wake.

This episode covers several mysterious deaths of Indigenous women and girls between 2017 and 2023. All of these cases share certain similar, and mysterious, conditions. And all of these cases have gone unsolved. Is this string of seemingly mysterious deaths an example of mass investigative negligence? Or could there be a serial killer with a specific MO?

On January 1 2020, 16-year-old Selena Not Afraid got into a van after spending the night at a New Years Eve house party. Supposedly, the van was supposed to drop her off at her grandma’s house. But, instead, the van broke down on the way and pulled into a rest area to do some quick engine repairs. And when the van was back up and running, Selena and another female passenger were left behind. And Selena was never seen alive again.

In this episode, we talk about the group of 5 people with Selena in that van on the day she went missing. All of whom were older than Selena, in their early 20’s, and not known to be her usual friends. Could there be reason to believe that this group of people know more than what they’re saying? Could they be pawns in a larger game? Or is the truth somewhere in the middle?

In this episode we talk about a federal task force called Operation Lady Justice. The task force was created via the order of then-president Trump in 2016. And, for a while, this task force seemed to be working on Selena's case. What happened next is a perfect example of systemic failure.
