  • The Fast Lane, Unpacked - Deep Dive
A two-host deep dive on the AMPA receptor - fast synaptic transmission, LTP and learning, and how fast-acting antidepressants run through this one gate. Largely animal-model based. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-162-ampa-receptors-rapid-plasticity

  • The Fast Lane: AMPA Receptors and Rapid Plasticity (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - the tiny gate behind thought and memory. The AMPA receptor carries almost all of the brain's fast excitatory signaling, and the brain constantly moves these gates in and out of synapses: add more and the connection strengthens (long-term potentiation), a core molecular basis of learning and memory (Malinow Malenka 2002). The same gate is the final common path for fast-acting antidepressants - ketamine's rapid effect requires working AMPA receptors and is abolished when they're blocked (Maeng et al. 2008; Autry et al. 2011), and even the metabolite (2R,6R)-HNK works through AMPA while barely touching the NMDA receptor (Zanos et al. 2016). Much of this is animal-model based. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-162-ampa-receptors-rapid-plasticity

  • The Little Brain, Unpacked - Deep Dive
A two-host deep dive on the cerebellum - the brain's forgotten half, dysmetria of thought, embodiment, and the psychedelic body. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-161-cerebellum-psychedelic-body

  • The Little Brain: The Cerebellum and the Psychedelic Body (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - the overlooked half of the brain. Tucked beneath the folded hemispheres sits the cerebellum, the 'little brain,' holding roughly 69 billion neurons - about 80% of the brain's total - in only about a tenth of its volume (Herculano-Houzel 2009). For a century it was treated as a pure movement machine, until patients with cerebellar damage revealed disruptions of thinking, planning, language and emotion - the cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (Schmahmann Sherman 1998). Under LSD, sensory-somatomotor networks including the cerebellum grow more connected as the intellect quiets, an effect blocked at the 5-HT2A receptor (Preller et al. 2018). • The Switch That Keeps You Awake, Unpacked - Deep Dive
A two-host deep dive on the orexin/hypocretin system - the brain's wakefulness switch, narcolepsy, hunger and reward, and orexin-blocking sleep drugs. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-160-orexin-hypocretin-wakefulness

  • The Switch That Keeps You Awake: The Orexin System (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - the small cluster of cells that holds your waking mind in place. Orexin (also called hypocretin) is made by only a few thousand neurons in the lateral hypothalamus, yet it stabilizes wakefulness across the whole brain. Discovered independently by two teams in 1998 (de Lecea et al.; Sakurai et al.), it cracked open the mystery of narcolepsy: in narcolepsy with cataplexy roughly 90% of orexin neurons are lost, so sleep leaks into waking (Thannickal et al. 2000). Orexin also ties alertness to hunger and reward, and blocking it is how dual orexin receptor antagonists like suvorexant treat insomnia. Education, not medical advice. • The Other Half of the Brain, Unpacked - Deep Dive
A two-host deep dive on astrocytes and the tripartite synapse - the brain's forgotten half, gliotransmission, calcium waves, and memory. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-159-astrocytes-tripartite-synapse

  • The Other Half of the Brain: Astrocytes and the Tripartite Synapse (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - the brain's long-overlooked other half. Roughly half of the cells in the brain are glia, and the most abundant are star-shaped astrocytes, once dismissed as mere 'glue.' They wrap around synapses, hear the chemical messages passing through, and release their own signals back - the tripartite synapse (Araque et al. 1999). Astrocytes supply the D-serine that neurons need to strengthen connections and form memories (Henneberger et al. 2010), and human astrocytes are far larger and more complex than those of other animals, one wrapping around up to ~2 million synapses (Oberheim et al. 2009). Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-159-astrocytes-tripartite-synapse
