  • The Blue Spot: The Locus Coeruleus and Noradrenaline (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - the tiny nucleus that sets the brightness of your whole world. Deep in the brainstem sits a speck of blue no bigger than a grain of rice: the locus coeruleus, the brain's only source of noradrenaline. From a few thousand neurons it projects almost everywhere, acting as the master dial of arousal, attention, and the balance between focus and exploration (Aston-Jones Cohen 2005). A surprising or important event triggers an LC burst that floods the cortex, resets the networks, and stamps the moment into memory (Sara 2009). Classic psychedelics quiet its background firing while amplifying its response to the outside world through 5-HT2 receptors (Rasmussen Aghajanian 1986). Mostly animal data; one contributor among many. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-155-locus-coeruleus-noradrenaline

  • The Waking Dream, Unpacked - Deep Dive
A two-host deep dive on psychedelics and sleep - REM, slow-wave sleep, serotonin's control of dreaming, and the antidepressant-like sleep signature. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-154-psychedelics-sleep-rem

  • The Waking Dream: Psychedelics, Sleep and REM (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - where tripping and dreaming meet in the imagining brain. The psychedelic state and REM dreaming share a neural profile: quiet prefrontal control, heightened limbic and visual activity. Serotonin normally promotes waking and suppresses REM (Monti 2011), so a serotonergic psychedelic produces a dreamlike waking state and then reshapes the night. Daytime ayahuasca reduced REM and increased deep slow-wave sleep without harming sleep quality (Barbanoj et al. 2008), and daytime psilocybin delayed REM onset - the fingerprint of a classical antidepressant (Dudysova et al. 2020). Small, early studies; psychedelics are not sleep aids. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-154-psychedelics-sleep-rem

  • The Other Door: Salvia divinorum and the Kappa Opioid Receptor (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - the strangest psychedelic of all. Almost every classic psychedelic works through the serotonin 2A receptor; Salvia divinorum is the great exception. Its molecule salvinorin A is a potent, selective agonist of the kappa opioid receptor (Roth et al. 2002), a completely different doorway to altered consciousness. It is also non-nitrogenous and, by weight, one of the most potent natural psychoactives known. In humans, the opioid blocker naltrexone abolished its effects while the serotonin blocker ketanserin did not (Maqueda et al. 2016). Intensely dissociative and often dysphoric. Powerful and destabilizing, not recreational. Education, not medical advice. Read the article: https://ootwjournal.com/article-153-salvia-kappa-opioid-receptor

  • The Chemistry of Connection: MDMA, Oxytocin and the Social Brain (Narrated)
The full deep dive, narrated - MDMA's gift of closeness, traced to one ancient molecule. MDMA triggers a robust release of oxytocin, and in humans the rise in oxytocin tracks prosocial feeling more closely than blood MDMA itself (Dumont et al. 2009). In animals, an oxytocin antagonist blunts MDMA's sociability, and the release runs through 5-HT1A receptors on hypothalamic oxytocin neurons (Thompson et al. 2007). A single dose reopened a critical period for social reward learning in mice, in an oxytocin-dependent way (Nardou et al. 2019). Much causal work is in animals. Education, not medical advice.
