At 3:42 a.m. on February 17, 1970, dispatchers at Fort Bragg received an emergency phone call from Jeffrey MacDonald, who faintly spoke into the receiver: "Help! Five forty-four Castle Drive! Stabbing! Five forty-four Castle Drive! Stabbing! Hurry!" When authorities arrived they found Macdonald's pregnant wife and 2 young daughters stabbed to death and Jeffrey mildly wounded. Jeffrey says it was 4 acid heads that did it, the military police say otherwise. What would follow is a 40 plus year saga for Jeffrey to try and prove his innocence.

On March 14th, 1912, Floyd Allen was accused of triggering a shootout at a courthouse where he was on trial for a separate crime. The shootout, which involved law enforcement and many members of the Allen clan killed the presiding judge, the prosecutor, the sheriff, and two others. There was confusion on who fired the first shots and who killed who, but in the end Floyd and his son were found guilty and sentenced to death and a few other family members received lengthy prison sentences. To this day people in the county say that Floyd was wrongly convicted.

In the first one, we have the abduction of one month old Peter Weinberger when he disappeared after his mother left him alone for 10 minutes on the front porch in his carriage on July 4th, 1956. In the second, and most disturbing one, 12 year old Marion Parker was taken by a man from her school on December 15th, 1927 and murdered and dismembered two days later. Both incidents involved ransom demands from the kidnappers.

On October 1st, 1910, brothers John and James McNamara used dynamite to blow up the Los Angeles Times building in response to the newspaper's anti-union stance. The explosion and resulting fire killed 21 and injured another 100. It was just one of the many crimes during this era dubbed "the crime of the century."
