  • Laundroid: Folding Away a Chore

    Folding laundry is a lot of fun--not.  And that's where the Laundroid, created by Tokyo-based Seven Dreamers Laboratories, Inc.,  comes in.

    Laundroid is the world's first laundry-folding robot.

    Seven Dreamers president and CEO Dr. Shin Sakane was onsite at CES® 2018, to demonstrate how it worked.

    And Shin says, not only is the Laundroid premiering in Tokyo and San Francisco--it's on its way to becoming an affordable reality for the average person.  (Think "available on an everyday basis around 2019"!)

    Shin talked about the story behind the robot, what was involved in creating it and what we can expect in the future.

    Seeing the Laundroid ready for manufacture and marketing was an especially exciting part of CES® 2018.

    Two years earlier, at CES® 2016, we had met Seven Dreamers spokesperson Guy Hayazaki.  Introducing us to the Laundroid, Guy had projected that it would be on the market within the next few years.

    Fast-forward to 2018--with the Laundroid is scheduled to make its U.S. debut in San Francisco on January 25th of this year!
    On this edition of Over Coffee®, you'll hear:

    *
    How Shin first came up with the concept for his laundry-folding robot;

    *
    What was involved, in making his vision a reality;

    *
    One of the most challenging hurdles, in translating the task of folding clothes into AI;

    *
    How the Laundroid works, to sort and fold clothes;

    *
    Shin's "wow" moment in the creation process;

    *
    Where you can see the Laundroid in action;

    *
    When you can expect to see it available for purchase;

    *
    How to contact Seven Dreamers Laboratories for information on their "pilot program", in the U.S.

    *
    Where you can see the Laundroid in the U.S. (it's just about to premiere)!

    And, follow the Laundroid on their Facebook page!

  • Ozobot®: Upgrading “Very Cool”

    How can you possibly improve on something that's seriously cool--and cute?

    Ozobot® makes it look very easy.  Introduced in 2014 as the world's smallest programmable robot, it was designed to teach kids how to code.

    At CES® 2018, in Las Vegas on Tuesday Ozobot® Marketing Project Manager and Producer Morgan Andersen explained what's new with this one-inch-tall innovation--and what's coming next!

    Ozobot®, which first appeared at CES® 2014, is a multiple award-winner.  Among its honors are the 2015 CES® Editors' Choice Award, and the 2015 Kids At Play Interactive (KAPi) award.

    And for CES® 2018, it was back, with a game that proved highly addictive!

    Also, as with any fun innovation, this is simply the latest chapter.  Morgan says we can expect a lot more from Ozobot® in the future!

    Would you like to be a part of the Ozoblockly community which Morgan mentioned from the show floor of CES® 2018?  Here's the link for more information.  (They have classroom lesson plans and a Facebook connection to share your projects!)

  • Putting VR at Your Feet

    What if virtual reality--games or other applications--could be hands-free?

    That's the premise which led 3DRudder Founder and CEO Stanislas Chesnais to create a different way to power VR .

    Stan, as he likes to be called, designed a foot-powered "joystick" for virtual reality!   And since its creation, his 3DRudder VR Motion Controller has received multiple honors, including four CES® awards!

    At CES® 2018, attendees had the opportunity to experience it, onsite.  But while they were having a great time with a game application, Stan, as he prefers to be called, explained that 3DRudder can do much more.

    Stan talked about the experience of creating his VR foot-controlled joystick, some of its applications and what's next, from the floor of CES® 2018's Gaming and Virtual Reality Marketplace.
    CES® 2018 continues from now through Friday , January 12.  Look for 3DRudder on Floor 1 of Las Vegas Convention Center's South Hall!

  • An Innovator’s CES® Win

    "With our technology, Snow White would have never eaten that apple," says Senorics Chief Sales Officer Robert Langer.

    And on Monday evening, Robert, and his early-stage startup Senorics, won first place in the "Pitchfest" awards, as CES® 2018's Euro Tech Week kicked off in Las Vegas!

    Robert, who is from Dresden, Germany, had the opportunity to pitch Senorics as part of a pilot project, ENRICH in the USA, funded by the European Commission.

    Congratulations to Robert, the first early-stage European startup to win a first-place award in ENRICH in the USA's new initiative!  Here's a quick look at his cool new technology and how he envisions it working as part of everyday life within the next couple of years!

    Meanwhile,the ENRICH in the USA program is geared towards building centers and hubs to promote European innovation in the U.S., according to European American Enterprise Council Vice-President of Univerxity & Entrepreneurship Soft Landing Programs Blandine Chantepie-Kari.

    Blandine says ENRICH in the USA is comprised of nine organizations: six in Europe and three in the United States.

    "What the European Commission planned was...to have a European network of research and innovation centers (with companies already established and growing, who want to expand their business within the United States)," says ENRICH USA partner Raimund Brochler.   "So this is a kind of pilot activity, and it would then be expanded to other companies with promising markets."

    Congratulations to Robert, and to Senorics, the first early-stage European startup to win a first-place award in ENRiCH in the USA's pilot program!  We look forward to seeing Senorics here in our part of the world in the future.
    CES® 2018's Euro Tech Week continues from now through Friday, January 12th at Harrah's and Eureka Park, Las Vegas.   Here's their link, for more information, and a link to their Facebook page.

    So do a lot of his fellow musicians, as they play his creation: the world's first concert-quality 3D printed electric violin!

    We met and talked with Laurent during CES® 2017.    At the time, he was exhibiting--and allowing musicians to play--his 3DVarius at CES' Eureka Park area.  And he had just made his first U.S. sale of the 3DVarius.  (His company is based in France.)

    With the arrival of 2018, Laurent is again preparing to bring 3DVarius to the U.S.  He 's headed back to the NAMM Show in Anaheim in late January, with both his 4- and 5-string 3DVarius violins, AND two new models, according to his Facebook page.

    As we explored Eureka Park® and CES® 2017, Laurent took the time to talk with us and share the story of creating the 3DVarius.
    In this edition of Over Coffee® you’ll hear:

    *
    How Laurent came to choose 3D printing for his new violin;

    *
    Some of the challenges involved in creating it;
