The damage inflicted on our lives by trauma is serious and long lasting.It’s not a simple “emotional experience”. Trauma causes damage to our physical bodies, too. Our nervous systems are damaged by it, and even immune function and cognitive function can be affected.
The best way to deal with the depression and anxiety that often shows up on the other side of trauma is to prevent and minimize as much as you can. That’s not to say that you will avoid these feelings entirely, but you can give yourself a positive footing as you move through the natural processes of trauma recovery.
