  • Own It! 179 | Mental Models

Do you have a Mental Model which helps you with better decision-making and clearer thinking leading to appropriate action? Today, Nicola Cairncross and Judith Morgan introduce a choice of Mental Models, one of which will be right for you, your business and your life.

    In the Show

The beach has been bulldozed in Stoupa which means it is officially Summer. Nicola’s been offered superfast broadband and her 30 Day Challenge has converted well to paying clients. Judith’s found a helpful holistic, Helen, who has contributed (along with kefir and vitamin C) to her feeling like a new woman. She was also hot for the first time in April. There’s talk of intrepid folks Hal and Linda, and Lisa and Glenn, and more on the Women’s Equality Party.

    What’s Fuelled Their Fire?

Both Nicola and Judith have been delighted by their respective clients having great experiences, doing good work, paying promptly and generously, and providing top reviews on Facebook and Amazon. There is nothing like the feeling of being a good match for your client (and vice versa) and both parties being amply rewarded in every sense.

    Focus of the Week

Nicola gives the listeners and Judith a rundown of various mental models including the Law of Attraction (which takes J by surprise that Nicola would include it), and those offered by such luminaries as Gary Vee, James Schramko, Eli Goldratt and Stephen Covey.

Judith and Nicola discuss the 80/20 rule (the Pareto Principle), the Kaizen theory of continuous improvement, focusing on finding, repairing and improving the weakest link (Theory of Constraints), being able to distinguish between urgent and important, deathbed decisions and more.

They realise the important thing is not just to discover and study these mental models but pick one as your own and use it as often as necessary. Nicola shares a video on YouTube that demonstrates one of her favourites, the Post-it Note exercise at 1:09 of the video https://youtu.be/SmOMX511rTs

    Words of the Week

Judith picks Wisdom and Nicola picks Smart.

    Project Updates

Nicola’s got a new website for the Clicks & Leads Academy thanks to her sister, Sarah and she’s back using Facebook Ads. She updates Judith on the much bigger download numbers the podcast is achieving now that the show is being distributed via Radio Public. Judith is happy to share with Nicola that she’s achieved her first book sale via Amazon’s Expanded Distribution, she explains what this is and what it could mean for her book, Your Biz Your Way.

    Who or What’s Impressed?

Nicola’s impressed by Matt Duggan and Russell Brand, and Judith by Amazon Prime’s Harry Bosch 4.

  • Own It! 178 | Mary Daniels: Normal People, Noble Causes

Writer, coach, consultant and Wild Woman, Mary Daniels, is our guest this week. She talks
about the congruence between people/organisations with the vision to do good and create
change in the world and their values and behaviour.

    In the Show…

Judith’s car has sailed through the MoT but she discovered some bad small business news down at the garage while she was there. She reflects on Twitter in the week of her 10th Twitterversary.

Nicola’s enjoyed another sociable week of dining out, Reading Club, Mothers’ Day pampering, ouzo and octopus and a birthday party. She has her eye on a chap who is both taciturn and saturnine and has his own boat AND his own taverna!

    What’s Fuelled Their Fire?

Judith’s fire was fuelled by last Friday’s recording session with upcoming podcast guests 9-12 - Rhys, Richard, Alice and Paula. Nicola’s spoken to Justin Brooke about her Facebook Ads account suspension and he’s helped her to rationalise it unemotionally and to find the workaround.

Focus of the Week: Mary Daniels – Normal People, Noble Causes

Mary's talk is about the dangers of not knowing who you are and the congruence between people/organisations with the vision to do good and create change in the world with their values and behaviour.

Noble causes are served by perfectly normal human beings who behave in exceptional ways and this isn't limited to organisations either, it can apply to us working at home alone. Ask yourself about your daily habits:

    • Am I being true to who I am?
    • Would anyone looking in from the outside know that?
    • What compromises do I make, how do I let my values slip, how often do I evaluate that so I
can bring myself back on track?

Mary’s first book is published by Hay House and called Wild Awakening, and she’s working
on her next. Find out more at MaryDaniels.co.uk

    Words of the Week

Nicola picks Leisure and Judith goes for Dreams.

    Project Updates

Own It! The Podcast’s download numbers continue to impress both Nicola and Judith and their best guess is that it is a second spike attributable to Radio Public who reward podcasters who send them traffic.

Nicola’s writing a sales letter, and her 30 Day Challenge people continue to get excellent results and ROI. One of them was also featured by Radio Public in their Indies to Watch spotlight.

Judith continues to make good progress with her Creating the Impossible Challenge, her Blogfest. Now all 52 blog posts are published and all 52 podcasts too.

    Who or What’s Impressed?

Nicola is impressed (again) by Iain Banks, having re-read The Wasp Factory in her Reading Club. Both Judith and Nicola had read it before but since it was published in 1984, neither of them can remember it!

Judith is impressed by three women – Sarah Sellers who finished second in the Boston Marathon,
Tammie Jo Shults the pilot who landed the South West Airlines plane which lost an engine mid-flight and Doreen Lawrence who never gave up hope of achieving justice for her son, Stephen.

  • Own It! 177 | The Value You Bring to the Hour

Nicola and Judith debate this from Jim Rohn: “You don’t get paid for the hour, you get paid for the value you bring to the hour.”

    In the Show…

Nicola’s enjoyed a busy social week with Greek Easter a week later than in the UK and then a second Christmas! The local turkey is conspicuous by his absence though. Judith’s caught up with the calls she missed during last week’s power cut. She talks about her learning from working with her low-carb clients, and working out what she does want in a home next time she puts down roots.

    What’s Fuelled Their Fire?

Nicola’s 30 Day Challenge is going swimmingly, she’s loving it, the clients are getting great results and giving her wonderful feedback and testimonials which she’s finding very affirming. She’s reminded of the power of a simple system.

Judith’s done two Entrepreneur of the Day calls this week including one referral from Nicola, Jimmy the pastor from Seattle, Washington. Both will become clients of one sort of another in due course and meanwhile they’ve left glowing 5-star reviews on her Facebook Page.

    FOCUS of the Week

If you don’t get paid for the hour but what you bring to it, how do you demonstrate the value of your time/talent, and how do you price and package your expertise so that it doesn’t come down to being devalued by an hourly rate? Nicola and Judith debate what they will and won’t pay for by the hour and at what price and then open up the debate to the wider issues, concluding that we are all weirdos when it comes to money.

    Words of the Week

Nicola picks Live and Judith goes for Reviews.

    Project Updates

Judith’s up to 124 books sold, all 52 blogfest posts are now published and she’s working her way through the newsletter spotlight features and the podcast readings and enjoying both a lot more this week. Nicola’s still working on getting her Facebook Ads account reinstated whilst at the same time feeling liberated from over-dependence on just the one social platform.

    Who or What’s Impressed?

Nicola is impressed by both Minesh Bhindi and James Schramko and their respective passionate truthful use of Facebook Lives, giving rise to her choice of word of the week. And Judith rants about the gender pay gap and; like Sarah Montague, she is “incandescent with rage”. She introduces Nicola to the Women’s Equality Party via Sandi Toksvig’s article in The Guardian about the Adam Smith lecture she’d just given which takes the discussion still further into women’s unpaid labour.

  • Own It! 176 | What Price Education?

What price a university education in 2018 in an era when information is free?

    In the Show…

Judith moved house on Good Friday through biblical rain and initially it didn’t go well. Nicola also had trials over the Easter weekend - with her Facebook Ads account.

    What’s Fuelled Their Fire?

Once Judith got back to work after the move and a day lost to a power cut, her fire was fuelled by a great consultation with a PWYW client which went really well and cheered her up to be able to be helpful again. She was also generously rewarded by the ideal client for her time and expertise.

Nicola’s found an alternative to her Affiliate Marketing Training product to which she likes to refer her clients at JV Zoo and it sorts out her problem in that they pay commissions immediately.

    FOCUS of the Week

What price a university education in 2018? The conversation is prompted by a post on Facebook by Erica Blair. It is a viewpoint both Nicola Cairncross and Judith Morgan share with Erica, also with the likes of Gary Vee and James Altucher. Now that information is free, why would you go into debt to acquire a tertiary education? Nicola and Judith are both lifelong learners and have also both paid for that learning. This conversation segues into what Nicola has learned this week about how to resolve her own FB Ads problem.

    Words of the Week

Given their experiences this week, Nicola picks Patience and Judith goes for Adaptable.

    Project Updates

Judith’s finished posting up all her 52 guest blogfest stories but still has the audio and the newsletters to do. She’s behind with the 90-day Creating the Impossible because her challenge proved a little bit more impossible than even she had anticipated! She’s had a gratifying flurry of book sales at Amazon over the bank holiday weekend with 10 print copies alone in 48 hours, plus some Kindle sales.

Nicola reports that Sarah has redirected our podcast home page to Radio Public and other changes arising, including whether and how to strip out the ads from previous popular shows to meet Radio Public’s monetisation rules.

    Who or What’s Impressed?

Nicola is impressed by a book called Get Account Back by Dan Henry, the $47 solution to her Facebook problem, and also by the Albanian cleaning ladies she sees spring cleaning the holiday properties near where she lives, in anticipation of the season. Judith’s been to visit a poorly friend and impressed by her recovery and other manifestations in her life which appear to be nothing short of miraculous.

Nicola Cairncross is running a 30 Day Challenge and asks why do they work and why are they so popular? Judith Morgan doesn't have the answer - she loathes them (mostly).

  • Own It! 173 | Being Unbusy

The topic of today's show is Being Unbusy, going from Ambition to Meaning as Wayne Dyer called it.  It happens at a different time in everyone's life, a switching of gears from something which appeared to matter to something which now looks more inviting and valuable. In Own It! terms it's the "And Your Life" bit.

  • Own It! 172 | Law of Attraction (Part 1)

Nicola Cairncross brings the Law of Attraction to today's call and it turns out to be so rich a topic that this show had to be called Part 1, which surprised both Nicola and Judith Morgan. Nicola wasn't a fan of The Secret initially but spends a lot of time catching her thoughts and working on mindset for herself and with her clients. N&J both like Joe Vitale's book Zero Limits and now, thanks to Michael Neill's book Creating the Impossible, Nicola has started daily meditation too which is helping.

  • Own It! 170 | Facebook Group Changes

Facebook has written to both Judith Morgan and Nicola Cairncross (and everyone) to ask us all to review the setting of the groups we belong to. What does this mean and why have they done it? What implications does this sort of thing have when it comes to reliance on Facebook and other third-party platforms. And why are we up in arms when invited to pay for something we so value?
