  • Own It! 218 – What’s Blocking Your Abundance?

Judith and Nicola talk about the emotions they have allowed to block their own abundance historically and the whole raft of reasons why they believe clients do the same. Nicola starts off the debate with money being a game, brainwashing in schools, and how some are not prepared to forego time and fun for later reward.

    In The Show

Nicola’s in full preparation mode for what is fast becoming her annual trip to Australia. She’s staying in Sydney with brother Alex but she’s discovered she’s speaking in Brisbane where she’ll be staying in an Airbnb for a few days. Fortunately, the flights in between are very affordable.

Judith has some astrological news today, Uranus arriving on 6th March in her own star sign of Taurus, a once in lifetime happening as the last time this took place was 84 years ago. Plus, yesterday, 5th March, Mercury Retrograde began. Judith explained astrologer Sally Kirkman’s view about what’s best to do during MR and how to handle it. By the time the show gets aired, we will be half way through MR!

Sally has her own podcast, once a month (obvs, 12 signs of the zodiac!) with her friend Christina, the Oxford Astrologer. More about their podcast at Sally’s website SallyKirkman.com

    What's Fuelled Their Fire?

Nicola was inspired to enter a few writing competitions with her sci-fi vampire story and spent Sunday writing. She was then inspired by watching American Gods to think about becoming a screenwriter and immediately started to download huge amounts of content and stories, and do research on screenwriting and scripts.

Judith suggests Nicola was channeling and explains how something similar happened to her this week too which in turn inspired this week’s Focus.

    Focus Of The Week

Judith and Nicola talk about the emotions they have allowed to block their own abundance historically and the whole raft of reasons why they believe clients do the same. Nicola starts off the debate with money being a game, brainwashing in schools, and how some are not prepared to forego time and fun for later reward. Judith’s reasons include low vibrations caused by many and various things and people, clutter, and lack of scarcity in the household, plus what will people think and who do we dare not overtake etc. Listeners are invited to share their own thoughts on this topic, as ever, in our Facebook Group.

    Words Of The Week

Nicola chooses Ideas and Judith picks Prosperity.

    Project Updates

Judith updates Nicola with the two widely differing valuations she’s received for her flat in Worthing and explains her lender’s Right to Consolidate which means she might have to consider selling all four flats in order to take the profit from any one.

    Who Or What's Impressed

Nicola is impressed by her new find in Neil Gaiman, and Judith tells Nicola about Allison, the podcast’s latest Patreon, and describes the trigger to her deciding to become one. She now takes the podcast up to 6 Patreons and a total of $23 per month.

  • Own It! 217 – How Can I Feel Less Busy/Stressed?

Nicola describes how busy and stressed she’s been feeling over the recent month or so. Given that she doesn’t work full time she wonders why she never has time to do her creative writing which she schedules for the afternoons but mostly ends up cancelling. What’s the answer to feeling too busy and/or too stressed?

    In The Show

Nicola’s been flat out catching up. She’s recorded 14 one-minute videos, two vzines and six Write Club podcasts. She’s worked closely with her new VA, bringing her up to speed, supported Phoebe through a second job interview, borne some banking admin stress and been out three nights on the trot. Busy, busy, busy.

Judith was up all night for the Oscars, and she’s grateful for a second PPI win. She appeals to the listener as her current housesitting gig is nearly up and Nicola has a genius idea about the Stoupa Life group as lots of people are about to come out for the summer leaving their UK homes empty for long periods of time.

    What's Fuelled Their Fire?

Nicola is excited about Google Optimise which is free and enables you to test things on your own website with ease.

Judith has two new clients in her diary today, one of whom followed the ideal fast route to becoming a client, finding Judith via Google, buying her book, reading it (!) and booking herself into Judith’s online diary, all within one week.

Judith has taken on the challenge of increasing the Own It! Patrons from five people paying $19 between them to sufficient in number to create $100 per month which would cover the podcast’s costs. If you’d like to be one of those who contribute a few dollars a month, there’s a link to Patreon on our podcast website or you can go straight to Patreon.com/NicolaCairnX.

    Focus Of The Week

Nicola describes how busy and stressed she’s been feeling over the recent month or so. Given that she doesn’t work full time she wonders why she never has time to do her creative writing which she schedules for the afternoons but mostly ends up cancelling. What’s the answer to feeling too busy and/or too stressed? Judith and Nicola discuss creating a buffer, getting ahead, better planning, addressing the feelings themselves, running to catch up, deadlines, and stress and time management.

    Words Of The Week

Nicola chooses Current and Judith picks Leadership.

    Project Updates

Nicola’s sold her third business book in as many weeks, this time on a PWYW basis and is delighted the purchaser chose to pay $10. She reports podcast downloads at 96,777 and predicts 100k in the next seven weeks.

Judith sidestepped her writing on the day after the Oscars, and updates Nicola with progress on selling her BTL flat in Worthing – zero progress in the first nine days.

    Who Or What's Impressed

Nicola has enjoyed reading all night, After You’d Gone by Maggie O’Farrell and Judith is impressed by a quote from screenwriter William Goldman which she picked up from Samuel L. Jackson at the Oscars.

Nicola’s had a difficult few days culminating in her kettle triggering a loss of electricity this morning just as she was making coffee, wanting to take a shower and get online for the podcast recording. Fortunately, an electrician “magically” appears and sorts it all out for fifty euro and just in time. She will need a new kettle too. Judith’s week has been about new client attraction, the supermoon, sleep and sleeplessness. Abraham Hicks and making a new Facebook friend who owns and runs a coach business, as distinct from a coaching business.

She’s made her heroine younger so that some romance can be introduced. Judith has written twice this week on Monday and she introduces a new project, selling one of her buy-to-let properties.

      Who Or What's Impressed

Nicola picks out Annabel and Irini as her stars in week one of this year’s Masterchef. And Judith is excited by a model and a platform for monetising her newsletter.  She raves about Substack.com.

    In The Show

Nicola’s new VA is settling in brilliantly, plus she tells Judith a couple of local Stoupa stories about getting some wood delivered and how her Seat car has been recalled to Kalamata and about her cleaner’s husband who is driving it there and back for her. Judith brings Nicola up to speed with this year’s crop of films, her faves and her dislikes and why, in anticipation of BAFTA on 10th February and Oscar on 24th.

    What's Fuelled Their Fire?

Nicola is still very interested in The Story Grid and recommends two YouTube videos:
    1. What It Takes to Turn Pro
    2. How to Tell a Story that Resonates

Judith has met some listeners she didn’t know before in the Own It! Facebook Page and Group and Karen inspires her to think about future topics for the podcast which might go under the title of Side Hustles. Karen is interested in ways of making more money, and in investments.

  • Own It! 213 | What to Do When the Product Is You

Why does it seem sensible to make a business from scratch out of something you are not passionate about, when the thing you long to do seems unrealistic?

    In The Show

Nicola describes her week as frantic because it is Sarah’s last few days so she’s been working with the new VA who is based in the Philippines. Her local project manager is helping with a proper induction, and the team is immersed in SOPs (standard operating procedures), training videos and tick lists. Judith’s had what she says is a classic up-and-down self-employed week, some good, some bad, feeling a bit under the weather, best friends over to lunch and a small PPI win with more in the pipeline.

    What's Fuelled Their Fire?

Nicola’s made the first sale of her new book at NicolasBook.com – Attract 3.0 and Judith’s been coaching a man who is selling his business and going to live with his family in Spain. What will he do next? This discussion provokes content for this week’s Focus.

    Focus Of The Week

Why does it seem sensible to make a business from scratch out of something you are not passionate about, when the thing you long to do seems unrealistic? Is it because the product is you? Judith thinks so and she and Nicola debate how to find the confidence to pursue your passion project, how to make the time for it and how to believe in it before you see success and outside validation.

    Words Of The Week

Nicola chooses Tight and Judith picks Month-End.

    Project Updates

Two of Nicola’s Write Club the Podcast colleagues have offered to write articles for her own new passion project and membership site, Writing Club World.

    Who Or What's Impressed

Judith was impressed by a sponsored post on Facebook which appeared to follow the Frank Kern principles Nicola has mentioned a couple of times on recent podcasts. And Nicola has discovered a new crime writer she likes called Joseph Knox and his detective Aidan Waits and recommends the dark writing in the first of the series, Sirens.

  • Own It! 212 | How to Hire a Coach

What criteria do you use to hire a coach? How do you think your clients hire you? How do you wish your clients would hire you? Nicola Cairncross and Judith Morgan discuss all this and more!

    In The Show

Nicola’s return journey to Stoupa was far less stressful than her outward one, although it did end with a rather “interesting” taxi ride. She’s pleased to be back in her peaceful, clean and tidy home. She’s had a breakthrough in her new VA plan and is hiring a project manager for a month to handle it for her.

Judith tells Nicola about last week’s Cashflow game and what she learned from the day’s events, including very easy travel thanks to Waze and how to kill a couple of early morning hours in Chiswick!

    What's Fuelled Their Fire?

Following on from last week’s show about pro blogging, Judith updates Nicola with her discoveries and plan to niche blog on matters esoteric. Nicola’s been to a Write Club meeting and taught the members about the Story Grid, and she also talks about her own new book Attract 3.0. She’s had a second breakthrough this week, in her creative sci-fi writing after completing Module 1 of her Curtis Brown writing course.

    Focus Of The Week
    1. What criteria do Nicola and Judith use when they hire a coach?
    2. How do they think their clients hire them?
    3. How do they wish their clients would hire them?
    Words Of The Week

Nicola chooses Questions and Judith picks Solo.

    Project Updates

Nicola’s really pleased with the big upswing in her traffic results as an excellent outcome of her daily videos. And Judith has committed to and completed her second writing Monday, one cheat post and one about her three favourite astrologers. She explains her logic for that and is testing, testing, testing.

    Who Or What's Impressed

Judith was impressed by this week’s hard-working Russian cleaning lady who swept the entire house with a stiff brush when the hoover didn’t work, and Nicola explains the spooky coincidences which led to her discovering a sci-fi literary festival called Cymera in Edinburgh and she interviews the founder Ann Landmann who crowdfunded it to get it launched.

  • Own It! 211 | Successful Pro Blogging

Both Nicola’s sister Sarah Cairncross and Judith are interested in creating a living from successful pro blogging. Nicola shares some interesting stories, articles, interviews, facts and figures and Judith tries to work out whether it is something she could do or pay to have done for her.

    In The Show

Nicola is delighted with her new phone, and she’s celebrated by buying a coat because there is snow in Greece! She’s been out to lunch with Pete in Brighton and enjoyed a meeting of minds at the Hotel du Vin, albeit a disappointing fish stew. Judith has enjoyed a really nice client week with at least one reporting an early win; a £5k contract.

    What's Fuelled Their Fire?

A particularly interesting man booked himself into Judith’s diary this week and she talks about how this stretched her. Nicola is travelling back to Greece tomorrow and is slightly overwhelmed by how much study she has to do with The Story Grid,  Andre Chaperon and her new Curtis Brown course has now arrived too.

    Focus Of The Week

Both Nicola’s sister Sarah and Judith are interested in creating a living from successful pro blogging. Nicola shares some interesting stories, articles, interviews, facts and figures and Judith tries to work out whether it is something she could do or pay to have done for her, and which business models would lend themselves to the latter option.

Nicola talks about Pat Flynn and Yaro Starak and Jeni Hott and niche sites with high traffic which are monetised with Adsense. Judith proposes that in 2019 Patreon might be another way to be paid for content writing and creation.

    Resources:

    Words Of The Week

Nicola chooses Catch-up and Judith picks Frowst.

    Project Updates

Nicola’s encountered a glitch with her new passion project website and she and Judith discuss
effective workarounds. She’s found a shining specimen or two for her new VA. Judith turned up in her new role of writer on Monday as promised and created and published two rather ordinary blog posts, but it was a start. Commitment made and met.

    Who Or What's Impressed

Judith was moved by Andy Murray’s tearful interview in Melbourne and Nicola has enjoyed Ben Fogle’s TV show New Lives in the Wild.

  • Own It! 210 | Replacing Your Trusted VA

Nicola’s real-life challenge is to replace her trusted VA since her sister Sarah is moving on to pastures new. Judith and Nicola debate how to find, hire, train, manage and delegate to any replacement, whether full or part-time.

    In The Show

Nicola has been re-learning the art of job applications, helping daughter Phoebe apply for one. She’s heartened to discover there are lots of entry-level digital marketing jobs. A discussion breaks out about the ideal CV 2019 style. And she’s manifested a new phone.

Judith’s met up with her new home-visiting beautician on Monday and hairdresser on Tuesday and remarks how the local hairdressers and beauty salons didn’t seem to care enough about her business to either answer their phones or have working websites. She’s also chuffed to have done her tax return and annual review of slash and burn strategy when it comes to expenses.

    What's Fuelled Their Fire?

Judith’s excited about running a Cashflow Game on the day this show goes live, in West London, although concerned about driving 18 miles through morning rush hour. And Nicola’s client, Jane, is planning a 21-Day Challenge.

    Focus Of The Week

This is Nicola’s real-life challenge, since her sister Sarah is moving on to pastures new. Judith and Nicola debate how to find, hire, train, manage and delegate to any replacement, whether full or part-time. Nicola’s already decided certain factors such as hiring for attitude, but everything else is up for grabs and she ends up feeling happier about the whole thing just for thinking and talking through her options.

    Words Of The Week

Nicola chooses Cough and Judith picks Ease.

    Project Updates

Nicola reports Own It’s download numbers were down in December due to only broadcasting two shows instead of the more normal four or five. And, unusually, for the second week running, Judith is contemplating new projects about online writing – Facebook Pages and Newsletters, both formed by a rush of blood to the head last week. Will she go ahead with either or both? Depends on take up. If they come, she will build it.

    Who Or What's Impressed

Nicola’s excited about sounds from outer space and by Steven Pressfield and Shawn Coyne and their two projects – Black Irish Books and The Story Grid: What Good Editors Know.  And Judith’s excited about the fact that it is her nephew’s birthday, he’s 27 today.
