During today's coronavirus response briefing, Governor Asa Hutchinson reported an additional 697 positive cases of COVID-19 with more than 25 new cases in seven counties. There were three more deaths and 19 more hospitalizations in the state. The governor said he's asking for 700 additional contact tracers. Right now, Arkansas has 213. Although they only make up about two percent of Northwest Arkansas's population of half a million people, Marshall Islanders make up about half of the deaths from COVID-19 in Benton and Washington Counties. Community leaders and advocates say they're alarmed at the health and socioeconomic disparities that have led to the disproportionate hospitalizations and deaths in the Marshallese community. They also say the state needs a dedicated approach to curb the spread of the virus.

At least two Arkansas towns have passed COVID-19 emergency public mask-wearing measures with the establishment of additional county and city codes likely in the coming months. Calls for a unified mask code in Arkansas have been rejected by Governor Asa Hutchinson and Secretary of Health Nate Smith, saying the state's voluntary mask requirements are sufficient. So far, over a dozen states have statewide public mask-wearing mandates.

The Arkansas Department of Health has issued guidance to curb the potential of spreading COVID-19 in the workplace as Arkansans return to work. The ADH also has protocol in place to track cases and monitor for outbreaks. The Arkansas Center for Health Improvement has issued its own set of precautions as part of an effort to prompt employers to take more responsibility in protecting employees and customers.

Arkansas is one of more than 40 states that applied for and received Pandemic Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program funding. Electronic benefits transfer payment cards worth hundreds of dollars are in the mail this month to qualifying families for food purchases.
