As you paddle past the quiet towns along the Missouri River, it's easy to forget they were once bustling hubs of commerce, communication, and community. In this episode, Kimberly Peek explores how the Missouri shaped the towns along the MR340 race route, transforming simple river landings into thriving communities connected by steamboats carrying everything from mail and coffee to families chasing new beginnings.
More than two centuries later, the river is still doing what it has always done: bringing people together. Whether you're racing, supporting a paddler, or simply exploring the river, some of the best stories are found in the people you meet along the way.
TOURISM, DINING, ATTRACTIONS:
I will be adding tips from ground crews to the show notes as I see updates in the Facebook group.
This tip comes from the 2025 race: Beckner's Peaches - delicious peaches, jams, blueberries, corn. - just off 224 between Napoleon and Lexington. (So keep an eye out as you travel on the first day!)

What if the Missouri River is telling a story you've never noticed?
In this new season of the Paddle Sports Lifestyle Podcast, host Kimberly Peek begins a journey down the MR340 race route, exploring the history, towns, landmarks, and people that have shaped the Missouri River for centuries.
The series begins where the MR340 begins: Kaw Point. Whether you're racing the MR340, planning a future paddle, or simply fascinated by the history of America's great rivers, we hope this series will change the way you look at the Missouri and the MR340.
See you on the river!
