    Talked w Dr. Kendall Nettles, Professor/Researcher at Scripps in Jupiter, FL. Much of the work at Scripps Florida is geared toward basic biomedical research. Professor Nettles and his team are doing Breast Cancer research and with the newer technology are able to identify different proteins on the cells and how estrogen/estrogen inhibiting drugs affect them. They are working towards creating treatments that are more effective for patients that don't responds to current hormone therapies. We discussed breakthroughs in T-cell therapies regarding lymphoma and how researchers are trying to adapt that delivery system to other diseases.   • PB PERS Kravis 26thSeason
    Talked with Ashley Douglass, Kravis Center and Elizabeth Dashiell, Public Relations Coor. It's the 26th season for the Kravis Center and they have a great line up of shows. And it's the 10th anniversary of them adding their Kravis on Broadway series. The Kravis on Broadway shows this year include: The Book of Mormon, Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I, Finding Neverland, Cabaret, The Illusionists Live from Broadway, The Bodyguard, and Something Rotten. They also have a wonderful line up of orchestra's in the Regional Arts Concert series. Listeners can buy individual tickets for shows or tickets for an entire series.     Talked with Sarah Smedley, Talking Books Manager and Chris Jankow, System Activities Coordinator, Palm Beach County Library. Sarah works with the Talking Books division. It's a free service for folks who qualify (Doctor authorization required). It provides Braille and recorded material to Palm Beach County residents who are certified legally blind, visually impaired or physically handicapped and can't hold a book. The physical limitations do not have to be permanent in order to qualify. Listeners can reach Sarah at 561-649-5486. Chris works on a variety of programs. Right now he's compiling the list of authors who are going to be part of their 10th annual "Writer's Live" series, including Tim Dorsey and JJ Jance. They have lots of digital programs including: Hoopla Digital, Axis 360, Freegal, Overdrive, RB Digital, Flipster, Press Reader and Full Text Finder. They also have programs in the libraries such as Tai Chi, Drawing Still Lifes, Educational Seminars on Health Insurance, etc. There are also volunteer opportunities.   • PB PERS Wounded Veterans Relief Fund
    Talked with Mike Durkee, Exec. Dir., Wounded Veteran's Relief Fund formerly Wounded Warriors of SF and Chase Malcolm, Board Member, Teach the Beach. Wounded Veterans Relief Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing immediate emergency financial assistance to eligible disabled veterans who have served in the wars and conflicts since 9/11. They work in conjunction with the V.A. Hospital to determine need. Teach the Beach is a 501c3 designed to create awareness and educate people in our respective communities on ways they can conserve our local oceans and environments. Both charities have events on November 18th. Wounded Veterans have their 3rd Annual Running for Heroes 5K in the morning at Riverbend Park in Jupiter, FL from 7a-Noon and then Teach the Beach is holding their 3rd Annual BandsandBrews event at Carlin Park in Jupiter, FL starting at 1pm.     Talked with Margaret Dyer, Chair for 32nd annual Salt Water Sisters Fishing Tournamnent. It's through the Stuart Sailfish Club Foundation. The Stuart Sailfish Club was formed more than 75 years ago in 1936 and incorporated in January of 1941. It is one of the oldest sportfishing clubs in the United States, formed for the purpose of promoting the conservation of gamefish and encouraging visitors to fish in Martin County waters. This years event is being held at Pirate's Cove Resort & Marina 4307 SE Bayview St Stuart, FL. The proceeds this year go to Friends in Pink and Windsor Community Angels.     Talked with Hanna and Mindy Guttentag from Crohn's Colitis Foundation. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) affect more than 1.6 million Americans. That’s one in every 200 Americans living with one of these debilitating, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. The fastest growing patient population is children under the age of 18. Crohn's disease may affects anywhere along the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Symptoms of these diseases may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, debilitating fatigue, and extreme weight loss. Patients can be diagnosed at any age, but are most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35. Many patients experience numerous hospitalizations. About 23 to 45 percent of people with ulcerative colitis and up to 75 percent of people with Crohn’s disease will eventually require surgical intervention for their disease. Their mission at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League of the Palm Beaches, Incorporated is to provide shelter to lost, homeless and unwanted animals, to provide spay and neuter and other medical services for companion animals, and to care for, protect, and find quality homes for homeless and neglected companion animals, to advocate animal welfare, community involvement and education to further the bond between people and animals. As part of their mission on Saturday September 9th they are hosting a giant adoption event at PBC Convention center. There will be 30+ animal rescue organizations there.     Talked with Jamie Bond, Place of Hope's Advancement Officer for Treasure Coast. Place of Hope has campuses in Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, Hobe Sound, Port St Lucie and Boca Raton. It's a state licensed children's organization that provides family-style foster care (emergency and long-term): family outreach and intervention; maternity care; safety for domestic minor sexually trafficked victims; transitional housing support; adoption and foster care recruitment. They are celebrating they 16th anniversary and are hosting 2 golf tournaments in Sept to raise funds for foster services. The PBC tournament is sold out but, they still have a few openings for September 29th at Piper's Landing Yacht & Country Club.     Talked with Rich and Melody from Special Olympics Florida - Palm Beach County. Special Olympics is a charity that provides year-round sports training and competition to children and adults 8 years of age and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They offer 15 different sports to choose from including bowling, track and field, bocce, stand up paddle board, basketball, swimming, etc. They also do fundraisers, one is coming up at Downtown at the Gardens on 8/26 Tu-Tu Two Mile Run/Walk sponsored by Tri Bike Run benefiting Special Olympics (info is on their Facebook page).   • PB PERS BigDog Resource Depot
    Talked with Zara, Courtney and Chelsea from Big Dog Ranch Rescue. They all volunteer with BDRR and definitely recommend it as a great way for students to meet their community service hours. They just did an open house at their new location and have several fundraisers coming up in August including a paint your pottery night at Picasso and Metaluscious concert at Boston's on the Beach. And they received a grant to the adoption fees for 100 dogs to go to active/retired military and first responders. For more info, listeners can to www.bdrr.org. I also spoke with Jennifer from Resource Depot. Their organization focuses on reusing/repurposing items to keep them out of the landfills. They received 30,000 pounds of donations in June alone. They have a warehouse on Belvedere and folks can come purchase by the bin or via annual memberships. A lot of teachers use items for their classrooms. They have volunteer positions open for students as well and they are doing hands on programs where then teach classes using the donated items.
