Panda's Talking Games

Hi pandas! We admit it — we dropped the ball. Life happened and recording did not. We’ll be back next week with more one shot and campaign (and outtake) goodness, but for this week here is a little waveform carol that we would usually release only to patrons that we’re sharing to thank you all for listening and say Happy Pandadays!

Everyone’s got a comfort zone they fall in to with PCs — show us yours!  Phil and Senda talk about their comfort zones, how to mitigate the annoyance of other players when you stick to your comfort zone, and tips for how to break out. There was also a battle of waveform carols. That happened. It was late.

Hey pandas! So last week was Thanksgiving here in the US, and while we thought we had everything planned out so that we would still be on schedule, life came up the only night we could record before holiday travel started. Since we wouldn’t want to miss a week, here is the audio of the live show we did at Acadecon, in panda suits! Patreons already have access to the video to see this, but we’ll be releasing the video to the public also sometime this month. We did a question round up on some things that had been hanging around that we didn’t think we could fill a whole show with, messed up a lot, and this my friends…this is what it sounds like before I put all that stuff at the end.

Enjoy!

Senda and Phil show us how they handle leveling up characters mid session! It’s not something we’ve done a lot but we tackle it anyway. Why would you plan to level up in the middle of a game session? If you’re going to, what are the best ways to do it without interrupting the flow of the game itself? In more news, I can’t remember the words to the song, we sing a couple extras, and we learn Phil’s college nick name.

We stalked another game designer! This time we found Strix, on third of the magical matrix behind the current Kickstarter Bluebeard’s Bride. Strix does all the things on the internet and studies games as way more than a hobby. She joins us to talk about Bluebeard’s Bride both as a fairy tale and a game of capital H Horror. We also confused her a lot y singing our opening and closing songs on mic. We gotta get better at not weirding people out, you guys.

Bluebeard’s Bride is on kickstarter until 11/20 and is already way past funded:  https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1921129910/bluebeards-bride?ref=nav_search

Show us how you flip your one shots in to campaigns! Phil and Senda talk about what happens when you decide to turn your one shot in to a campaign, and what pieces you will need to consider in making the change. Sometimes you never planned to makes this any longer than one game, and sometimes it was like a test run, so we approach this topic from both perspectives. We make promises about future Mon Cal episodes.

One Shots vs. Shorter One Shots

Show us how you prep for short one shots and….normal one shots? Senda and Phil field a prep and length question about running 1-2 hour one shots vs. more standard 3-4 hour one shots. Phil wears a hoodie and does strange things that crack Senda up with the hood. I have a bad feeling about this. They managed to keep the episode *almost* short, but not the outtakes! Patrons, check out the patron posts on patreon.com/mmp for the extras!

Show us how you deal with problem players in one shots and campaigns….no one wants to face it but it’s better to have a plan! Some ideas on handling issues for conventions and home campaigns.

PATRONS! There were many MANY outtakes again this week — check out Patreon for the ones that wouldn’t fit. Want to hear more from us, including Senda’s songs and the extra outtakes? Consider backing us on Patreon at http://patreon.com/MMP and thank you for your support!

Show us how you design awesome one shots! I mean really, Grant, show us how you design those awesome one shots, please? Phil and Senda sit down with game designer Grant Howitt (One Last Job, Unbound, Royal Blood, Warrior Poet, etc. etc. etc.) to pick his brain on some opinions about game design for one shots vs. campaigns.
