Show notes:This week we read 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry. The Giver is a 1993 American young adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which at first appears to be utopian but is revealed to be dystopian as the story progresses.I'm an idiot because i asked for stand alone sci-fi book recommendations and someone suggested this. I thought it was a stand alone book and not part of a series, so i made my opinion based on that. Sigh...If you have any suggestions or feedback, you can do this anonymously via this Curious Cat link: https://curiouscat.me/inspyre_entPodcast descriptionIn this Podcast we'll be reviewing/discussing a book we've read on a weekly basis. Last week we kicked off the year with a special guest and for the episode we've followed up with another amazing guest.Halima Hagi-Mohamed was born in Nairobi, Kenya to Somali parents. She was raised in Fresno, California and is the second youngest of nine children. Hagi-Mohamed has been writing since the young age of twelve. She got her start by writing on popular story sharing website Wattpad, and later ventured into writing fictional stories about life in the Somali diaspora. In 2010, she won the online Pen Writing Competition, placing first in her division. A year later, she created a Facebook account ‘For Somali Gabdho’ alongside younger sister Fartoon, wherein they published short stories for a large audience of Muslim women. In her free time, she likes to read and write fiction. “Amilah” is her first book.Support her amazing work by buying her book here:UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amilah-Halima-Hagi-Mohamed/dp/1543177190/US: https://www.amazon.com/Amilah-Halima-Hagi-Mohamed/dp/1543177190Halima's social links:Facebook: HalimawritesInstagram: HalimawritesShow notes:This week we read 'Amilah' by Halima Hagi Mohamed. We started off with a Challenge segment and then we got into an interview with the amazing Halima Hagi Mohamed aka Halimawrites followed by our normal discussion on the book.In Arabic, the word “Amilah” translates into the act of being hopeful. In dark times, we find ease in giving up, and giving into our own gloom and despair. Even through these dark times, we find glimmers of hope. These glimmers are what inspired Halima to write Amilah. “Amilah” is a book of fictional short stories that explores difficult situations in the lives of various Somali Americans. From a young woman combating the negative stigma of having depression in her family, to a young man faced with the echoes of an ugly past. In Amilah, characters are faced with either succumbing to defeat or seeking hope. “Amilah” is a look into how hope can play an important role in the lives of the dejected and ever despairing.Intro: 0:00Challenge section: 1:29Interview: 21:40Book discussion: 46:10If you have any suggestions or feedback, you can do this anonymously via this Curious Cat link: https://curiouscat.me/inspyre_entDescriptionIn this Podcast we'll be reviewing/discussing a book we've read on a weekly basis. This week we only had 30 minutes to record, so we didn't have as much time as we would've liked to discuss the book in detail. However, consistency is key and i'm glad that we recorded an episode no matter how short it is. That's 3 books and 3 Podcast episodes in 3 weeks.Next week we will be back with a better episode, where we will try a few different things to make the Podcast a little more Interesting. In this Podcast we'll be reviewing/discussing a book we've read on a weekly basis.
