Disappointments can lead to deconstructing belief in God. And deconstruction can be healthy — taking apart our practices and beliefs to determine their truthfulness, usefulness, and impact. But where do we bring our doubts, and then what happens next? In Matthew 11, we find John the Baptist wrestling with his own disappointments and doubt, and he brought them straight to the source. Jesus responded with kindness, evidence, and a promise of blessing to those in a place of doubt who choose to trust. Are you a fan of fables? You know, nice stories that help us understand basic moral lessons? Some view the Bible that way, but a fable most certainly isn’t worth living for — or dying for. And if we’re going to count the Bible as our foundation for faith, then we must know it’s reliable history based on eyewitness accounts. We’ve got to know if it’s really God’s Word, recording His plan and His perspective on our world. So is it? Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, was one of the first to deconstruct his faith, and we learn from him what he came back to: The Bible is true, and that changes everything.

If we believe in the God of the Bible, then we must believe that He is good. But if He's good, how can He allow suffering? In Romans 8, we find that suffering is not a result of God’s action, but our own choice to sin. And our sin has not only cursed ourselves but also all of creation. So where does a good God come in? With a grand redemption plan that will one day result in so much good, it won’t be worth comparing to the bad.

Deconstruction ... all the cool kids are doing it. If you’ve got doubts, too, don’t demonize them; DO something with them. Examine what you believe. Then reconstruct what you’ve deconstructed on the truth! In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul does this: he examined the Resurrection of Christ, because he knew that if we don’t get this one thing right, then the building blocks of our beliefs won’t matter. The Resurrection is central; it’s certain; and it’s critical. And because of the Resurrection, we have a hope that lasts beyond this life.

If your life has been intersected by the Gospel, then you can never be the same. This is Paul's message as he concludes his letter to the people of Galatia, warning them against fleshly living and calling them to Spirit-led relationships, activity, and confidence — only possible by salvation through Jesus Christ. Through the Gospel, we rely not on what we can do or must do, but on what Christ has done and is doing. Will you respond to the Gospel?

How do you know if someone is really a Christian? And are you? There’s a way to find out. In Galatians, Paul says that the character of a person will showcase whether they truly know Christ or not. And he challenges us to evaluate our own lives to see if we are connected with Christ — and if we are, then remove the weeds, watch for the fruit, and wait to see God do the work of growing your faith.

We’re all good at grace. Needing it, that is! But when it comes to receiving God’s grace, we’re a mess and we can’t leave it alone. We end up either adding to it with a bunch of rules (called legalism) or taking from it because we’re disregarding all the rules (called licentiousness). And a little bit of either of those will ruin the entire batch of grace … like a toenail in your salsa. Instead, in the book of Galatians, Paul calls us to stop misusing and stop abusing God’s grace and simply enjoy it. Because Christ died for much more than a code Christianity — He came to give us abundant life.
