Cha Wa is a New Orleans band steeped in the traditions of Mardi Gras. J’Wan Boudreaux is a Mardi Gras Indian in the tradition of his forefathers. Along with Joe Gelini, Joe Maize, Thaddeus “Peanut” Ramsey, Ari Teitel and Clifton “Spug” Smith, they are Cha Wa. Their new Grammy nominated album is Spyboy.

J’Wan and Joe talked with Baruch about Cha Wa’s formation, J’Wan’s coming of age as a Mardi Gras Indian, and more, and we hear some great music!

Jim Roberts is a percussionist, producer, artist and educator who resides in Chapel Hill, NC, USA. He’s been banging on things since he was a baby beating on pots and pans. Now he’s bringing different kinds of percussion music together with various genres of music to create new music.

In 2018 Jim released an album called The Tao of Time which is a journey, a story, a sonic adventure. This album is fun, funny, beautiful, and ultimately elucidating.

Charles Wohlforth’s books include The Whale and the Supercomputer: On the Northern Front of Climate Change which won a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and more recently The Fate of Nature: Rediscovering Our Ability to Rescue the Earth.  Charles and Baruch discuss the significance of ice in forming the Earth’s surface, and to humanity.

Dr. Erin Pettit, Glaciologist of Oregon State University, just back from Antarctica, talks about a particular ice shelf she’s been monitoring for many years, and how it is changing, as well as describing what’s happening to a glacier on Washington’s Mt. Baker. Dr. Pettit is the founder of Inspiring Girls Expeditions which brings girls from all backgrounds on expeditions.

While there are still some folks who refuse to accept that human activity contributes to climate/atmospheric change, it’s clear that human activity of dumping chemicals and fumes into the atmosphere does have an effect. It is also clear that the climate of the Earth is changing. Glaciers, which have provided water to many societies for thousands of years, are melting away. What will happen when the glaciers are gone?
