Parent Well in our Digital World – We’re Not Throwing Out the Computer!

Listen Later

Part One: Guest Interview

Gloria, founder of The Parent Coaching Institute (PCI) and author of Parenting Well in a Media Age, talks with PCI Certified Parent Coach® Rhonda Moskowitz. Rhonda, a mother of three, has been working with parents for over 30 years—as a special education teacher, early childhood administrator and currently as a PCI Certified Parent Coach®. Rhonda works with parents who are overwhelmed and say “I just don’t know what to do any more!” Parents find Rhonda when they have tried many things, but nothing has changed. She helps moms and dads create practical solutions for their parenting concerns. In fact, her parent coaching company is called: Practical Solutions Parent Coaching. Rhonda works with parents who have children between the ages of birth and 18 and she also works with parents who have children who have been diagnosed with ADHD. Like all PCI trained parent coaches, Rhonda helps moms and dads focus on what is working. And then from there client and coach create a picture of what they want things to look like. Once that is attained, the coaching centers on practical solutions to get parents to the life they want to lead.

This podcast centers on the fact that one thing we know for sure, screen technology is here to stay. We can’t throw it out, ignore it, or pretend it isn’t there. In fact, we wouldn’t want to. Right? It’s a high-tech world with lots of benefits most of us enjoy. Yet, our high-tech world has its pitfalls as we know. Kids preoccupied with screen technologies miss out on other important areas of their lives. Media message are often outside the bounds of our own values. The proliferation of mobile devices and tablets means our kids are always connected. With all this going on, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for parents to set boundaries and balance their kids’ lives. That’s because most moms and dads today have no roadmap for how to parent in the midst of a rapidly changing technological revolution.

This podcast presents a practical roadmap. First it begins with Rhonda and Gloria discussing what an ideal use of screen technologies might look like for most families. Then it outlines reasonable use with many excellent examples and do-able activities—even within a busy day. Rhonda emphasizes the importance of getting clear ourselves and knowing for sure what limits we want for our kids and why. That’s the first important step—and often times, the hardest. But once that is accomplished, ideals flow fresh like a mountain stream, because parents have the clarity they need to not only set boundaries and rules, but to follow-up consistently.

Tune in for practical ideas you can use today that will support you family’s healthy media habits, and join us for a few laughs, as well. We are sure you will relate!

Part Two: The Parent Coaching Corner

Last week I began coaching Lindsey, mom of two daughters, Charlie, age 5.5 and Olive, age, 2.5. Lindsey is coming to coaching for three basic reasons:

• She wants to provide more activities for the girls outside of screen technologies.

• She wants to deal pro-actively with the school and her daughter’s tutor who are demanding screen use for Charlee who’s only a kindergartner. Lindsey doesn’t wholeheartedly agree with this and but she wants to deal with the issues positively—in a cooperative way.
• Being a pro-active mom, she wants to prepare for the girls’ future use of screen technologies as they get older.

In this session Lindsey explains the strengths of each of her daughters, along with her own strengths. She shares poignant stories as well. We will harness these strengths when we address her challenges later in our Design Phase of the coaching. For now, we are developing a firm foundation based on Lindsey’s many strengths and the special qualities in each of her daughters. Tune in for an uplifting session!
