  • Why Your WORDS Matter | POF39

Words matter and we often aren’t aware that we’re labeling our child’s behavior in a negative way.  We justify it by seeing it as, “calling it like it is” or “just pointing it out” to our child.  If your child is shy…well, they’re shy….right?

As parents we have to remember the huge impact our words have on our children.  When they display “undesirable” behavior that we then assign a negative label that label can become part of their self-identity and their inner voice.

What I’m teaching you to do through this episode is to “Reframe” the way your see your child and their behavior.  Why?  Because when we see our child differently…we see a DIFFERENT child.

Can you imagine what life would be like without that negative voice or your hurtful self-talk?  That would be freeing!  This is the gift you can give your kids RIGHT NOW!

Scroll to the bottom for your FREE Guide to Reframing Behavior!

    From the Podcast:

Behavior is often temporary, but labels can be wired into your child’s subconscious for a lifetime.

We reframe behavior for our child’s benefit AND for the benefit of the parent as well because the way we see our child influences our thoughts perspectives and attitudes about our child.

We can reframe our child’s behavior in a positive way that empowers them and isn’t rooted in SHAME and DISAPPROVAL.

  • What if You Don't Like Your Child? | POF38
Most of us, whether we admit it or not, would love it if our kids came out as a “mini me.”  Wouldn’t it be so much easier if they did?  Do you have a child that is the EXACT OPPOSITE of you and it drives you crazy?  Does it make it hard for you to connect with them?  Is it hard for you to like them?   What words do you use to describe your child?
When we have a child that is so different from us, we usually pick out their differences and call them weaknesses.  In this episode, my guest, author and parenting specialist, Wendy Gossett, shows how we can turn our child’s differences traits that we can celebrate!
Our child’s temperament is something we can’t change (same without temperament) so intentionally choosing how we look at our child will change the way we see our kids!
    About Wendy Gossett
Wendy Gossett is a best-selling author, speaker and parenting specialist who helps parents understand their children by using temperament psychology and neuroscience. She has over twenty years of experience in education, working in the classroom and corporate sector.
However, all her educational experience didn’t help when parenting her daughter. Because they were opposites, she struggled to connect. Since the User Manual for parenting her daughter didn’t exist, she set out to create one.
She was seen by people all over the world in a viral video where she was embarrassing her seventeen-year old son in a Colorado blizzard while stranded on the Interstate. She never dreamed that this family video would be seen all over the world and talked about by Hoda Kotb, Debra Norville, the BackStreet Boys, and even Princess Kate!
Because she has struggled as a helicopter parent, an explosive parent and an embarrassing parent, she wants to help other parents struggle…a little bit less!

Don’t dismiss enjoyable experiences as lightweight or trivial and don’t think that grinding and wearying stressful experiences are somehow the foundation of a good life.  No, it’s the opposite,  positive experiences fill us up and negative ones wear us down.

Remember what you are noticing is not made up, these are experiences that are real and you aren’t making them up and just ‘thinking positive’.

Set an Intentions for your day

Intentions are powerful because when you set your intentions, your thoughts follow, as do your actions

    • listen more and talk less
    • I will pause before I react
    • I will not take anything personally
    • I will look to find the fun and joy in the day

Or Implementation intentions – when X happens I will do Y

    Self Compassion - Ask yourself:

    • Am I being kind and understanding to myself?
    • Do I acknowledge shortcomings and failure as experiences shared by everyone?
    • Am I keeping my negative feelings in perspective?
    • Write a letter to yourself

Your struggles in parenting are not happening to you, they are happening for you to help you grow yourself up.

How do you know if your child is the one in the lead?  They are precocious, bossy, demanding, unwilling to take your lead and defiant.  We usually want to shut these kids down but in fact what they are saying is that I don’t feel seen, heard or understood, so we need to get even bigger to get them to see we are their best bet so they can relax.

How to bring swagger.  Your child, if they are in the position of being in charge, will be two steps ahead of you so that means you need to jump forward and anticipate the needs your child.  This means you have to do some work to plan what your child’s needs are going to be.  Not easy but worth it!

Being “Large and In charge” means you show up with kindness, empathy, wisdom and firmness (holding firm boundaries).  You are constantly looking for cues from your child to say, I see you, I hear you, and I get you.

  • How to Advocate for Your Child | POF34

It’s hard enough to bring a typical child into this world but what if your baby is born sick?  You are thrust into a world that is completely foreign to you full of medical jargon and often confusing and counter-intuitive information.  You want to use your intuition and protect your child but its so hard to know what you should be worried about and what is just normal for a new baby.  You can be left feeling angry, confused, lonely, ashamed, helpless, overwhelmed, scared, and lost.  What if you have an older child at home?  How do you make sure they don’t get lost in the mix?  What if your marriage is suffering because of this?  What if you need to go back to work?

Through Annette Hines’ experience, she now teaches you how not to be brushed aside and advocate for your child so you are heard, taken seriously and ultimately get the best care for your child.

    About Annette Hines

Annette, an award-winning powerhouse advocate for the special needs community to share an important with your listeners. According to the CDC, disabilities affect 1 in 7 children. Over the past 2 decades, the number of children with chronic health conditions doubled from 12.8 percent to 26.6 percent. Not only can taking care of a child with a disability seem like an insurmountable task for a parent but making sure their child has a secure future when they are no longer there can seem daunting as well and can cause increased worry, stress and struggle.

She is the author of the best-seller Butterflies and Second Chances: A Mom’s Memoir of Love and Loss, the inspiring true story of a mother’s special needs journey, and her struggle to secure the best possible life for her child in the face of bureaucratic resistance and marital crisis. It is a story of sacrifice, dedication, and the life-altering adjustments a special needs parent has to make when confronted with the unthinkable—the loss of a child. But most of all, it’s about love and an extraordinary mother-daughter relationship that flourished without words in the darkest shadows of adversity.

She has spent the last two decades as a professional advocating for people with special needs through her firm, Special Needs Law Group of Massachusetts, PC and is the host of Parenting Impossible – The Special Needs Survival Podcast

    From the Podcast:

If you are struggling with a special needs child take these into consideration:

    • Go easy on yourself – so it’s frozen pizza again tonight! Your kids are getting fed.
    • You are the expert when it comes to your child. The expert isn’t somebody else!  You are the one who has the most information about your child from all the different areas and experts.  YOU are in the seat of authority.
    • Communication is key. You can’t communicate through emotion, even if you are feeling so many emotions.  Be clear, concise and able to communicate the end goal – both written and orally.  Come to the table with ideas as well – don’t rely on everyone else to have the solutions.
    • Know when you are in danger. This might be the time to get some legal support or opinion
    • Embrace what you CAN do!
