It’s hard enough to bring a typical child into this world but what if your baby is born sick? You are thrust into a world that is completely foreign to you full of medical jargon and often confusing and counter-intuitive information. You want to use your intuition and protect your child but its so hard to know what you should be worried about and what is just normal for a new baby. You can be left feeling angry, confused, lonely, ashamed, helpless, overwhelmed, scared, and lost. What if you have an older child at home? How do you make sure they don’t get lost in the mix? What if your marriage is suffering because of this? What if you need to go back to work?
Through Annette Hines’ experience, she now teaches you how not to be brushed aside and advocate for your child so you are heard, taken seriously and ultimately get the best care for your child.
About Annette Hines
Annette, an award-winning powerhouse advocate for the special needs community to share an important with your listeners. According to the CDC, disabilities affect 1 in 7 children. Over the past 2 decades, the number of children with chronic health conditions doubled from 12.8 percent to 26.6 percent. Not only can taking care of a child with a disability seem like an insurmountable task for a parent but making sure their child has a secure future when they are no longer there can seem daunting as well and can cause increased worry, stress and struggle.
She is the author of the best-seller Butterflies and Second Chances: A Mom’s Memoir of Love and Loss, the inspiring true story of a mother’s special needs journey, and her struggle to secure the best possible life for her child in the face of bureaucratic resistance and marital crisis. It is a story of sacrifice, dedication, and the life-altering adjustments a special needs parent has to make when confronted with the unthinkable—the loss of a child. But most of all, it’s about love and an extraordinary mother-daughter relationship that flourished without words in the darkest shadows of adversity.
She has spent the last two decades as a professional advocating for people with special needs through her firm, Special Needs Law Group of Massachusetts, PC and is the host of Parenting Impossible – The Special Needs Survival Podcast

Are you silly? How comfortable are you acting goofy? Sadly, we don’t have much room in our lives for fun and games. We are tired, stressed, rushed and exhausted. We may be stiff and tired and easily bored when we try to get on the floor and play – especially when it means we have to switch gears from our stressful days or when you know there are a million other things you need to be doing. BUT fun and play makes our kids happy and us too!!!
Did you know that play is how kids sort out and make sense of their world and experiences? If your child is too young to tell you what’s going on with them, you can find out through play.
Does your child refuse to do what you ask? Why not diffuse the situation with a joke or a tickle? We don’t always have to be so serious!
Listen to find out how you can harness the power of fun and play!

In this episode, we are talking to girls in middle school, age 10 to 14. Do not underestimate girls at this age! It’s right at this age that girls have the abilities and interests getting ready to launch. In other words, they are already becoming who they want to be! That’s where Illana Raia’s book, website, and mentorship program called Être Girls steps in to share the right resources and mentors to help these girls along their journey.
Normally we are asking our kids WHAT do they want to DO but Être Girls and founder Illana Raia are asking them WHO do they want to BE? Illana talks about how parents can nurture your child’s interests and find mentors to connect with your child. Why? Because it’s this age group are more likely to quit their activities because they are overscheduled, self-critical and often underestimated. Matching girls with professional, successful female leaders is all about inspiring young girls and showing them what’s possible for them and what they can achieve. Besides, these female leaders were once middle schoolers too, and can share how they made it through!
Être Girls believes in educating girls in many areas such as innovation, philanthropy, self-confidence, finances, courage and many more.
About Illana RaiaA former Skadden lawyer and occasional guest lecturer at Columbia, Illana has been busy since 2016 founding Être - a resource and mentorship platform for girls approaching high school. She thinks of Être as knowledge strategy for girls - highlighting valuable tools and role models they will need to change the world - and contributes regularly to HuffPost, Medium and Thrive Global on these issues. Named a Mogul Influencer in 2017, Illana has appeared in the HuffPost "Talk To Me" video series, participated in the 2018 Balance Project Interviews and the 2019 #WomenWhoRock campaign and has been featured on Cheddar TV and podcasts like The Other 50%, UBS’ Signature Series, Finding Brave and Women To Watch. Her journey from lawyer to founder was profiled in Forbes and her first book - Être: Girls, Who Do You Want To Be? - arrived on Day of the Girl 2019.

Are you holding on to anger for your child? Your children? Are you angry at yourself?
In this episode, I’m talking about forgiveness. As parents, especially moms, we hold ourselves up to an impossible standard of the type of mom we think we should be. One that we will never achieve (because it’s a ludicrously high standard). Then we beat ourselves up and put ourselves down, we feel shame, we think we are bad parents and we sometimes hate ourselves.
We also have anger towards our kids. We feel resentment, bitterness, frustration, helpless, trapped, unappreciated and depleted
I want to show you how you can forgive yourself and your kids because forgiveness puts you in the driver’s seat of your life and it means you take your power back.
Holding on to disappointment and shame for yourself, for how you see yourself as a parent, robs you of your happiness and peace. Holding on to resentment and frustration with your child stops you from entering into empathy.
Forgiveness opens the door to self-acceptance, connection and empathy.

Your thoughts are not facts.
When you have a negative thought about yourself as a parent and your child, you can challenge them so you can let go of the negative emotions that are holding you back!
Byron Katie, in the book, Love What Is, uses a series of questions to help you challenge your thoughts.
When you can isolate one that doesn’t serve you, ask yourself,
Our teens are faced with so much stress that we can often look past, minimize or disregard what they are going through until the bottom falls out, they get in trouble, or start engaging in dangerous or self-destructive behavior.
My guest Jennie Marie Battistin, explains Mindfulness as “…being fully present and cultivating awareness of your surroundings and your actions.” Practices of mindfulness can help you respond better to stress, improve your relationships and perform better in school (and work).
Learn how to check in with your kids in a non-threatening way, get them to engage in mindfulness so they can learn these techniques now, so you have them for the future!

Easing into mindfulness – just with breathwork alone, we can see changes in the brain that can make a positive impact in your life. These techniques and many more are found in Jennie’s book, Mindfulness for Teens in 10 Minutes a Day.
4 Square Breathing
This Breathing technique is probably one of the easiest and quickest ways to calm the brain and bring you back to the present moment with an alert and stress-free mind. If possible, use this breathing technique for at least 8 minutes to maximize results.
Close your eyes and imagine a relaxing environment. An example is to picture the beach or ocean. As you inhale, imagine the waves gently rolling up the beach and you exhale imagine the waves rolling back out.
