    1. Know the Signs

The more you are aware of both the physical and emotional signs of stress, the more quickly you can intervene. Stress can manifest in different ways. If any of the following show up, you might want to take a closer look:

    • Problems sleeping (this may indicate worry)
    • Changes in behaviour (for example a calm child who becomes agitated and vice-versa)

  • POF17: School Choice with Andrew Campanella

We all want our kids to get a good education and be successful in school.  BUT not every school fits your child’s unique needs and abilities. Is your child gifted?  Does your child have learning disabilities? Is the school your child in just not a good fit? Do you know you have a choice and the right to choose a school that fits your child?  Are you aware of the many options that are available? This may seem like an exciting concept but also daunting because where do you start?

In this episode, Andrew Campanella, the President of National School Choice week in The United States talks about how and when parents can look for alternatives for their kids based on their needs.

Why should you care?  The fact is that if kids are unhappy in school, even if the school is considered a good school, it can lead to higher rates of dropouts and for students that drop out, this affects their confidence, and self esteem.  Studies show that students who dropout are at higher risk of incarceration, will earn less over their lifetime and have shorter lifespans.

This episode is of great value to every parent with school aged children, no matter where you live!

  • POF16: Relationship First

Put your relationship first with my child? Won’t that threaten my authority? Won’t they walk all over me?  When you parent by putting your relationship with your child first, you still have clear limits and expectations BUT you DON’T use your power over your child to shame her or force him to obey….OR ELSE!

When we parent putting the relationship first with our kids, they are much more likely to cooperate with us and it’s easier to find solutions to issues that come up because our kids feel safe coming to us because they know we won’t resort to shaming, blaming, criticizing, etc.  We all want our kids to trust us and respect us and come to us and tell us what’s going on with them and this is the way to do it.  Listen for easy ways to build a strong relationship with your child and learn how to avoid the pitfalls of relationship killers!

Those lectures…. Talk LESS and Listen MORE

Remember, it’s more powerful to listen to your kids ideas, and thought then it is to bulldoze over them with your ‘wisdom’ and ‘experience’.  How often has lecturing to your kids created the change you were looking for in the first place?  How often to you glaze over when you are lectured to?   Give “talk less and listen more” a try the next time you have the urge to lecture your child.  Need tips on listening?  See below!

Has anyone ever made you feel like you were the only other person in the room because they were so focused on you?  So intently listening to you?  How did that make you feel?  I be it felt amazing!  I know it does.  You feel special and it...

  • POF14: Potty Planning with Rebecca Larson
Today we are talking about all things potty and how you can actually potty train your baby in the early days.  As a mom of a teen and pre-teen I’m past the years of diapers and potties but I’m thrilled to be able to bring the Potty Plan to my listeners as an alternative to using diapers only. Listen in as we discuss this a parent-led, proactive routine-based method for infant potty training (0-12months). That means – parents take the lead and offer their babies assistance to go to the bathroom following a natural elimination routine.

    About Rebecca Larsen
Rebecca Larsen is a best-selling published picture book author from New Zealand. She lives in Pāpāmoa with her two sons (5 and 7) and Canadian husband. The couple had their children in Canada then moved back to New Zealand to be closer to family.  After experimenting with elimination communication techniques, the couple found an approach to infant potty training that was easy to implement, fun and successfully had their boys wearing underwear around 18 months. Both boys quickly learned the routine with success in their first week after birth. They are passionate to share this technique with parents as a mindful alternative approach that fits in well with busy on-the-go modern conscientious parents. @AuthorRebeccaLarsen

Poop Happens!! With the Potty Plan, we are teaching our baby to use the toilet to eliminate poo.  Some tips if you want to try are to:
Pay attention to your child’s regular cycle
    Offer the toilet after feeding
Look for cues (grunting and straining)
