  • The Benefits of Play and Fun! | POF174

Our kids are naturally curious explorers who can easily get caught up in their own world of make believe and play! It’s wonderful to experience and it’s vital to their growth and development. BUT we don’t have to take on the role of full-time entertainer, and our kids don’t need us to (it’s also not a crime if our kids are bored!).

My guest, Dr. Jody LeVos, explains all of this and talks about how play helps kids develop social emotional skills, cognitive abilities, solve problems, develop physically, and most importantly, make sense of and explore the world around them.

The best part about play is that it’s FUN! Life is heavy enough and having fun is good for all of us.

In this episode, Dr. LeVos and I talk about different kinds of play, how it meets multiple needs for your kiddos, builds connection and creates moments that are remembered for a lifetime.

I know you’ll love hearing this conversation and Dr. LeVos and I hope you will leave the episode wanting to do something fun with your kids, you’ll never regret it!

    • #safesocial | POF172

Should we be thinking about social media as risky behavior, equal to drinking alcohol, doing drugs, unprotected sex and operating heavy machinery? Sciencedirect.com defines risky behavior as: “Risk taking is any consciously, or non-consciously controlled behavior with a perceived uncertainty about its outcome, and/or about its possible benefits or costs for the physical, economic or psycho-social well-being of oneself or others.” In other words, it’s behavior that can cause harm to yourself and others.

My guest Bailey Parnell is an expert in keeping our kids and us safe on social media and brings a wealth of research and information to the topic.

Our kids are especially vulnerable on social media for many reasons. So where do we start?

First, we need to take a look at ourselves and how we consume social media. Do we use it to numb ourselves, to compare, or is it a fun pastime? Our kids are watching us so let's make sure we take a moment to notice how, when and where we interact with it, and lead by example.

It’s important that from the moment our kids have access to a device, we start talking about the risks to their safety and others. As our kids get older and want to be connected on social platforms, it’s important to have boundaries and talk to them about what drives social media and how powerful and damaging social currency can be. Bailey says the research shows that how we respond to what we see on social media is dependent on how good we are already feeling about ourselves. So if we are feeling low, it can make you feel lower and if you feel good, you aren’t as affected. This means we need to invest in our kids' sense of self (and our own) outside of the online world.

In this episode, Bailey and I talk about:

      • How teens are wired for comparison and risk-taking behavior
      • How girls are more frequently targeted for harassment
      • How to talk to your kids using a harm reduction approach
      • App suggestions for parents to help you navigate the social media world.

      • Bailey has generously given three helpful resources to the Parent Toolbox:

      • Defending Young Minds from Pornography | POF171

Talking to your kids about online safety, needs to be as normal as teaching them to safely cross the street. I know we would rather not talk about pornography but the reality is, that every child with a device connected to the internet, is a portal to porn. If you don’t talk to your kids, they will be all alone when they come across porn, (not if, when) and not know how to process what they’ve seen, or have the language for it.

Thankfully there are people like my guest, Kristen Jeson who is the founder of Defend Young Minds.com. I love talking to Kristen, but I also hate that I have to. Kristen and I spoke in 2020 about “porn proofing” your kids, and her books “Good Pictures, Bad Pictures”.

        This time we talk about:

        • The Naivete Gap for parents and what they “think” their kids have seen and what the truth is
        • The 5 things teens wish their parents knew about porn (listen to get the downloadable guide)
        • How sex and violence give us the biggest dopamine hit

        • How to React When Your Child Comes Out LGBTQ | POF170

I never thought I would be having this conversation in such a personal way. In this episode, I’m talking to my friend, and LGBTQIA+ educator and coach, Heather Hester, about what to do when your child comes out to you. For me, I’m sharing, for the first time, that one of my sons has come out as bisexual to me.

My own reaction surprised me because I’ve always been open, accepting and affirming of everyone in the LGTBQIA+ community all my life. This led me to questions like:

          Are you sure?

          How do you know?

          Is this just a phase?

I needed to take some time to digest my son’s truth as I know every parent needs to do. Heather is such a kind and understanding person who has been through this with two of her four children. She knows it can be messy and beautiful all at the same time.

The fact is, even if you don’t have an LGBYQIA+ child, your kids know someone who is. This matters because the statistics show that when a person comes from a supportive community and family, it significantly lower rates of them attempting suicide than in those who do not.

For helpful resources and more on what to say to your child when they come out, download Heather’s handout from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com

          About Heather Hester

Heather is a podcast host and an advocate and coach for parents and allies of LGBTQIA+ adolescents and young adults. She believes the coming out process is equal parts beautiful and messy. She works with her clients to let go of fear and the feelings of isolation so that they can reconnect with themselves and their child in a meaningful, grounded way as well as move through the coming out process with understanding and love. She is a writer, the mother of four (two of whom are LGBTQIA), and a student of life who believes in embracing the messiness, opening to education, strengthening through empowerment, and overcoming anything with love.

For so long, talking about periods, discharge, infections, smells, sex and how to take care of “down there” has been taboo, embarrassing, and associated with shame. NO MORE I SAY! Well, it’s not so much me saying it as it is my guest, Dr. Jennifer Lincoln!

Periods, PMS, the smell, and packing a “Period Kid” (genius!!)

Masterbation (look at it this way, it’s the safest sex they will ever have)

HPV vaccines, are they safe and necessary?

        • Surviving an Active Shooter Event | What to Teach Your Kids | POF168

In this Episode, I’m talking to my friend and Safety Expert, Jason Brick, on how to teach your kids how to stay safe during a school shooting. (But these strategies will work in any active shooter situation).

As a parent, we don’t want to have to think about this; it’s our worst nightmare that our child might be hurt or killed in a school shooting. Parenting is hard enough, without worrying about doing the simple things in life that should be safe like taking your kids to school and going to the grocery store.

Because mass shootings have become a “regular” occurrence, I want to help you, and help you teach your kids the skills to survive, should this happen to you.

In this video, Jason shares important insights on getting to know your school’s state of ‘readiness’ in the event of a shooting, what certifications they have and how and if they have trained for it. Don’t be shy about asking. Don’t worry about being a pest! It’s the school’s job to keep your kids safe and if they aren’t doing what they need to, you can hold them to account.

Jason shares an updated strategy that is more effective and proactive than the often used, “run, hide, fight”.

We talk about how to prepare your kids at any age, using games. It’s never too early to teach your kids in an age-appropriate way, to keep themselves safe.

What we talk about in this video will help to keep your kids and YOU safe, no matter where you are, because the strategies work in multiple scenarios. As Jason mentions, there have been enough mass shooter incidents that we now know what works and what doesn’t.

You can use this video to keep you safe from an active shooter in many situations so please share this with your friends and family so we can keep more people safe from injury and death.

The intention for my show is to build a community of parents that can have open and honest conversations about parenting without judgement or criticism. We all deserve access to help and support when we need it most.

I honour each parent and their path towards becoming the best parent they can be. My hope is to inspire more parents to consider the practice of Peaceful Parenting.

        • How the Sensory System Impacts Kids’ Behavior | POF167

This is the second time I’ve had Cindy Utzinger on my show, and I know it won’t be the last! She is an expert on the Sensory System and on kids with “Sensory Differences.” These are kids that don’t necessarily have a Sensory Processing Disorder diagnosis, but have sensitivities to light, sound, smells, touch, etc.

So often we misunderstand the behaviour of our kids, when in fact, they might be acting out because they are overstimulated or under stimulated. Your child hitting you might have more to do with their sensory system than them acting out.

Many parents also wonder, “Is there something wrong with my child?”, “Is my child on the spectrum?” and “Does my child have ADHD?” Cindy and I answer those questions and more!

In this episode we talk about:

          • The Vestibular and Proprioceptive systems, how they work, and how to use them to calm a child.
          • The relationship between the Sensory System and Anxiety
          • How Covid has affected our children’s sensory system
          • What behaviors are typically labelled as “bad” that just might be sensory seeking
          • Giving kids the language to talk about how they’re feeling when they experience sensory overload

          • For a copy of Cindy’s Sensory Checklist” to see what behaviors fall under the sensory umbrella, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com
