Parenting Our Future episodes

  • Zen Parenting | POF166
There is no such thing as a perfect parent. Neither my guest or I would ever claim to be and in fact, we both agree that parenting can be looked at as a “practice” versus something we are striving to be “perfect” at.
My guest is Cathy Cassani Adams who is the author of “Zen Parenting - Caring for Ourselves and Our Children in an Unpredictable World.” We talk about the meaning of Zen Parenting and that, in the simplest of terms, means to have an awareness of reality; what’s really going on, and acceptance of what IS. I love it when Cathy talks about how two things can be true. For example, that we can love being with our kids and also miss working and being with adults. I think that knowing we can be both allows us to leave shame and judgement of ourselves at the door!
To Download Cathy’s handout, “Understand Ourselves, Our Kids, Our World,” you can download it for free from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com

  • Giving Kids an Emotional Toolkit | POF165

Emotional intelligence is more and more important, especially in parenting, especially in today’s day and age. EI, or EQ, for short, or SEL, social emotional learning, means: the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict.

It’s critical to teach our kids to develop their EQ…BUT it’s tricky because chances are we were never taught how to manage our own!

GOOD NEWS, it’s NEVER too late to grow and develop it. In fact, having kids provides a great opportunity to both learn and teach emotional intelligence.

My guest, Nadine Levitt, is an expert in teaching how to understand your child’s emotions and your own. The result is kids who feel safe, heard, supported and trust their parents. When your child feels this way, not only are they able to manage their emotions, you have a better relationship with them and parenting has less friction.

In this episode we talk about:

emotions, how we break it down for kids so that it is both simple and empowering.

How emotions come and we can’t control them

How to look at what our emotions are telling us

Emotions come to us in clusters, how can we direct them?

As parents, we can either be influenced by our kids' emotions OR we can be an influence so when your child has big feelings, accept that emotions are here and notice (without judgement) what you are saying to yourself about them.

Creating strategies - identify, acknowledge and redirect the better I understand my emotions

    • Solutions for Kids’ “BAD” Behavior in School | POF163

“I’ve seen way too many kids stressed at school, do something bad and think they were bad, it can stop today. Let’s start building up our kids. I’ll show you how, even when they do the worst thing or act in a horrible way.” ~ Dr. Karin Jakubowski

Dr. J, as her students call her, is my guest for this episode. She’s a highly accomplished educator and is helping teachers and parents understand what’s really driving “bad” behavior in our kids.

I never wanted to be the mom of “that kid” but I am. I’m the mom who has the kid that struggles in school, has gotten into fights, been rude to teachers, sent to the principal’s office, and more. I used to feel so ashamed and helpless. What I have come to embrace is that school isn’t a measure of our kids’ worth or intelligence. Sometimes school just isn’t the right environment for learning.

Karin brings a fresh perspective in solving behavior that’s seen as difficult by connecting before correcting behavior. She has seen transformations in behavior by simply connecting, listening, probing a little deeper, giving empathy and finding solutions.

To watch us on Youtube, subscribe to my channel, Parenting for Connection: https://www.youtube.com/c/ParentingforConnection

In this episode, we talk about how to talk to your kids when they have “bad” behavior, why behavior is never actually “bad”, and how to talk to teachers about your child and their behavior when it’s in question or becoming a “problem (to be solved!)”.

For an excerpt from Karin’s “Family Happiness Journal”, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com

      About Karin Jakubowski

Dr. Jakubowski is a well-respected international influencer on helping kids live happier, healthier lives. With a doctorate in Educational Leadership, and nearly 20 years of experience in education as a teacher, assistant principal and principal, she is highly regarded as an educational game-changer. As an empowerment coach, she provides a framework for parents who feel helpless when their child is experiencing challenging problems at school or home to experience the happy life they always dreamed of having through utilizing her revolutionary problem-solving approach.

    • The Sleep-Deprived Teen | POF162
Only 22% of teens get the amount of sleep they need to be rested which is 8-10 hours. You might be thinking it’s because they are on screens too long but that’s not the case. The main reasons why they aren’t getting enough sleep is because their circadian rhythm shifts in the teen years that makes them naturally want to go to sleep later and wake up earlier (it’s not just YOUR teen!!).
My guest, Lisa L. Lewis shares how sleep deprivation impacts teens in their ability to attain, retain, and retrieve information when they’re at school. There are other impacts to not getting enough sleep which impacts mental health.
Lisa and I talk about the changes taking place in the teen brain, how school start times, if too early, drastically impact our teen's ability to learn, and how we can make sleep a priority for them.

    • Planning Successful Vacations with Neurodiverse Kids | POF161

I know I'm not alone when I say my family has been on family vacations that have been more stressful than fun. When you have kids that have extra needs like anxiety, ADHD, mental health concerns and/or are on the spectrum, a family holiday can take turns you never expected. I’ve been miserable on holiday, and felt like the whole time away was a waste of time and money.

I’m thrilled to be talking to Dawn Barclay who is a travel writer and has written THE book to help parents like many of my listeners who are neurodiverse and have extra needs. Dawn’s book, “Travelling Different: Vacation Strategies for Parents of the Anxious, Inflexible and the Neurodiverse”, is a dream to help parents plan vacations that make everyone happy!

Dawn wrote this book because she wished something like this existed when her kids were younger. She shares wonderful advice about how to plan, prepare and set yourself and your child(ren) up for success for your next family vacation.

This is the episode where you get to learn about my family and I in an unexpected way, with the help of Master Hand Analyst, Brent Bruning. In part 2 of, The Power in Your Hands, Brent analyses my hands and the hands of my family based only on the lines and patterns he sees! It turns out that we have 4 RADICALLY different sets of hands which sets the stage for all of our different personalities!

He has shocking information for me about my husband who is a bit of a study in contradictions!

I learn what “fire hands” are, and which one of my boys Brent describes as “Evil Knievel”! (Gulp!)

For the best way to take in this episode, please go to my YouTube channel so you can see the visuals Brent shares: https://www.youtube.com/c/ParentingforConnection

Did you know that the lines on your hands don’t have anything to do with the way you fold them? In fact, some lines develop in utero before you can even bend your hand. The lines on your hands, including your fingerprints and size and shape of your hands, actually have everything to do with mirroring our nervous system at the place we are right now (and yes, lines can change). Our hands are tremendously sensitive and when we can learn what the lines mean, we can better understand ourselves and our KIDS!!

You can use the hands as a map to see your/your kids potential. You can see strengths, weaknesses, what are we/they are made to do and at what stage will they face challenges and dilemmas.

Brent compares the hands of well-known people and celebrities to demonstrate how the science of Palmistry works! We talk brain development, epigenetics, personality traits and more!

It’s one of the most fascinating conversations I’ve had on my show! Stay tuned for the next episode where Brent reviews my whole family’s hands. I learned a lot from Brent and I know you will too!

      • Toxic Marriages; How to Know if You’re in One | POF158

This episode is dedicated to listeners who are in toxic relationships with a spouse and co-parent. Maybe you aren’t sure if your partner is toxic, or maybe you think it’s just you. Thankfully I have an expert guest on to help you work it all out.

Heidi Brocke is a Toxic Relationship Awareness and Healing Specialist, who broke free of a 14 year emotionally abusive relationship. The label and diagnosis of Narcissism is prevalent in today’s zeitgeist and can often be misused, so we’re limiting the use of this word in favour of “toxic”.

Heidi stresses that if you are in a relationship with someone who is a bad parent, don’t expect that they’ll be a better parent when you aren’t together. If you have left the person, you have to remember your kids are still in it. What your kids need from you the most is to be their place for peace, stability and unconditional love because they won’t get that from the other parent.

In this episode, Dr. Heidi and I talk about:

What drives a toxic person: deep insecurity which drives the need for control, power (often kept behind closed doors) and attention and admiration (sought out externally).

Red flags that your spouse is toxic include: (remember driven by deep insecurity)

        • criticism and comparison
        • name calling
        • won’t take the blame, will deny mistreatment and don’t apologise (and if they do, it might be to gain control over you)
        • instilling fear and cutting you off from friends and family

        • As hard as it is, you have to take the high road and never cut down your spouse in front of your children. Again, their behaviour is driven by THEIR insecurity, it’s not about you, even if they put you down.

        • Helping Your Marriage Through Difficult Times | POF157

Maintaining your relationship while raising a family isn’t easy. Even the best relationships can be impacted. I know first-hand how good it feels to have a partnership with your spouse in parenting and in life, but my husband and I have also struggled.

My guest, Kimberly Beam Holmes, is here to help us through these ups and downs (using lots of acronyms! ;)). We talk about the steps that we (unknowingly) went through when we fell in love with our spouses, and how getting back to these basics can help us save a troubled marriage.

The formula for falling in love is four stages:

Stage 1 is all about attraction - physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual

Stage 2 is accepting your partner for who they are

Stage 3 is about your attachment to the other person

Stage 4 is your aspirations for the future. Our marriages are all about aspirations at the beginning but then we get into the “stay the course” stage and thats where life begins to pull us apart. Having shared relationship and family goals can be one of the keys to staying together.

We also talk about how pandemic life has put new and increased pressures on our relationships. It’s forced us to confront our issues instead of shoving them under the rug.

Kimberly shares so many insightful tips that you will walk away with some tangible steps to making your marriage better
