  • What Parents Need to Know: The Difference in Coaching Juniors & Coaching Collegians ft. Marcelo Ferreira

Welcome to Season 11, Episode 11, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, Lisa chats with Marcelo Ferreira, a former college coach (Texas Tech, Pepperdine) who is now running his own junior tennis development program in the Atlanta area.

After graduating from Georgia College & State University in 2006, Marcelo remained in Milledgeville, Ga. for a year to serve as the assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at his alma mater. He was a three-year letterwinner on the tennis team and earned Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll status every season. He later went on to earn his master’s degree in education, with a focus on human performance and sports management, from Texas Tech.

Once his time at Pepperdine was complete, Marcelo relocated to Atlanta where he began working with the area's junior players at Universal Tennis Academy (read more about Marcelo in this article). He then had the opportunity to take over the junior tennis program at the Windy Hill Athletic Club where he now runs his own high performance academy.

You will hear Marcelo speak about the differences - and similarities - of coaching at the collegiate level versus the junior level. There are significant differences both in terms of the role of the coach and the role of the parent which are crucial to understand if your child is looking to continue their tennis in college.

To reach Marcelo, email him at [email protected] and be sure to follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. He also shares valuable information on his social media, so don't miss out!

  • Talking High School Tennis ft. Kyle Williams & Tom Traub

Welcome to Season 11, Episode 7, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, Lisa chats with two high school tennis coaches from North Carolina: Kyle Williams and Tom Traub.

If you've been following ParentingAces for any amount of time, you know Lisa is a huge proponent of junior players getting involved with their high school teams. Having the opportunity to play for something bigger than yourself is an invaluable experience for all players, regardless of their goals and regardless of their level of play. Even though some high school tennis may not be at the level these kids are used to in terms of competition, it can still be a great experience and counter-balance to the pressures felt on the individual tournament court.

Kyle Williams and Tom Traub have been coaching at the high school level (Marvin Ridge High School) for many years and share their experiences working with both tournament-level players and more recreational players in the team atmosphere. Their program really starts with a feeder program at the middle school level, and they work closely with the middle school players and coaches to get them ready to train and compete once they get to high school.

You can reach Kyle at [email protected] and Tom at [email protected].

  • Junior Needs a New Bag! ft. Jack Oswald

Welcome to Season 11, Episode 6, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, Lisa chats with former touring pro, Jack Oswald, about his venture into entrepreneurship with Cancha Racquet Bag.

After nearly a decade of traveling the world on the men’s pro tennis circuit, Jack Oswald grew tired of experiencing the downfalls of traditional tennis bags: broken zips, loose stitching, uncomfortable straps and a ‘one-size fits all’ mentality that let him and others down time and time again. With a creative idea and entrepreneurial spirit, Oswald set out to create a uniquely adaptable, highly durable and customizable tennis and sports bag that could be used not only for avid and competitive tennis players but also for the outdoor adventurer.

The result of Jack’s labor of love, inspired by deep frustration? The Cancha Racquet Bag holds up to four racquets and was designed using a unique modular attachment system. Cancha, appropriately, means ‘court’ in Spanish but Jack adds, “Cancha also translates into activity and is an action word used to describe a go-getter. That’s the type of adjective that fits perfectly with the Cancha brand.”

“I wondered why no brands out there came up with a durable racquet bag that would see you through at least a whole season,” said Jack, 26, a resident of Great Britain. “I imagined a bag which, through its uniquely adaptable and customizable design, would be totally personal to each user and act as the perfect tool to help them achieve their goals.”

The design of the Cancha bag is unique for another reason; there are no large logos placed on the bag. “People can tell our bags from a mile away,” said Jack. “The design speaks for itself and we keep the logos to a minimum.”

Features of the Cancha bag include:

§ Durable and flexible material giving maximum protection from the elements

§ Accessory pockets for those little but important items

    § Removable shoulder straps

§ Lightweight, making it easy for juniors and adults alike

§ Modular system for maximum adaptability

§ Wet-dry bag accessory for soiled shirts and shorts

Born in Virginia, Jack spent 14 years in the United States and competed in national and international tournaments as a junior before his family moved to Europe. Fluent in three languages (French, Spanish and English), he holds a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Stirling (2021) and has also spent time as a hitting partner to ATP pros like Kyle Edmund and Aljaz Bedene.

“I am very interested in the lives of those grinding it out on the lower levels of the pro circuit,” Jack says. “My days traveling to the $10,000 Futures-level tournaments helped me learn what a player really needs from a great tennis bag.”

  • How Can We Attract - and Retain - More Children to Tennis ft. Danielle McNamara

Welcome to Season 11, Episode 5, of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week, Lisa chats with Danielle McNamara, former Head Women's Tennis Coach at Yale and current ITA Director of Coach Education, about what it's going to take to attract and retain more children to our sport.

Danielle McNamara was the women’s tennis head coach at Yale from 2006-14, and 2016-21. She was also the head coach at Texas from 2014-15. She guided Yale to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the first in program history in 2008. McNamara coached 27 All-Ivy singles players, 12 All-Ivy doubles teams, two Ivy League Rookie of the Year players, and the first Yale women’s tennis Ivy League Player of the Year. She played college tennis at the University of Michigan, where she became the first player in program history to participate in all three national championships; ITA All-Americans, ITA National Indoors, and NCAA Championships. Danielle served as team captain, and was named Big Ten Sportswoman of the Year.

Now, as the mother of two young children interested in sports, Danielle shares her thoughts on how tennis needs to pivot to compete in the world of Youth Sports Recruitment. Using her vast experience as both a player and coach, Danielle's approach makes so much sense and is something we'd love to see governing bodies around the world adopt.
