Governor Kate Brown announces new statewide measures to address rising COVID-19 hospitalizations
By Shannon McKone on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021
Union County Sheriff sends letter to Governor Brown
LA GRANDE — On Friday, August 13th, Union County Sheriff Cody Bowen released a letter directed to Oregon Governor Kate Brown in response to the mask and vaccine mandates recently enacted by the Oregon Governor.
Governor Kate Brown,
08/13/21
I write to you today in hopes of opening a dialogue and as a last resort to put you on notice that we the people of Union County, Oregon have had enough!
Enough of your overreaching mandates! Enough of your bullying threats. Enough of you dictating our state by fear. You have once again initiated what many consider to be an unconstitutional mandate requiring our children to wear a mask while in school. You have gone so far as to threaten our teacher’s livelihoods and their ability to provide for their family with fines and certification revocations if they don’t enforce your mandate. You have backed our school board members into a corner even though the east side of the state has expressed a desire to have local control over these situations.
Leaders listen to their constituents. You have continued in a long line of politicians who ignore the will of the people on the east side of the state. You sit on the opposite side of the state and dictate with a heavy hand. You ramble off your orders to Oregon Health Authority and Oregon Department of Education telling them to carry out your mindless orders or face the consequences of your threats. You are inflicting more damage to our children than any virus could ever do, and you hide behind the misrepresentation that you care for us all. You ma’am care nothing about our children or the people of Eastern Oregon.
As Sheriff of Union County I took an oath to uphold the Constitution and stand up and defend the people of this beautiful county we call home. We have the God given right to freedom and the God given right to choose what is best for ourselves and our children. Let us do so.
We will raise our children how we see fit. We will choose to wear a mask or choose not to wear a mask. We will choose to get vaccinated or choose not to get vaccinated. Your mindless dictates will no longer be tolerated.
Sheriff
Cody Bowen

Suffice it to say, this issue continues to be highly controversial, especially in regards to student health.
The most important data point from the CDC is that since the pandemic has started through July 2021, there have been NO deaths in the Alaska age group under 17 years. Thus, it would seem as if it is more important to protect the ASD staff as students have an extremely low chance of contracting the virus. And if a student gets the virus, the mortality rate is zero if no preexisting conditions.
Doctor Marty Makary and his research team at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine analyzed childhood Covid cases and found a mortality rate of ZERO among kids with no preexisting condition. He noted that the CDC states that 335 kids under age 18 have died with a Covid diagnosis in their record. BUT the CDC did not indicate if that virus was incidental or causal. So, his team studied 48,000 kids under age 18 who were diagnosed with Covid. They found a mortality rate of ZERO among those without a preexisting condition.
Regarding transmission of Covid by students to adults, Dr Danny Benjamin, a pediatric infectious disease and epidemiologist at Duke University, studied 11 North Carolina school districts, including 90,000 students/staff. Their conclusion: no evidence of student-to-adult transmission of Covid. Bottom line—there is virtually no child-to-adult transmission during in-person schooling. So, to mask students has no effect on the transmission to adult staff.
What should our response be? As an organization and as individuals? We support the right of parents to make health decisions for their children. Masks should be optional.
In addition, PRIE recognizes the right of local school boards to make policy decisions which reflect the community. Although Superintendents may encourage members to comply with requests from the Department of Education, School Board Members legally have control of school policies. They are often reminded at Association meetings they have the power to create and change policy.
There have been some very disturbing responses by state and local officials regarding health related mandates including mandatory masking and vaccines.

New Business Item 49 (Referred to the Appropriate Committee)
The NEA will convene a task force to collect and analyze data and metrics about environmental pollution and its impact on America’s students and educational communities….
Data collection will include, but is not limited to, the following:
1. Data outlining the impact of environmental pollution on students in impoverished communities and/or Indigenous communities of color.
2. Data outlining the long-term health conditions suffered by communities impacted by environmental pollution (i.e., Flint, Michigan).
3. Data outlining the dollars spent on special education programs and supports for students who have been impacted as a result of environmental pollution.
4. A comparative analysis of impacted communities and neighboring non-impacted affluent communities in the same geographic region.
New Business Item 51 (Referred to the Appropriate Committee)
NEA will:
1. Use existing digital communication tools to educate members and the general public about the history, culture, and struggles of Palestinians, including the detention and abuse of children in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
2. Use existing digital communication to publish an article in NEA Today recognizing the work done by our members fighting for the rights of Palestinian children and families.
3. Publicly advocate for Palestinian children to have access to a quality education while supporting their right to a safe and just future in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international standards.
4. Highlight the need for state and local affiliates to honor and protect the rights of members advocating for Palestinian human rights.
New Business Item 54 (Referred to the Appropriate Committee)
The National Education Association from this point forward will no longer hold its Representative Assemblies or any of its national conferences in any state that openly supports voter suppression, including states that revoke voting rights for people who are convicted of felonies who have completed their sentence.
New Business Item 58 (Referred to the Appropriate Committee)
NEA will generate a “Greenwood and Beyond” initiative. The goal is to make sure all students learn what happened not just in Tulsa, but in several Black townships during “The Red Summer” of 1921. Furthermore, NEA will work with historians and educators to create an online resource database that will store curriculum for “Greenwood and Beyond.” This database will provide educators with information that can be used to educate students in the factual account of what happened during that period.
New Business Item 64 (Referred to the Appropriate Committee)
The NEA will educate its members, using existing electronic media, about the positive effects that having a tax-supported, single-payer health care plan for all residents of the United States, its territories, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico would have on reducing the U.S. health care gap.

Resource Article about the NEA
...In other words, it is possible that up to $90.5 million (the sum of the latter two categories of expenditures) was earmarked for leftist political candidates, organizations, and causes. Among these expenditures were the following:
“What wasn’t clear before is how much of a part the teachers unions play in the wider liberal movement and the Democratic Party,” said Michael Antonucci of the Education Intelligence Agency, a California-based watchdog group. “They’re like some philanthropic organization that passes out grant money to interest groups.”

PARENTS’ RIGHTS IN EDUCATION
We represent millions of voices standing up for families, united for natural parents’ rights in the K-12 education system.
Local control,…
We reject any indoctrination of school children with extreme pedagogy.
We support the proper role of K-12 academic education, focused on core skills, and preparing students for success. We reject controversial sexualization and racist doctrine.
We reject current practice by public school staff facilitating mental health counseling, medical treatment and procedures without parent knowledge, circumventing the relationship between parents and children.
We are here to provide parents tools, so they can stand against those stealing their rights. Stand with us!
