When two people suffering from an illness or probably an addiction are prayed for, one may walk away delivered, while the other may not. When this happens, the one who was not delivered may feel neglected. Since God is no respecter of persons, what could account for such disparity? The answer is not just a simplistic “lack of faith”. We are often too strong for God: full of our own strength, confidence and wisdom. What we fail to recognise though, is that our exalted self stands against the wisdom of God. We cannot dwell with God or be used by Him when we are full of ourselves. 

This is why afflictions are necessary. We must be totally rid of ourselves, until the Lord grants us a contrite and humble spirit: for such is the state of those to whom the Lord is near.

The willingness and ability of God to help us is not in question. Our eagerness for solutions also seems to be in place. We have been called to the path of service. Walking this path requires total submission to the Will of God. It is important that we see ourselves as servants who respond only to the Will of the Master. 

Fueled by our love for the Lord, we willingly constrain ourselves to a disciplined spiritual life, so that we can serve His will. We are motivated to take certain steps, no matter the cost, because we are keen on pleasing Him alone.

The Word of God is not given in vain. In it, we find all we need for life and godliness. It is a full package of blessings. If we fail to recognize this, and do not give the Word its rightful place in our lives, it is because we are preoccupied with several material distractions. The Word of God must reign in the centre of our lives. It must be our only focus and option for life.

The Christian life is the pursuit of eternal life, attainable only by spiritual encounters. This is because the origin of eternal life is not earthly, but heavenly. Thus, heaven must be opened unto a man for eternal life to flow to him/her. Without this eternal life, man is handicapped, helpless and clueless in life. What is the nature of this eternal life? How is one prepared to be opened up for it?

In our every attempt to do good, we must be aware that evil will be present with us. This is a law. Knowing this should make us more careful when we set out to work for God.
