Many Christians are under the illusion that they can passively receive the promise of the Holy Spirit. God flows to the whole of His creation on a subconscious level to constitute their existence. This does not require their cooperation or the involvement of their “will”. However, for God to dwell in our will for us to receive His great treasures, we must actively engage our will and understanding. The former does not make one alive, but the latter does.

A lot of gadgets get underutilised, especially in the hands of one who lacks understanding of their full capabilities. In the same vein, our natural mind gets underutilised by the carnal mind. It gets underutilised so much that we are unable to fathom its full potential. As a result, we lead a debased life, being subject to the beggarly elements of this world. However, in the hands of the Holy Spirit, the full potential of our mind is realised.

This spiritual illumination of truth is what Jesus referred to as the comforter (helper), who is to abide with us forever. This is our destiny. But many are discouraged from waging war against the carnal mind and easily give up on the exceeding riches of the Lord’s glory. However, Jesus gives emphatic assurance of victory in many parts of scripture.

The carnal mind is called “flesh” in the scriptures because, it prioritises the material as its goal. Before we become spiritual, we are ruled by the carnal mind through the wisdom of this world. Consequently, those who are ruled by the carnal mind despise the Divine wisdom and, therefore, cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. Hence, the need for the carnal mind to be done away with. Jesus called the carnal mind, the strong man who must be bound so that the Kingdom of God can come to us (i.e., to be filled with the Spirit).

In the message, “Be Filled With The Spirit: The Strong Man”, Pastor Jeffrey Walter outlines the indicators of the rulership of the carnal mind and how it deprives us of being filled with the Spirit. Furthermore, he shows how the carnal mind can be resisted, so that the spiritual mind can be expressed in our natural mind.

To be spiritual, our natural mind (the part in touch with earthly impulses) must first be developed, so that truth can be illustrated to us. Yet, it is our submission to the truths that opens our spiritual mind, which serves as the point of inception of Divine Wisdom. The Divine intelligence, which is able to reach us by the opening of the spiritual mind, then shines through the natural truths in our natural mind, thereby bringing us to the place of faith. However, the carnal mind, which is completely opposite to the Divine wisdom, hijacks the natural mind and rules it with the wisdom of this world.

He further describes how the carnal mind is formed, uncovering the nature of its rulership in blocking our access to the Spirit.

Mastery in spiritual things, the divine blessing, is not attained on a silver platter. This is because there are things present with us that are not compatible with mastery. Hence, there ought to be a shift in the one who strives for mastery. Everyone can be open to isolated supernatural encounters, but to have a sustained supernatural presence, you must pay great prices. The greater the mastery, the more gruesome the sacrifice required.

The spiritual journey can be likened to one who is making a transition from one civilization to another. Since each civilization is governed by a set of wisdom, the one who will migrate from the worldly civilization to the heavenly civilization, i.e., the civilization of the Lord’s new church, must do so by knowledge. This is necessary because, we are coming from a place where we think materially about life to a place where we think spiritually about life. To successfully make the transition, we must give ourselves to devour the knowledge that constitutes the spiritual civilization. For without the awareness of the wisdom that governs this new civilisation, no one can be admitted into it.

And that, if we will be part of the Lord’s new Church, we must be devourers of the knowledge that pertains to this new civilization. The Lord commands us to Love Him with all our hearts, soul, mind and strength. If only we can surrender our will to do this, we will enter into divine intelligence, thereby becoming vessels for God to operate through. Yet, there are inadequacies with us that make it difficult to attain such mastery. Hence, the need for us to strive. One key resource we need to strive to utilise in attaining the high price is TIME – we give up the things we love by giving up the time we commit to such things.
