Day 2: Broken Promises Still Speak

Your word matters. A handshake. A vow. A promise made to a friend, a spouse, a child. Those things carry weight whether you want them to or not. They carry weight long after you have moved on.
The covenant with the Gibeonites in Joshua 9 was not a technicality. It was a promise made before God. Saul broke it, and the consequences were real. Generations later a whole nation paid. The promise did not expire because time passed. Oaths do not decay.
You have made commitments you have not kept. Marriage vows you stopped honoring. Promises to your kids that you let slip. A word given to a friend that you never followed through on. You minimize those things. God does not. He calls them what they are.
Here is the good news. The same God who holds you accountable for a broken promise gives you a way forward. He does not surface your failures to shame you. He surfaces them so you can deal with them, make it right where you can, and keep your word going forward. Honesty costs you something. Pay it.

Day 1: You Can’t Outrun Your Past

You have tried to move on from something you knew was wrong. You told yourself time would handle it. You told yourself it was not that big a deal. You knew better. You always did. Sin does not fade into the background. Sin does not decay. Sin waits. And sin has a voice.In 2 Samuel 21, Israel starves through three years of famine. David finally asks God why. The answer is a broken covenant made generations before he was born. God had not forgotten. One man’s faithlessness reached across decades and cost an entire nation its bread.That is hard. It is also freedom. If God takes sin that seriously, then He takes your confession that seriously too. He is not indifferent. He is not looking away. He is not pretending. He sees all of it, and He cares enough to deal with it instead of ignoring it.Stop running. Stop burying what needs to come into the light. You are not hiding it from God anyway. God is not waiting to condemn you. He is waiting to meet you with mercy. But mercy starts with honesty. Name it. Own it. Bring it to Him.

Day 5: You Have the Mind of Christ. Use It.

Here is one of the most remarkable truths in all of Scripture. If you follow Jesus Christ, you have been given the mind of Christ. Not a portion of it. Not a glimpse of it. First Corinthians 2:16 says it plainly.
That means you are not stuck. You are not condemned to cycle through jealousy, division, and passivity forever. You have access to a way of thinking that is higher than your emotions, wiser than your grievances, and stronger than your worst moments.
The mind of Christ seeks unity over division. It pursues the glory of God over your own glory. It looks for solutions instead of problems. It moves toward people instead of away from them. And it is yours right now, not because you earned it, but because Jesus gave it to you when you put your faith in Him.
Jealousy will still knock. Grievances will still feel real. Decisions will still feel hard. But you do not have to answer those things with your old mind. Pause, pray, and ask: what would the mind of Christ lead me to do here?
You are not who you used to be. Walk in that truth today. The same Christ who rose from the grave lives in you, and He is more than enough for whatever you are facing.

Day 4: Stop Waiting. Start Deciding.
Devotional
Sometimes the most dangerous thing you do is nothing at all.
When jealousy takes root, it paralyzes you. You see what others have, you stew in what you feel you lack, and you wait. You wait for circumstances to change, for someone else to fix it, for the perfect moment that never comes. Meanwhile life keeps moving and the division grows deeper.
The wise woman of Abel of Beth Maacah did not wait. When Joab’s army surrounded her city, she did not panic or point fingers. She went to Joab, appealed to reason, offered terms of peace, and ended the crisis. She acted. And her city was saved.
James 4:17 is blunt about this. Knowing the right thing and failing to do it is sin. Most of you already know what you need to do. You know the conversation you need to have, the apology you need to offer, the pattern you need to break. The problem is not knowledge. It is the willingness to act.
God has not called you to a life of passive waiting. He has called you to walk in wisdom, and wisdom requires movement. The wrong decision made in faith is almost always better than no decision made in fear. Take the step. Trust God with the outcome. He is faithful to guide the person who is willing to move.

Day 3: Jealousy Divides. Christ Unites.

Jealousy is rarely a private struggle. It almost always finds a way out, and when it does, it leaves damage behind.
In 2 Samuel 20, the jealousy of the men of Israel did not stay in their hearts. It spilled out, and a man named Sheba gave it a rallying cry. He had no plan, no vision, no solution. He only had a grievance. And that was enough to fracture a kingdom.
Paul saw the same pattern in the church at Corinth. People divided over loyalty to different leaders, and he called it out plainly. Jealousy was the root. Division was the fruit. Satan has run this playbook from the beginning, because division was his first sin. He was jealous of God, and that jealousy shattered everything.
Christ came to do the opposite. Ephesians 2:14 says He Himself is our peace, the One who has broken down the dividing wall of hostility. He does not just make peace. He is peace.
If you are in a relationship, a church, or a community where jealousy is creating cracks, you have a choice. Feed the division, or pursue the unity that Christ died to make possible. Wisdom looks for solutions. Jealousy looks for problems. Today, choose wisdom.

Jesus, You are our peace. Where jealousy has built walls in my relationships, give me the courage and the wisdom to be someone who tears them down instead of adding to them. Amen.

Day 2: Jealousy Puts You on the Wrong Throne

Jealousy is not really about what someone else has. It is about what you believe you deserve. When you envy, you are quietly putting yourself on the throne and demanding that life arrange itself around your expectations.
That is a heavy seat. And it was never meant for you.
God calls Himself jealous in Exodus 34, but His jealousy is nothing like yours. His is the righteous response of a God whose people chase false gods instead of the One who loves them perfectly. Your jealousy is you chasing the throne. James 3 does not soften it. He calls it earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. Proverbs 27 says it is more destructive than wrath or anger.
When you are jealous of someone, you are not just fighting a bad feeling. You are worshiping yourself. You are saying your judgment about what you deserve matters more than God’s provision for your life.
Here is the good news. Jesus stepped off the throne of heaven and came down so you would not have to claw your way up to one. He already secured everything you truly need. Release the grip. Step down. There is far more peace in trusting His plan than in demanding your own.

2 Samuel, Week 23

Day 1: The Sin You Think Is Justified

You are good at defending yourself. Jealousy creeps in, and there is always a voice ready with an explanation. “My situation is different. I have a good reason. Anyone would feel this way.” So you hold onto it, convinced that this time the envy is earned.
But that voice is not God. It is your own heart, and the Bible says the heart is deceitful above all things. The men of Israel in 2 Samuel 19 were convinced their jealousy of Judah was justified. They thought they had real grievances. But their assumptions were half-truths and wounded pride. And when a worthless man named Sheba blew a trumpet and gave their anger a voice, ten tribes walked away from their king.
Jealousy does not need a good reason. It only needs an audience.
God is not asking you to pretend the feeling is not there. He is asking you to be honest about what it actually is. Name the jealousy instead of defending it. That is the first step toward freedom. You are not uniquely wronged. You are human, and Christ came to save humans exactly like you.
There is grace waiting on the other side of honesty. Stop defending a sin that is quietly costing you more than you realize.

2 Samuel, Week 22

Day 5: Serve for the Joy, Not the Reward
Devotional
Barzillai had every reason to expect a payout. He had bankrolled David through the rebellion at enormous personal cost. So when David offers him a place of honor at the palace, Barzillai turns it down. He had not served for the reward. He served out of loyalty to his king.
That posture is rare. Be honest, most of us keep a quiet ledger. We serve, we give, we show up, and in the back of our minds we are tallying what we are owed for it. A transactional deal with God will always leave you disappointed, because God is not a vending machine.
Jesus flips the whole thing in Matthew 25:21. The reward is not comfort. It is not recognition. It is not an easier life. The reward is the joy of Christ Himself. If He is what you are chasing, you already have more than enough to give freely, forgive freely, and serve without keeping score.
This is the posture that changes everything. When Christ is your treasure, no circumstance can touch your reward. You are free to give without calculating the return. Free to forgive without demanding the apology. Free to lead without needing the credit. That is the life He is calling you into, and it beats anything the world could ever hand you back.

2 Samuel, Week 22

Day 4: Reject the Voice of Vengeance
Devotional
Every time David stepped toward restoration, a voice pushed back. Shimei comes for mercy, and Abishai is right there telling David to execute him. Vengeance is rarely subtle. It sounds reasonable. It even sounds just. And it drags you somewhere destructive every single time.
You have heard that voice. After the betrayal. After the friendship blew up. After a wound that still hasn’t closed. It tells you they deserve to suffer. It tells you justice demands you hit back. That voice is never once leading you somewhere good.
Paul says it flat out in Romans 12:19. Vengeance is not yours to carry. God saw exactly what was done to you. He is just, and He can handle what you never could. Your job is not to repay. Your job is to release.
This is not pretending the hurt never happened. It is refusing to let that hurt call your next move. David could have let bitterness run his whole reign. He chose grace instead, and it opened doors retaliation never would have. Same goes for you. Drop the need to get even. There is something far bigger waiting on the other side of letting go.

2 Samuel, Week 22

Day 3: The Freedom of Forgiveness
Devotional
Shimei had publicly cursed David during the lowest moment of his life. Now he comes crawling back for mercy, and David’s advisors want blood. The call for vengeance was loud. David shut it down. He forgave the man instead, and in that one move he started winning back an entire tribe.
Forgiveness is almost never the easy road. It feels like letting the guilty walk. But David saw it clearly: what vengeance tears down, forgiveness can rebuild. Rage narrows you. Revenge shrinks your world down to the offense. Forgiveness opens it back up.
Paul makes the reason dead clear in Ephesians 4:32. You do not forgive because the other person earned it. You forgive because you already got what you never earned. That is the gospel, and it is the foundation. Christ forgave you at your absolute worst. That changes everything about the offenses you keep clutching.
This is freeing news. You do not have to keep hauling around what someone did to you. You do not have to guard yourself with bitterness. You were forgiven a debt you could never repay, and that grace is more than enough to hand to the people who hurt you. Forgiveness is not weakness. It is what spills out of a heart that has actually met the grace of God.
