Day 2: God Was Already Working

Here is something that should stop you cold: God was already preparing the answer to David's prayer before David ever prayed it.

Years before David fled Jerusalem, God had placed Hushai in his court. God had been building loyalty in Hushai's heart. When David prayed for God to turn Ahithophel's counsel into foolishness, the answer was already moving. David did not inform God of a problem. God had been orchestrating the solution long before the crisis hit.

That truth should change the way you pray today.

You may be waiting on God, wondering if He has forgotten you or if your prayers are even reaching Him. God is not scrambling to catch up. He is not surprised by your situation. He has been working in ways you cannot see, preparing answers to prayers you have not even prayed yet.

Prayer is not a technique that produces results. It is communion with a God who is already at work. You are not informing Him. You are joining Him in what He is already doing.

That is not a reason to pray less. It is every reason to pray more. Come to Him with confidence, knowing the God you are speaking to has already been moving on your behalf.

Day 1: Turn to God First

When everything falls apart, where do you turn first? You grab your phone. You call a friend. You try to think your way out. Prayer is the last thing you try, after everything else has already failed.
David was in one of the worst moments of his life. His own son had staged a coup. His most trusted advisor had betrayed him. He had every reason to panic, to strategize, to run. He prayed instead. One specific, desperate prayer asking God to act.
That is not a small thing. That is a man who understood what most of us are still learning: the presence of God is not a backup plan. It is the starting point.
Philippians 4:6 does not tell you to bring your requests to God once you have exhausted every other option. It says in everything, with thanksgiving, bring them to God. Every situation. Every fear. Every crisis. Before the strategy session. Before the phone call. Before the panic.
You are not bothering God when you come to Him first. You are doing exactly what He made you to do. He is not waiting for you to figure it out on your own. He is waiting for you to come to Him.
Whatever you are carrying today, bring it to Him now. Not later. Now.

Day 5: The Cross Changes Everything

Every accusation you have ever faced, every failure you carry, every curse spoken over your life — Jesus absorbed all of it on the cross. That is not a metaphor. It is the foundation of the Christian life.
Galatians 3:13 tells us that Christ became a curse for us so the blessing could be ours. He did not defend Himself against false charges because He was willingly taking on the weight of every true charge that could ever be brought against us. The cross is where every accusation against you has already been answered.
This means you do not have to be defined by your worst moments. You do not have to carry the weight of what others have said about you. You are not what your failures say you are. You are what Christ says you are, and He has already paid for every sin and silenced every legitimate accusation.
When criticism comes, ask two questions. Is there truth here I need to deal with? And has Christ already absorbed this and turned it into blessing? For everyone who trusts in Jesus, the answer to that second question is always yes. You are deeply flawed, and you are deeply loved. Both are true, and the cross holds them together.

Day 4: When the Curse Becomes a Blessing

David said something remarkable while Shimei cursed him. He told his men to leave Shimei alone, because perhaps God would see his affliction and turn the curse into a blessing. That is an extraordinary statement from a man living through one of the worst days of his life.
David was not being passive. He was not pretending the pain did not hurt. He was choosing to believe that God was still sovereign over his suffering, and that even the worst moments could be redeemed.
That kind of faith does not come easy. It demands that you loosen your grip on the outcome and trust that God is working in ways you cannot yet see. Romans 8:28 is not a promise that everything will feel good. It is a promise that God is working all things together for good for those who love Him. That includes the painful things, the unfair things, and the things that feel like pure loss.
You may be in a season right now that feels more like a curse than a blessing. Do not give up. God has a long history of taking the very things meant to harm His people and turning them into something that glorifies Him. Trust Him with what you cannot yet understand.

Day 3: Nothing Is Hidden From Him

One of the most painful parts of being falsely accused is the feeling that nobody knows the real truth. People hear one version of the story. Your reputation takes a hit. And you are left wondering whether the record will ever be set straight.
David knew that feeling. Shimei’s accusations were public and humiliating. Some of it was rooted in real failures in David’s past, but much of it was simply wrong. David could not control what people believed about him in that moment. What he could do was trust that God saw everything clearly.
That is no small comfort. It is a profound one. Nothing about your life is hidden from God. He sees the full story, the context, the motives, and the truth. He is not swayed by the loudest voice or the slickest argument. He knows you completely.
When you are misunderstood or falsely accused, you do not have to wear yourself out managing every person’s perception of you. Rest in this: the One whose opinion matters most already knows the truth. He sees you, and He has not turned away.

Day 2: The Courage to Hear Hard Things

Nobody enjoys criticism. Our first instinct is to defend ourselves, explain our actions, or write off the person doing the criticizing. But the most courageous thing you can do is shut up and listen.
When Shimei cursed David in the street, throwing stones and calling him a man of blood, David’s men wanted to silence him on the spot. David said no. He did not agree with Shimei. He did not crumble under the words. But he did not slam the door either. He was willing to sit in the discomfort long enough to ask whether God might be speaking through it.
That kind of humility is rare. It demands you hold two things at once: a secure enough sense of who you are that criticism does not destroy you, and an honest enough view of yourself that you do not assume you are above correction.
Pride slams the door on criticism. Humility cracks it open and lets the light in. And sometimes that light exposes something worth dealing with. Your willingness to receive correction is tied directly to your capacity to grow. Do not let pride rob you of the growth God has prepared for you.

Day 1: When Lies Find the Right Moment

Ever made a snap decision you regretted, simply because you were exhausted and someone told you exactly what you wanted to hear? That is no accident. Lies are strategic. They do not show up when you are rested, clear-headed, and surrounded by people you trust. They show up when you are worn down, isolated, and already leaning toward a conclusion.
David was fleeing his own son. He was humiliated, tired, and grieving. Then Ziba showed up with food, supplies, and a story about Mephibosheth. David swallowed it whole. He did not seek the other side. He did not stop to ask whether the story was complete. He was too tired to discern, and that weariness cost him.
This is not just an old story. It is a warning aimed straight at you. The lie that wrecks your closest relationships will not arrive on your best day. It will arrive when you are already tempted to believe the worst about someone you love.
Guard your heart in those moments. Slow down before you react. Ask God for clarity before you make a decision you cannot take back. He is faithful to give wisdom to those who ask, and He knows the full story even when you only have one side.

Day 5: Grace to Face the Truth

Set David’s failure next to Jesus Christ and the contrast is everything. Where David avoided, Jesus engaged. Where David gave half-measures, Jesus gave everything. Where David waited, Jesus acted. When you gave your life to Christ, you did not just get forgiveness. You got the grace and the strength to face the truth about yourself and take responsibility for your life. The dysfunction in your relationships, the patterns you keep repeating, the leadership you keep dodging, none of it disappears by ignoring it. But in Christ you have everything you need to meet it head-on. Grace is not opposed to effort. Grace frees you to act. You do not have to be perfect to lead well. You do not need every answer to take the first step. You do not have to feel ready to do what is right. You need the grace that is already yours in Jesus and the courage to use the wisdom He has given you. Your life does not have to be defined by avoidance and dysfunction. Through Christ you can be the leader, the reconciler, the man God called you to be. The question is not whether you are able. It is whether you are willing.

2 Samuel, Week 18

Day 4: Leadership Can’t Wait
Devotional
David’s avoidance created a vacuum, and a vacuum never stays empty. While David refused to lead his own family through the crisis, Absalom stepped up and stole the hearts of Israel. The people wanted leadership, and when the rightful leader would not lead, they followed the man who would. This is true everywhere. In your home, your job, your church, somebody is going to lead. If you will not step up and lead in a godly way, someone else will fill that space, and you may not like who it is. Leadership is not a title and it is not perfection. It is taking responsibility, making the hard call, and carrying people through hard seasons. Maybe you have been ducking a role because you do not feel qualified or you are scared of getting it wrong. Hear this: your avoidance is not protecting anybody. It is making room for dysfunction to grow. Jesus never avoided leadership, not even when it meant the cross. He led through the worst dysfunction of all, your sin, and gave us the model of sacrificial leadership. The people around you need you to step up, not back.

God, You have called me to lead in real places with real people. I will not hide behind feeling unqualified. Give me the courage to step into it and the wisdom to lead like Christ, who led me all the way to the cross.

Day 3: Taking the First Step

The worst part of David and Absalom’s story is not the killing. It is the five years of silence that came after. Both men sat there waiting for the other one to move first. Pride kept them apart while the relationship rotted. How many of your relationships are stuck in that exact deadlock? You are waiting for an apology that is not coming. You are waiting for the other person to break first. Reconciliation does not happen by waiting. It never has. It happens when someone chooses humility over pride and love over being right. God did not wait for you to come around. While you were still His enemy, Christ died for you. He took the first step when you deserved nothing but judgment. If the God of the universe humbled Himself to come after you, you can take the first step toward the person who hurt you. That does not mean you are admitting fault or excusing what they did. It means you are acting like Jesus. Move first. Love first. Forgive first.
