Christmas Calls You to Mission
Day 2:
Two Responses to Jesus
Devotional
The wise men’s arrival in Jerusalem created quite a stir. While these foreign visitors were filled with joy at the prospect of meeting the newborn King, Herod and all of Jerusalem were troubled. This stark contrast reveals a timeless truth: Jesus brings joy to those who seek Him and distress to those who resist Him. Herod’s reaction wasn’t really about a baby—it was about control. Jesus represented a threat to his authority, his plans, his sovereignty over his own life. The religious leaders knew exactly where the Messiah would be born, yet they didn’t join the search. Knowledge without surrender leads nowhere. Meanwhile, the wise men, despite their limited understanding, responded with worship and costly gifts. This same dynamic plays out today. When we encounter Jesus, we face a choice: Will we surrender control of our lives to Him, or will we resist because it threatens our autonomy? Faith in Jesus does require giving up sovereignty over our lives, but what we gain is infinitely greater than what we lose. The wise men left their encounter transformed, while Herod remained trapped in his fear and anger. The beautiful irony is that those who seem most opposed to the gospel often need it most desperately. Their resistance might actually be evidence of the Holy Spirit’s conviction at work in their hearts.
Bible Verse
The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. - John 1:9-11
Reflection Question
In what areas of your life are you still holding onto control instead of fully surrendering to Jesus as King?
Quote
“For the believer, the news of Jesus Christ is joyous. For the unbeliever, it’s troubling.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I confess that sometimes I want You as Savior but struggle with You as King. Help me to surrender every area of my life to Your loving authority. Transform my heart to find joy in Your lordship rather than fear. Amen.
