In honor of Pat's birthday week, Jon agreed to take on three things that Pat's been wanting him to check out. What do a 70s film noir, a collaborative mixtape between two titans of modern hip-hip, and a 90s heist romance movie have in common? Can Pat stick the landings in his segues between the three topics? Will Jon resist the temptation to correct Pat just because it's his birthday?

They discuss some exciting/perplexing categories, reexamine the state of film in 2020, and—true to form—Jon takes it all way too seriously. Discourse! Even if you don't know what that word means (Pat doesn't, Jon pretends to), you probably engage in it, and that's what P and J are here to talk about. The boys are joined by writer/podcaster Spencer Rider to discuss his incredible article "Reject Discourse, Revitalize Cinema" in which he outlines how film discourse tends to function more as "extensions of fashion and politics" than as conversation about the movie itself. In this week's episode, Spencer discusses his motivations for writing the article, Pat travels back to 2006 and relives his obsession with Borat, and Jon complains about Twitter without ever considering logging off.

You knew it was coming, dear listener! This week, the boys tackle Jon's holy grail of music genres: emo music. Is this all a ploy on Pat's end to ensure that the topic never gets brought up again on the podcast? Only time will tell! They discuss common misconceptions regarding what is/isn't truly emo (the terms "mall emo" and "twinkle daddies" are discussed at length), Jon recounts his personal experiences and encounters with the genre's recent revival, and Pat is given the impossible task of differentiating between emo lyrics and lines from Jon's poetry. Plus, Pat and Jon listen to some killer emo classics, and they outline their plans for a certain upcoming season currently being planned by a son of Tom Hanks.
