  • My Biggest Takeaways from Rachel Jonat's 'Do Less' book. Minimalism.

    This post has affiliate links.

I'm actually reading books now. Something I hadn't done since high school. I heard Brian Tracy YouTube video saying 'reading is exercising the brain'. That motivated me to begin reading more often.

It began the summer of 2015 when I found Tony Robbins Unlimited Power book while I was out sourcing for items to resell on eBay and Amazon. I was around when he had those 30 minute infomercials during the 90s. Those sold me hook, line and sinker! I purchased his Awaken the Giant Within book around the time but never finished it. It took me about 6 months to finish the Unlimited Power book and it was fantastic. I've read about 4 books now (all small/slim books so far) and I'm currently reading the Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann.

But before that I finished reading Rachel Jonat's Do Less. A Minimalist Guide To a Simplified, Organized, Happy Life. These were my biggest takeaways from the book. Here are quotes from the book with page numbers.

    • 'The truth is, having everything has never made anyone happy.' pg. 108.

    • 'If you're not happy with your life before you spend a lot of money on your dream kitchen with the subway tiles and granite countertops, you probably won't be happy after. It sounds cliche, but spending money and buying things doesn't bring happiness. But having what you want-what you truly need for wellness and the time and focus to do things that really matter to you-that is the recipe for a contented life.' pgs 108-109.

    • 'Remember what's free. Sometimes it is hard to see all the fun that can be had with out spending a dime. As you scale back spending, make a list of the no-cost fun in your life.' pg 128.

    • 'How to be rich without a lot of money. A key tenet to minimalism is to maximize what you do have for the greatest effect. If you have your health, great friends, and burning creative aspirations, use them as your barometer of wealth instead of money.' pg 130.

    • 'It's so tempting to think more is better when in fact more complicates your life' pg 161.

I want to implement these points into my life right away.

This book gives many practical steps to live a minimalist lifestyle. If your new to minimalism this book is a great first step. Find out more about Rachel Jonat on her blog here.

  • My Interview of Fredlox from the Dancin' Squad

In this episode I interview the 2nd of my two, main, Dancehall mentors. Fredlox of the Dancin' Squad.

Listen to us talk about his upbringing in Paris. His early fascination with the hip hop culture. We discuss his motivations in coming to the U.S. without knowing any English. His first memorable Dancehall experience in a Bronx nightclub.

Rubbing shoulders, dancing alongside, battling such dancers as Bogle, Tic and Tac, Bruk Up, Bingi, and Wattah Boots, to name a few.

An inspirational and heartfelt interview. You can contact Fredlox on Instagram here.

  • Episode#8 Independence Day Resurgence Movie Review with Spoilers

This post does have an affiliate links.

The sequel to 1996's Independence Day was a lot of dumb fun!     To find out more about the original movie click here for the Wikipedia page.   My pros and cons with the film:

    Pros

    • Fun movie, I laughed and enjoyed the movie.
    • Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Maika Monroe (from 'It Follows'), Travis Tope (from Boardwalk Empire season 5) were the standouts in the film.
    • Amazing special effects, especially the look of the aliens.   I feel an improvement from the first film.   Also the combination of the new human/alien technology was very sleek.
    • Brent Spiner stole the movie for me.   Very entertaining and funny whenever he showed up on screen.
    • Tighter and better pace than the first film.

    Cons

    • Bill Pullman death wish, he wanted to be die/be killed/sacrificed in almost every scene he was in.
    • Replaceable main characters.   Hiller's son, Liam Hemsworth, Angelababy, had no appeal or charisma and could've been played by anyone.
    • Revenge Yell!!!   Every time one of the main/side character's friend(s)/family was hurt or killed, they got their vengeance by yelling and shooting aplenty...and it worked!
    • The 'Floyd' character was brutal.    To go from this pencil necked geek to 'warrior' by the time the film is done wasn't a pleasant thing to sit through.
    • Characters emotional roller coaster...one second their grieving a loved one's death the next their smiling and celebrating....yay!   We beat the aliens but my best friend is dead!
    • This movie is filled with ridiculousness that will make you groan and laugh.

But this is the exact reason why I enjoyed this movie.   My final score is a 7/10.   Popcorn-dumb movie to the fullest.

Shout out to my boys Jason G. and Gunnie for helping me out with this review.

  • Interview of one of my Dancehall Mentors Mr. K of the Dancin' Squad

Mr. K from the Dancin' Squad. He is one (of two) of my main dancehall mentors. We discuss his upbringing in NYC via Harlem and especially the Bronx were the crew (Dancin' Squad) has made their name.

We also chat about comics books, Hip Hop, house music, DJing, legendary nightclubs like Act 3 and The Fever. Dance and the passion we both share for social/party dancing is definitely covered. I ask how was the Dancin' Squad formed? Where did the name come from? How did he meet Fredlox and past/present members of the crew?

Hear about the time Fredlox once challenged dancehall pioneer Bogle in a Bronx nightclub. And finally how the squad once had a dance/battle/session with the Black Eyed Peas crew (minus Fergie).

  • My Interview of Renaissance Woman Hanna Herbertson

Hanna Herbertson is a renaissance woman. Dancer, choreographer, DJ, video editor, to name a few of the hats she wears. She is also the only choreographer who has been teaching/holding dancehall classes in NYC, for almost a decade.

Hear her story from her beginnings revolving around her adoption and her upbringing in Sweden, her influences in dance. Her travels, inspirations, struggles and wins she's had in her career so far.

She discusses her group which consists of herself, Korie Genius (previous guest which you can listen/watch here) and History and how successful they've all been in their own right. Finally she discusses her future plans.

This was a light hearted interview which I very much enjoyed. I've been taking her classes for some time, and I recommend anyone listening to do the same.
