  • My Biggest Takeaways from Mark Sanborn's 'The Fred Factor'

This post does have affiliate links.

The 'Fred Factor' by Mark Sanborn. With this book I realized, I enjoy the more personal self-improvement books and not really the ones pertaining to business. This book definitely plays to both, but more so on the business side of things.

In listening to various entrepreneurial podcasts, two of the bigger points echoed across the board, build relationships and add value. This book tells you point by point on how to do that. These may seem like common sense, but I prefer it to be spelled out and these are my absolute biggest takeaways from reading the 'Fred Factor'.

This was another book that was in Evan Carmicheal's Youtube video 7 Books Every Entrepreneur Must Read.

Here are some golden nuggets from the book:

    • 'Fred is more likely living proof that there is another less observable competitor: the job we could have done. The truth is that we compete against our own potential every day. And most of us fall short of what we are capable of doing or being.' pg 14
    • 'Here's a mystery: If you expect praise and recognition, it will seldom come. I really don't know why, but life has demonstrated repeatedly that if your motive for doing something is to receive thanks or praise, you'll often be disappointed. If, however, you go about doing the right thing, knowing that the doing is its own reward, you'll be fulfilled whether or not you get recognition from others.' pg 31
    • 'The prerequisite for relationship building is trust. At its most basic level, trust is built on believing that people are who they represent themselves to be.' pg 46
    • 'People are flattered when you make an effort to get to know them and seek information on how to serve them better.' pg 47
    • 'Good ideas are all around you. Seek out what the best people are doing. Watch and learn. Then adapt and apply. The last statement is the key. If you just copy what other capable people are doing, you'll only do as well as they do. The key is to adapt, to take good ideas from every source and then apply them with your own special flair.' pg 66
    • 'Over time, the one-a-day principle will turn your mundane life into an extraordinary life-and it will do the same for others as well.' pg 67
    • 'When you don't see much meaning in what you do, you won't bring much value to what you do.' pg 83
    • 'Those who do the best teach the best. The man or woman who can demonstrate a lesson with his or her life most powerfully impacts others.' pg 94

This is a book I will reference depending where I am in my business. Reading this book has shown me where my customer service skills should be. I've noticed slight changes in my work behavior especially at my job, it being that of a front desk clerk in a hotel.

Your buying the 'Fred Factor' through my Amazon or Ebay links (through the banners on this blog) will support the author and myself.

Thanks for reading/watching/listening. What where your biggest takeaways from what I've mentioned? Have you read the 'Fred Factor'? What did you think?

  • My interview with Amazon Reseller Jamison Philippi

This post does have affiliate links.

A long time mentor of mine in the reselling space. But in this episode we do not talk about reselling! Instead we discuss religion, dating, self improvement, and conspiracy theories. Things Jamison and myself discuss when we're not talking business.

Jamison mentions Darren Hardy's 'The Compound Effect' as a book which he was currently listening to at the time. He gives a great example from the book on how 'The Compound Effect' can make positive changes in your life over time.

When we begin talking about conspiracy theories, he brings up an interview done by Alex Jones, of Aaron Russo(click here to see the video). He says this particular video really changed his outlook on the world and what is good and what is evil.

If you are a fan of Mr. Philippi's, check out this interview. Also check out his interview on the E-commerce Momentum podcast. Incredible stuff.

  • My Biggest Takeaways from James Altucher's book 'The Power of NO.'

This post does have affiliate links.

James Altucher and Claudia Azula Altucher's 'The Power Of No'. I am a fan of Mr. Altucher's podcast and his blog. He speaks in a very 'common-sense' way to me. I enjoy his stance on going to college and owning a home. Truth be told, I sometimes think my voice sounds like his voice when I'm recording my own podcast.

Of all the books I've read so far, in this 'Biggest Takeaways' series, this one made me emotional at times and made me day dream the most. The parts especially when he discusses saying 'No' to situations that make you feel bad (even though we still willingly participate in these situations)and the 'Rebirth' exercise. The last chapter was my favorite. Specifically when they discussed reinventing yourself.

These are a few of my biggest takeaways in this book.

    • 'Being grateful is the bridge between the world of nightmares and the world where we are free to say no. It's the bridge between the world of delusions and the world of creativity. It's the power that brings death back to life, the power that turns poverty to wealth and anger to compassion. I said no to killing myself. I am still alive.' pg 24
    • 'Every time I've lost money and love, it's because I squandered my physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. Now, every day without fail, I do the Daily Practice to exercise the basic muscles of a healthy life.' pg 39
    • 'Right now is the only place you'll ever be. Choose not to waste it' pg 39
    • 'As you reflect on this, you may want to take it one step further. You are also the average of the five things you have around you, the ideas of five books you have your attention on, the feelings from the five movies or shows you watch, and so on. Your immediate environment has a much deeper effect on you than you might think.' pg 58
    • 'People who are disrespectful or manipulative early on are likely to continue the pattern. Take them at face value.' pg 65
    • 'You can't get rid of jealousy. This is another emotion that is not an on-off switch; it's a dimmer switch. You can dim the jealousy by exercising your abundance muscle.' pg 69
    • 'Try this today. Write down ten ideas for your job (or for someone else's job) that you think will add above-and-beyond value. Write down the ten next steps for those ideas. Write down the ten people you need to share these ideas with. Write to those people. Don't be afraid. The worst they can do is say no.' pg 75
    • "I want to do what makes me feel at peace. Even if it means sometimes saying no to everyone I love. To all of the stories they tell. Because that is proof that I love myself.' pg 80
    • 'The next time someone has an opinion you strongly disagree with try this: Don't argue; it's pointless. You will never change their mind. Let them state their opinion. Try to learn one thing from it. Try to respect one angle of their point of view. Everyone just wants to be heard. Listen.' pg 81
    • 'Complaining is draining.' pg 104
    • 'At some point it doesn't matter who is right and who is wrong. We are all brothers and sisters here for such a short time. Consider this for a moment while thinking of the other person. Mentally ask for the other person to forgive you.' pg 125
    • 'Truth is a powerful armor. Truth is the primal force behind all of nature, behind all of our needs. Forgive yourself and the power of nature becomes yours.' pg 125
    • 'One of the best ways to get in touch with your real self is to notice those things that you tend to passionately dislike in others.' pg 134
    • 'If there is bad news on the TV, turn the TV off. If someone is gossiping, move away or change the discussion. If the negative thoughts in your head start whispering of regret or anxiety or worry, stop yourself and replace them with gratitude and thoughts of abundance.' pg 159

There is much more that I haven't mentioned. From the few books I've covered (to date) from this blog special series, pickup the 'Power Of No' first.

  • Star Trek Beyond Movie Review with Spoilers.

There are affiliate links in this post.

Star Trek Beyond! Great movie with a weak villain. Incredible special effects, many classic sounds from the original series (transporter, communication devices, sounds from the bridge). The rotating camera work by Justin Lin was fun as well. I felt the main crew each got a lot of love in this film except Uhura, I felt she didn't have many lines. Neither the villain, which was Idris Elba. He was physically imposing, acted well, but didn't have much.

Justin Lin did a fantastic job with this movie. I hope he returns to direct the next one.

Saw this movie with a few of the boys and here are there final scores.

David scored this movie and 8/10. Myself, Jason, Mike scored this movie a 7.5/10.

Here more about our scores in this episode. Have you seen the movie? Do you agree/disagree with our review? Thanks for listening!
