  • Paulding County News Podcast: Attention Paulding turkey hunters - Turkey hunting season kicked off yesterday!

Welcome to your Paulding County News Podcast and Happy Easter.  I’m Melissa Carter, along with Doug Harding.  A teen tries to flee police, but current technology thwarted his efforts.  Plus, a collaboration between two of your favorite restaurants for a while new guilty pleasure.   But first, let’s take a look at our top stories.

    PC News

Attention Paulding turkey hunters - turkey hunting season kicked off yesterday.

Private lands are open for turkey hunting, but public hunting grounds don’t open until on Saturday, and will run through May 15th.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the turkey population faced challenges in reproduction from 2021 to 2022.

Emily Rushton, the Wild Turkey Project Coordinator, noted that while reproduction rates have dipped slightly, hunters can still expect comparable gobbler numbers to previous years.

During the season, hunters are reminded of bag limits— one turkey per day, with a total of two for the season, and specific regulations for Wildlife Management Areas and National Forest lands.

All hunters, including youth, must maintain a harvest record and complete the reporting process through Georgia Game Check within 24 hours of harvesting.

For those under 16, no license is needed, but older hunters must obtain the necessary licenses unless hunting on private land.

    Arrest Report

    From the Georgia Gazette:

A Paulding County High School student was arrested for possession of marijuana and knife in her purse, which she said she kept for protection at her mother’s house but thought she had removed it.

    Brandyy Red

Is no one concerned why this child needs a knife for protection at her mom’s house?

    Staci Cain-Carter

Maybe if this joke ass school system would ACTUALLY do something, these kids wouldn’t feel the need to go to this extreme.

    Lisa Braddock

wait a sec. What exactly would y’all expect a school to do about a kid peddling vapes and drugs with a knife? She’s not a baby … mugshots … legal adult here. I’d be more concerned if the school didn’t do this. Vape pens and marijuana are all in every school and it is a concern. What should have been done??

    Evelyn S Elsner

It has to do with politics.

    Casey Whatyousay

Lots of misinformation here. Ultimately boils down to GA certificate of Need. All additions to hospital and associated programs require approval. Approval that is most of time met with lawsuits from neighboring competitors. Can take upwards of 5-10 years to get through the bureaucracy. By then what you originally was seeking approval for is out dated. Thats why hospitals always seem “behind the times.”

    Jodi Steed

The Certificate of Need system in Georgia is what controls the medical offerings in an area. There is currently a push in legislation to abolish the CON in Ga. Call your state senators and representatives to voice your opinions.

In a move that could potentially redirect taxpayer dollars, the Georgia House Education Committee advanced Senate Bill 233, dubbed the 'school choice bill.'

If enacted, it would allocate $6,500 vouchers to students from the state's lowest-performing schools, allowing them to attend private institutions.

Advocates argue it offers personalized educational options.

However, critics caution that this may disproportionately benefit urban areas, leaving rural counties with limited options.

    PC News

The Great American Eclipse is just around the corner.

Happening on April 8, residents across the country, from Texas to Maine and everywhere in between, are gearing up for this celestial event.

Although Paulding County won't experience a total eclipse, we’ll still witness an impressive 80 to 85% coverage of the sun.

Mark Lancaster, an astronomer at Fernbank Science Center, assures us that while the lighting may change slightly, without proper protective gear, you might not even notice the eclipse.

Here are three safe ways to catch a glimpse of the partial eclipse:

    • Protective Glasses: Remember those "eclipse glasses" from 2017? If you still have them, ensure they're in good condition. If not, make sure to purchase ISO certified glasses online. Regular sunglasses or welding glasses won't cut it.
    • Shadow Boxes: Create your own with a shoebox, foil, paper, tape, and a pencil. Cut holes in the box, cover one with foil, make a small hole with the pencil, tape white paper inside, and voila! Witness the eclipse's projection safely.
    • Looking Down: Don't forget to observe the ground! The eclipse will cast unique shadows, especially through trees and bushes, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.

    Remember, safety first.

The tragic death of 19-year-old De’Asia Hart, caught in the crossfire of a shooting near a RaceTrac gas station near Georgia State University last October, has prompted her family to take legal action.

Hart was one of four innocent victims caught in the gunfire, and her family alleges that the Atlanta 911 call center failed to respond to multiple calls for help, delaying medical attention crucial for her survival.

The lawsuit will argue that both RaceTrac and The Mix were negligent in providing adequate security, despite a history of violence in the area.

In a remarkable tale of faith and resilience, 89-year-old Donald Voyles is defying stereotypes as one of the nation's oldest church planters.

Voyles, with a history steeped in ministry, has seen his latest venture, Mt. Tabor Community Baptist Church, flourish from a humble beginning to a thriving congregation.

Despite his age, Voyles' commitment to spreading the Word remains unwavering.

And he's not alone. With Georgia experiencing rapid growth, the state's Baptist Mission Board is investing heavily in church planting efforts, recognizing the urgent need for more places of worship.

As Voyles nears his 90th birthday, his passion for preaching and teaching continues to drive him forward, leaving an indelible mark on all who encounter his ministry.

    Arrest Report

    From WSB’s Facebook page:

New details have emerged regarding Jose Ibarra, accused of murdering college student Laken Riley here in Georgia.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement reveal Ibarra was arrested after illegally entering the U.S.,  and was subsequently arrested in New York before making his way South.

    Barry Joiner

The report says innocent until proven guilty while referring to the New York charge for driving uninsured and endangering a child. Well, he wasn’t innocent of violating our laws when he came into the country illegally!! Should have been deported. This has to stop.

    Kyle Rogers

He committed this crime in broad daylight because he thought he'd get away with it because no one knew who he was.

    Diane Chadwick

Makes me sick thinking what he has been “given” when he crossed the border illegally. He took a life while here……disgusting.

    Weird Story

Fans and former employees came together outside the last Hooters in West Virginia for a candlelight vigil.

Closed since March 2020, the restaurant in Kanawha City is set for demolition to make way for a gas station.

What began as a lighthearted joke on social media quickly became a heartfelt tribute, with hundreds paying respects to the eatery known for its hot wings and iconic servers.

Organizers were surprised when Hooters' corporate office sent calendars to be distributed among mourners.

Tomorrow is Leap Day, but ever wondered what would happen without a Leap Day? Turns out, it's more than just a quirky calendar quirk.

Leap year, with its extra day added to February every four years, serves a vital purpose in keeping our calendar in sync with the Earth's orbit around the sun.

Without it, major events would gradually shift, seasons would become misaligned, and holidays like Christmas might end up in the wrong season.

    That Earth's orbit isn't precisely 365 days long—it's actually about 365.25 days.

By adding an extra day every four years, we keep our calendar in harmony with celestial events like equinoxes and solstices.

So, now you know, Paulding County.
