    On this episode of Pawd Slama Jama, hosts Andy Yanez (@AYanez_5) and Da’Yon Dunlap (@DayonDunlap) are joined by guests Brooks and Dustin with the Tailgate Talks Podcast (@tailgate_talks), a Texas Tech-centered podcast, to discuss the upcoming matchup between the Cougars and Red Raiders.

    In the first segment, the focus was on Brooks and Dustin and what they saw from Texas Tech’s 63-10 victory against Murray State. They touched on what they saw from QB Donovan Smith, who was forced to enter the game following an injury to QB Tyler Shough. The Tailgate Talks hosts touched on what they liked from the Red Raiders and possible areas of concern heading into the Houston matchup.

    In the second segment (16:05), all four talk about what the matchup on Saturday could look like. What areas of weaknesses can Houston exploit against Texas Tech? And what areas do the Cougars need to have an eye on that could be weaknesses for UH against the Red Raiders.

    Lastly in the third segment (33:18), the four talk about predictions on who wins Saturday’s matchup, how Texas Tech can handle Nathaniel “Tank” Dell, and what Texas Tech fans think about Houston, just a year away from being in the Big 12 Conference together.   • Houston vs UTSA!! What challenges do the Roadrunners bring, UH O-line, running back spotlight & more!

    On this episode of Pawd Slama Jama, hosts Andy Yanez (@AYanez_5) and Da’Yon Dunlap (@DayonDunlap) talk football, football and more football. It’s game week! The two hosts talk about the UTSA matchup, focus on the Houston offensive line and running game and lastly talk about the defense aiming to establish its own identity in 2022.

    In the first segment, the hosts talk about the strengths the Roadrunners will bring to the table against the Cougars. Dunlap and Yanez focus on QB Frank Harris, the three returning top receivers and the Alamodome atmosphere.

    Then in the second segment, Dunlap and Yanez discuss the Houston offensive line. Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen has spoken highly of center Jack Freeman and how he has grown after losing his starting spot in 2021. The pair talk about Freeman, the rest of the O-line and also the running back position, including Ta’Zhawn Henry, Brandon Campbell and Stacy Sneed.

    Lastly in the third segment, Dunlap and Yanez talked about the Cougars’ defense, and how they are using being so close to winning the American Athletic Conference championship in 2021 as motivation, but also as a starting point to create their own identity.

  • Houston LB Donavan Mutin attributes leadership skills to his mentors & UH defense’s expectations

    On this episode of Pawd Slama Jama, hosts Andy Yanez (@AYanez_5) and Da’Yon Dunlap (@DayonDunlap) talk about how Houston Football linebacker Donavan Mutin grew into a vocal leader and embraced the role, about the standard of the UH defense as a whole and lastly on the UH women’s basketball team’s expectations for the 2022-23 season.

    Mutin spoke to reports on Aug. 19 as a part of the final training camp availability for the Cougars before the season gets underway. He talked about his growth into a vocal leader, and the two hosts discuss how valuable he is for Houston both on and off the field.

    Then, Dunlap and Yanez talk about the Houston defense across the board. Linebackers coach Archie McDaniel also spoke to reports on the same day and discussed what the expectations of the defense is. The Cougars are looking to put the successful 2021 season in the rearview mirror and set a new high-water mark with the program.

    Lastly, the two hosts discuss comments made by women’s basketball head coach Ron Hughey, who spoke to reporters on Aug. 19 and said he believes there is no one in the American Athletic Conference that should be picked to be preseason conference player of the year outside of Laila Blair and preseason defensive player of the year outside of Britney Onyeje.

    On this episode of Pawd Slama Jama, hosts Andy Yanez (@AYanez_5) and Da’Yon Dunlap (@DayonDunlap) talk about the University of Houston football competition battles among a plethora of positions, including running back, receiver and kicking; donuts; and the women’s basketball nonconference schedule!

    Houston Cougars head coach Dana Holgorsen spoke to reports again on Aug. 18, and while he was not ready to name key contributors at specific positions, he did talk about various players who have made plays early on in camp. The two hosts also touched on the new partnership between Shipley Do-Nuts and UH athletics.

    Then, the two hosts talk about the Cougars’ success in the red zone in 2021. Holgorsen touched on how his team is looking to continue to look for as many contributors as possible to make plays in the red zone. Holgorsen talked on the running back position behind Ta'Zhawn Henry, and the kicking position battle.

  • Houston Cougars defense: strength in numbers & QB Clayton Tune is on another level heading into 2022

    On this episode of Pawd Slama Jama, hosts Andy Yanez (@AYanez_5) and Da’Yon Dunlap (@DayonDunlap) talk about the University of Houston football defense; QB Clayton Tune as well as the receiving group, running backs and offensive line!

    Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk spoke for the first time this training camp to reporters, and he echoed the importance of strength in numbers and competition. Belk said he knows the defense lost key pieces from 2021’s team, but he is excited for several players to grow in new roles–including D’Anthony Jones, Derek Parish and Nelson Ceaser. Belk also talks about the secondary and more!

    Then, the two hosts transition over to talking about Houston QB Clayton Tune, who has garnered heavy praise from his teammates and coaches during training camp. Belk said Tune has been on another level so far in training camp, and several of his teammates said Tune is the clear-cut leader for the team heading into the new season.

    Lastly, the two hosts talk about other things that caught their eye during the week of availability, including Nathaniel ‘Tank’ Dell’s goals for the 2022 season, where the offensive line group is heading into the new season and the running back’s group.

    On this episode of Pawd Slama Jama, hosts Andy Yanez (@AYanez_5) and Da’Yon Dunlap (@DayonDunlap) break down what head coach Dana Holgorsen told reporters ahead of the team’s first official training camp practice.

    The two hosts discuss the receiving group in the first segment. Holgorsen says if the season started today, freshman receiver Matthew Golden would start at the Z slot. The Houston head coach also mentioned receivers KeSean Carter and transfer Joseph Manjack IV as other players that have stuck out during summer workouts heading into camp.

    Then, the hosts talk about the tight end position. Holgorsen said there are a lot of unknowns among the position outside of senior Christian Trahan. Yanez and Dunlap also discuss the excitement Holgorsen said he has around this team after what the head coach feels were productive offseason workouts with a level of consistency.

    Lastly, the two talk about the UH men’s basketball nonconference schedule that was released on Aug. 3, including which matchups stick out the most. The two then talk about the newest addition to the men’s basketball team, Charleston Southern transfer Darius Bowser. He is a 6-9 center, who will be eligible to play immediately for the Cougars.

    The two focus on Houston Cougars quarterback Clayton Tune, who garnered high praise from head coach Dana Holgorsen. The UH head coach said Tune has focused on working on his body heading into 2022. Also, the two break down what UH players Nathaniel ‘Tank’ Dell and Hasaan Hypolite said about Tune, which is they have seen him be more vocal during offseason workouts and more!

    Then, the two hosts talk about the Houston defense. The Cougars put together a strong 2021 season, but Hypolite said the team wants to be better in 2022. Holgorsen said the door is wide open for new stars to rise on defense with the departures of key players, such as Damarion ‘Pepe’ Williams, Marcus Jones and Logan Hall. Holgorsen also talks about the key in his defensive coordinator Doug Belk.

    Lastly, the two hosts focus on Houston being picked as the preseason favorites to win the American Athletic Conference. Holgorsen said he picks Cincinnati. Yanez and Dunlap discuss who should be favored, and they also talk about other key players that could play a big role in 2022.

    On this episode of Pawd Slama Jama, host Andy Yanez (@AYanez_5) has a one-on-one conversation with Paul Pogge, Executive Vice President for Strategy and University Relations at The Brandr Group (@tbgusa), who on Tuesday announced a group licensing agreement with the University of Houston for the university’s student-athletes covering all the Cougars’ 17 sports.

    Pogge talks about the backstory of The Brandr Group; specifics on potential Name, Image and Likeness deals that UH athletes could benefit from under the agreement; how long the agreement will last; potential merchandising products that could be on the horizon; and the ultimate vision of the partnership with UH athletics.
