  • Connecting With Strangers

An unidentified man who went by the name Sixty-Six Garage had been kept alive via life support in a nursing home for 15 years when Joanne Faryon learned about him. Her podcast, Room 20, covers her time with him.

After her mother’s death, LA Times’ investigative journalist and reporter, Joanne, began reporting about end-of-life topics. During that time, she was researching the number of people that were kept alive in a vegetative state which is what brought her to the nursing home that Sixty-Six Garage resided in. Joanne shares with Mary Payne how she came to know Sixty-Six Garage, the mission she began to figure out exactly who he was and to connect with his family, and how she started Room 20.

    Visiting Those in Nursing Home

Later in their discussion, Mary Payne and Joanne go into the story of one of Sixty-Six Garage’s roommates in Room 20 named Omar. Omar had been in an accident where he was run over by multiple vehicles and was in bad shape. Joanne happened to be visiting Sixty-Six Garage one day when Omar moved and began his recovery. Was it Joanne just happening to be in the right place at the right time? This story of Omar prompts the ladies to talk about individuals who are being kept alive who have few or no visitors at all. They ask the hard question if we are keeping people alive should we have people to sit and visit with them.

  • OJ Simpson Story Being Confronted

More than twenty years since the death of her brother, Confronting: OJ Simpson podcast host, Kim Goldman sits down with Mary Payne to chat about her experience.

If you were alive in 1995, it is likely that you, at some point, caught a glimpse or heard bits and pieces about OJ Simpson’s murder trial. OJ Simpson was accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Twenty-four years later, Ron’s sister, Kim Goldman, has finally decided to talk about the trial and her experience during it in her podcast Confronting: OJ Simpson.

For this episode, Mary Payne and Kim discuss all the various players in the trial that she talked to and who declined to be a part of her podcast. Notably, Kim sits down with two of the jurors that ultimately found OJ Simpson not guilty. She shares with Mary Payne that she was apprehensive about going into the meeting with them. This leads Mary Payne and Kim to talk about the sequester of the jurors that took place, as well as some of the outings they had. They question how ethical some of the events that took place were.

Kim shares with Mary Payne the one main player from the trial that declined her an interview for her podcast and they discuss his role in the trial and his motives.

Mary Payne and Kim also talk about the defense’s Private Investigator, Pat McKenna, who believes wholeheartedly that OJ Simpson is not guilty.

While OJ was the topic for the first season of Confronting, Kim is hoping to cover more stories that have had a great social impact on society. Mary Payne and her ponder possible topics for future seasons of the podcast.

  • Sleepless Nights Thanks To True Crime

Scott Benjamin, host of true crime podcast, Insomniac, shares with Mary Payne the stories behind his sleepless nights.

With so many true crime podcasts to listen to, have you ever wondered how the hosts mentally handle the dark, twisted, and sometimes gruesome stories themselves?

For Insomniac host, Scott Benjamin, it has not been an easy experience. Mary Payne is joined by Scott and his producer Matt Frederick, on this episode of Payne in the Pod. Scott has always had an interest in all things true crime, which led him to research many different stories, killers, and unsolved crimes. But which also led to many sleepless nights.

    Unhealthy Sleep Habits

Scott, Matt, and Mary Payne talk about the problems with immersing oneself into case after case, and how it’s affected Scott’s health. They confess that it is hard not to get consumed by the stories that they cover, and for Scott, the stories resulted in very vivid and disturbing nightmares.

Insomniac is not only a true crime podcast but also a podcast where Scott’s struggles are interwoven, which makes for an interesting twist to the average true crime podcast. His use of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, psychologist and psychiatrist visits, sleep home studies and even his sleep apnea are all part of the personal stories that he shares.

Hosted by Michael Whelan, Unresolved is a podcast that focuses on many unsolved murder cases and stories that have no ending.

Many crimes take place and are never solved, or lack an ending. Unresolved is a podcast that focuses on many of these unsolved cases. Mary Payne is joined by Unresolved host Michael Whelan in this episode.

Micheal has been interested in unsolved mysteries his entire life and decided to begin sharing them in a podcast format four years ago after following the Golden State Killer story. While his research leads to some interesting findings, he likes to put most of the focus of his podcast on cases that many people most likely haven’t heard of.

    Episodes of the Unfound

While the Golden State Killer and Zodiac Killer stories are so easy to discuss, Mary Payne asks Michael about a few of his top episodes. They discuss a few of Michael’s Unresolved episodes and if any of them have been resolved:Larry Chism, a convict who has escaped multiple times and has been on the run for 40 yearsRobert Levinson, a freelance DEA/CIA non-typical Secret Agent who disappeared near Iran, and the scandal around his relationship with the government. Chip Cambell, a man who went missing from the southern coast of Florida under suspicious circumstances. Micheal has another podcast called Hoax that shares mini stories about people who fabricated fictitious stories about their lives.

  • The “Mansion Murders” on 22 Hours

Mary Payne along with 22 Hours podcast hosts, Megan and Jack, discuss a horrific crime that took place when the Savopolous family was murdered.

In 2015, DC power couple, Savvas and Amy Savopolous were murdered in their home along with their son and housekeeper. In 2018, a previous employee of Savvas’ company, Daron Wint, was found convicted of the murders.

Megan Cloherty and Jack Moore, two reporters for 103.5 WTOP-FM, followed the murder case from start to finish through the digital reporting space. With all the knowledge they had of the trial, they compiled all of the information they had into the podcast 22 Hours: An American Nightmare.

    The Daron Wint Murder Trial

Mary Payne questions Megan about sitting through the trial. What parts of the trial were hard for her to hear as long as was any of it downright boring given the pure nature of how trials can be? One main thing about the trial sticks out to all three, however, and that is the fact that many questions will be left unanswered until Daron breaks his silence and speaks about what happened.

The Future of Podcasts for News

Mary Payne and her two guests go on the discuss the essentially 24-hour news cycle world that we now live in. They converse about how this new cycle plays a part in the podcast world.

22 Hours Podcast: What’s to Come

Megan and Jack give Mary Payne’s listeners an idea of what episodes of 22 Hours are to come, including an episode where they are prompting listeners to ask questions about the podcast/case that they may still have.

  • Theorizing Missing Richard Simmons with Doug Budin

Mary Payne is throwing everyone for a loop in this episode. Instead of talking to the host of a podcast, Mary Payne recommended a podcast to actor, writer, and Jeff Lewis Live co-host, Doug Budin. Mary Payne and Doug discuss the Missing Richard Simmons podcast hosted by filmmaker and investigative journalist Dan Taberski.

    Richard Simmons Goes Missing

One day fitness guru Richard Simmons completely disappeared from the public eye and has not been seen, and hardly heard from since. Podcast host Dan was a friend of Richard’s and since that day has not heard a single word from him. The Missing Richard Simmons podcast investigates theories behind the disappearance and interviews people close to, and involved in, Richard Simmons’s life.

    Theories on the Disappearance

Mary Payne and Doug contemplate some of the theories that Dan shares about what may have happened to Richard from the far-fetched to the realistic. Mary Payne and Doug theorize as to why it may have been so shocking for those close to him to be left in the cold and without an explanation of his whereabouts and doings.

They appreciate the picture that Dan paints in the podcast through his various interviews with Richard’s manager, brother, a detective that did a wellness check, and many more.

Be sure to check out the Missing Richard Simmons podcast, and we hope to see him in the flesh very soon!
