Grieving the loss of the companion who shared your workday, your routines, and your home.
When your pet is also your co-worker, losing them changes more than your home life. It changes the rhythm of your entire day.
For those of us who work from home, our animals are woven into nearly everything we do. They sleep beside our desks, follow us from room to room, remind us when it's time for lunch, and occasionally insist that we've worked long enough. Their companionship becomes such a natural part of our everyday lives that we may not realize just how much space they fill until they're gone.
In Episode 087 of Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, Karen Wylie and Gail Pope explore the unique grief experienced by people who lose a beloved animal who was also their constant workday companion.
Inspired by a question from Emily, a certified Animal Hospice Practitioner who leads pet loss support groups, Karen and Gail reflect on the many ways animals shape our daily routines, the painful reminders of their absence, and how love and connection may continue even after death.
Through personal stories, affectionate memories, and plenty of laughter, they explore the countless ways our animals become part of our lives—and why their absence can be felt in even the smallest moments.
What happens when you sit down at the same desk tomorrow morning, but your companion is no longer there?
Join Karen and Gail for a warm, personal conversation about the little things we miss, the routines we shared, and the challenge of moving through familiar days without the animal who made them so special. 💜

What does it mean to witness your beloved pet's cremation? And how might the experience become part of a meaningful goodbye?
In the final episode of our three-part conversation with Dr. Alice Kay Lovelace, D.Min., Alice shares how she and her husband, David, discovered the possibility of being present for their cats' cremations—and how that experience became part of their evolving approach to honoring their beloved companions after death.
Alice describes what she witnessed at the crematory, the personal rituals she created, and how she and David respected each other's different needs throughout the experience. Her story offers a perspective on pet cremation that many families may never have considered.
But their journey doesn't end at the crematory.
After the cremation, Alice and David continue honoring their beloved companion with a special commemorative dinner—a deeply personal family tradition that has become part of their way of saying goodbye.
Back at home, another ritual unfolds. Alice shares how The Empty Basket, a practice that evolved within the Lovelace household, gradually becomes a place of remembrance—and how their surviving cats participate in ways that help Alice and David recognize when it's time to put the basket away.
Through their experiences, Alice reminds us that meaningful goodbyes don't have to follow someone else's instructions. Families can discover choices, develop their own rituals, and find ways to honor the relationships that continue after death.
Join Gail Pope and Karen Wylie for this moving conclusion to Alice's story, exploring witnessed cremation, pet loss, family rituals, and the many ways love continues beyond goodbye.

How One Family Creates Rituals to Honor Their Pets at Home
What might it look like to honor a beloved pet at home after death?
After her cat Rupert died, Dr. Alice Kay Lovelace, D.Min., found herself wishing she could have kept his body with her longer. She simply hadn't known that was something a family could do.
Then Gail Pope told Alice about the way BrightHaven had honored sanctuary animals at home after death for many years. Learning about BrightHaven's experience expanded Alice's sense of what was possible and eventually gave her and her husband, David, the courage to try it themselves.
But Alice didn't simply recreate BrightHaven's rituals. She began developing rituals that felt right for her own animals and family.
In this second episode of our conversation with Alice, she takes us inside those rituals. She describes creating an honoring basket, selecting special fabrics and meaningful objects, tenderly wrapping the body, and caring for her pet's body with ice while it remains at home.
She also talks about allowing the other cats to approach and spend time with their companion after death—and about what she has observed as they come, go, and sometimes return.
In many ways, Alice and David have created their own kind of home wake for their pets: a quiet period when the animal remains physically present with the family before leaving home for cremation.
But Alice's rituals aren't a prescription for anyone else.
Even after learning that keeping a pet at home after death was possible, Alice wasn't ready to make that choice with the first animal she lost. And there is no required amount of time, particular ritual, or single "right" way to say goodbye.
Instead, Alice's story offers something much more personal: an invitation to discover what might feel meaningful for you, your family, and the animal you love.
As Alice explains, ritual can help transform grief into gratitude.

What happens when a beloved pet is dying—and you discover that some of the choices you thought were simply “what happens next” may not be your only choices at all?
For Dr. Alice Kay Lovelace, D.Min., that discovery didn't happen all at once.
It grew out of a lifetime of loving animals, losing them, asking spiritual questions, learning from the animals who shared her life, and gradually finding a different way to understand dying, death, grief, and the relationship that remains.
In this first of three conversations, Alice takes us back to where that journey began: the death of her puppy Pixie when she was seven. That loss awakened questions about prayer, God, death, and spiritual connection that would stay with her for decades.
Eventually, those questions—and the animals and people who became her teachers—led Alice into ministry, Reiki, animal chaplaincy, pet loss grief support, and animal hospice.
And then came Rupert.
When Rupert began dying naturally at home, Alice and her husband, David, chose to remain with him. But after he died, they confronted a question for which they had never really prepared:
They had always followed the familiar next steps after a pet died. Until that moment, they hadn't realized there might be other possibilities.
A later conversation with BrightHaven founder Gail Pope introduced Alice to BrightHaven's practice of spending extended time honoring an animal's body after death.
A door had opened.
But discovering that another choice exists and being ready to make that choice are not necessarily the same thing.
That distinction becomes the beginning of Alice's remarkable journey—and of this three-part conversation about what it can mean to accompany an animal before death, after death, and all the way home again.

Three pioneers of animal hospice reunite to reflect on natural dying, caregiver choice, and what they learned along the way.
Ten years ago, Gail Pope, Dr. Ella Bittel, and Dr. Kathryn Marocchino brought their experience and perspectives together to create the PEACEFUL Quality of Dying Guide: Signs of a Peaceful Passing.
In this special anniversary episode, Karen joins the three co-creators to look back at how they found one another, why PEACEFUL was created, and what they hoped it would offer pet caregivers facing the uncertainty of a beloved animal’s final days.
Their conversation explores:
Their conversation explores natural dying, quality of life, caregiver choice, and the importance of understanding what is normal during the dying process. They also reflect on the role of education, presence, adaptability, and the relationship between an animal and the person who loves and cares for them.
And the conversation looks forward, too, as Karen and Gail share their evolving vision of Relationship-Centered Animal Hospice—a way of understanding hospice that places the animal, caregiver, and their relationship at the heart of the journey.
💜 ANNOUNCEMENT: Karen and Gail also share that enrollment is now open for their new 8-week LIVE course, Relationship-Centered Animal Hospice, beginning October 13th and running through December 1st. How to Keep Love and Connection at the Heart of Caregiving
When a beloved pet is diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness, caregiving can quietly take over every interaction — the pills, the monitoring, the mobility help, the feeding changes — until it starts to feel like there's no time left for anything but tasks. In this episode of Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, hosts Karen Wylie, EdD, and Gail Pope explore what happens when animal caregiving starts to feel more like nursing than loving, and share practical, heartfelt ways to protect the relationship underneath all that care.
Drawing on more than three decades of hands-on hospice experience at BrightHaven, Gail shares stories of turning medical routines into genuine connection — from creative ways to make medicine time something pets look forward to, to the atmosphere of music, laughter, and gentle touch that kept fear from taking over during even the busiest caregiving days. Karen shares the story of her cat, Mr. Hope, and how a simple daily ritual around his heart medication became a "ritual of love" that carried them both through the final months of his life without letting caregiving crowd out their bond.
Together, Karen and Gail talk honestly about recognizing caregiver burnout, the quiet signs that a pet may be pulling away from a caregiver who has become "all tasks," and small, realistic ways to build in moments of pure connection — no task attached — even on the busiest care days.
Whether you're managing pills, subcutaneous fluids, mobility support, or simply trying to stay present with an aging or seriously ill pet, this episode offers both permission and practical tools to remain your pet's person, not just their nurse.

Why every pet parent needs a plan for end-of-life decisions they can't make in the moment. Losing a pet is hard enough without having to make every decision in the moment. This episode walks pet parents through how to write a pet advance directive—naming a backup decision-maker, defining quality of life, and choosing between natural death and euthanasia—so your wishes are clear before a crisis hits.
IN THIS EPISODE
Gail Pope and Karen Wylie, EdD talk through what belongs in a pet's advance directive—and why writing it down now, while you can think clearly, spares your family guesswork and regret later. They share personal stories, including Gail's conversation with her daughter Kirstie about her own advance directive, and Karen's approach to documenting wishes for her Australian Shepherds, Chey and Livy.

2 Kinds of Caregiver Regret, and How to Move Forward From Both. "We did our best" is the phrase pet parents hear more than almost any other after a loss. But what happens when the honest answer is more complicated than that? In this episode, Karen Wylie, EdD and Gail Pope respond to a listener's comment that named something they'd never fully put into words — and it changes how they think about regret going forward.
A listener named Wendy left a comment on Episode 21 (their original episode on regret) describing a specific kind of guilt: seeing a known sign of illness, minimizing it, and not going to the vet — even when the eventual decision turned out to be the right one. Karen and Gail realized Episode 21 had only ever covered one kind of regret. So in this episode, they name two:
Karen and Gail get personal here. Karen shares the story of nearly missing the signs of her dog Chey's partial cruciate ligament tear, and a decades-old memory of trusting her gut with a Birman cat's mysterious eye symptom. Gail opens up about the very present, very raw decision she's navigating right now with her cat Maisie — kidney failure, subcutaneous fluids that terrify her, and the daily argument she has with herself about whether she's doing enough.
This episode won't tell you there's an easy way to silence that voice. But it will help you name what you're carrying, understand where it comes from, and start finding your way back to self-compassion — whether your regret is about a decision you made, or a sign you noticed and let go.💜

When a pet parent calls in a panic and says, "I don't know if this is normal," they're almost always describing one of a handful of very predictable signs. In this episode, Karen Wylie, EdD and Gail Pope walk you gently through what actually happens in the body as death approaches — so that if you find yourself in this moment, you'll recognize what you're seeing instead of fearing it.
We cover:
Gail also shares something unusually vulnerable: her cat Maisie, adopted just a couple of months ago, stopped eating two days before this recording — and Gail talks through her own panic, in real time, even after thirty-plus years of doing this work. It's a rare, honest look at what it feels like to sit inside the process you've taught others how to navigate.
Whether you're facing this moment right now or simply want to be prepared, this episode will help you recognize what's normal, know when to reach out, and trust that you don't have to have all the answers — you just have to stay present with love.💜

If your pet died while you stepped out of the room, or you weren't able to be there in their final moments, you may still carry guilt about it. In this episode, Karen Wylie, EdD and Gail Pope close out their four-part series on hospice myths by exploring the tender territory of being present at the time of death.
We tackle three deeply held beliefs that can weigh heavily on pet parents:
Along the way, Gail shares a deeply personal story about being present at her husband Richard's death, and what it taught her about letting go. She also tells the story of her granddaughter Emma and a beloved cat named Elvis — a moment that reshaped how she understands children and natural death.
Whether your pet is still with you or you're carrying grief from a loss in the past, this conversation offers real permission: you don't have to be in the room at the exact right moment to have loved well. You did your best, and you did it with love. And that is enough.💜

Caring for an aging, seriously ill, or dying pet can be filled with love, uncertainty, difficult choices—and moments of extraordinary connection.
Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, hosted by BrightHaven founder Gail Pope and educator Karen Wylie, explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of animal hospice and end-of-life care. Through compassionate conversations and practical education, Gail and Karen help pet parents better understand what their pet may be experiencing, recognize changing care needs, communicate with veterinary professionals, consider difficult decisions, and care for themselves along the way.
Episodes explore quality of life, comfort and palliative care, caregiver overwhelm, anticipatory grief, natural dying, euthanasia, after-death care, memorial rituals, and the continuing bond we share with our animals.
Rooted in BrightHaven’s decades of experience and a relationship-centered approach, this podcast honors three intertwined journeys: the pet’s journey, the caregiver’s journey, and the changing relationship between them.
You do not have to know everything or face this journey alone. We are here to help you find greater understanding, steadiness, and peace of mind—while making every moment count.
