It has taken years for organizers to plan massive celebrations in Philadelphia for America’s 250th birthday, and it all comes to a head Saturday night with a concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and a late-night fireworks show.

The union representing PECO workers says they’re still far from a new contract, and they are now on strike. The work stoppage comes amid a busy holiday weekend, an extreme heat wave, and pending thunderstorms.

As we celebrate America's 250th birthday this weekend, Independence Hall will be center stage as people explore Philadelphia. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is known around the world as the place where American Democracy was born in 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But as hard as it is to believe, this iconic landmark almost ceased to exist at one point.
