We’re in August. And without a FIBA tourney this summer, we’re in the really quiet part of the offseason. The NBA schedule will be released within the week, but with free agency transactions mostly done, there’s not a lot going on a court until training camp starts in late September. But we’ve still got plenty of Magic questions and topics to discuss.

Whatever Magic fans believe the 2026-2027 Orlando team will achieve this upcoming NBA campaign, one common opinion is being shared across the basketball media landscape: this Magic squad is expected to be a play-in team again in the East. The relatively quiet offseason from Jeff Weltman’s front office has invited these tepid viewpoints. But are those opinions justified? Will the Magic really not be a top-6 seed in this stronger Eastern Conference?

The Magic still have their 15th man roster spot open as some rumored names as signed with other NBA teams. Also, Desmond Bane is very underrated by non-Magic media.

UPDATE: Apologies if you’re seeing this episode appearing again in your feed. The show’s intro needed to be redone. Hope you don’t view it as a downgrade. It’s a sad time for Magic fans. This Orlando franchise is lucky to have had David Steele call its games on radio and television for all 37 seasons of its existence. Unfortunately for us, there won’t be a 38th. David has retired. And with his exit, that’s four enormous legendary voices with great importance to this team that have left us over the past six years. Dennis Neumann was fired during COVID, Pat Williams passed away two years ago, Paul Porter was forced out last year, and now David has retired. Those men are like the four horsemen of deeply impactful voice that now won’t be in our lives. That are irreplaceable, that have not been properly replaced, and thus this Magic fan base is weaker for it. Watching and hearing Magic games is worse without them. And we’ve just concluded Summer League. Now we’re really in the NBA offseason.

We’re in Summer League mode. How have Jase, Penda, and Nelson looked? With Izaiyah, he just broke his ankle so that’s a big setback for him. Could some extra roster shuffling happen based on these other Magic performances? Will Anthony Black get a contract extension? Will Goga Bitadze be moved?

It’s been a frustrating wait as Magic fans watch other East teams improve while we stayed relatively quiet. Until July 1st, where Orlando announced a lot of predictable and mostly underwhelming Jeff Weltman signings. Moritz Wagner says goodbye. But there is some good news, Nikola Vucevic is back.

It’s very difficult to be optimistic about this franchise’s future when the man tasked with improving this Magic roster continues to sit idly by while other East teams catch up. Just look at the Southeast division alone. Our rival Miami just got a top-5 NBA player. The Hawks keep building depth. Charlotte got better by dumping LaMelo Ball. Even the Wizards now have AJ Dybantsa. Orlando drafted Izaiyah Nelson with the 51st pick. What else do you have, Jeff? Free agency begins June 30th.

We finally got to see and hear Sean Sweeney accept the Orlando Magic head coaching job. As his coaching staff gets filled, the NBA Draft is this week. Jeff Weltman may not even be heard from on day one of the draft, as we only have the 46th pick. It’s clear some type of roster moves need to be done, but don’t tell Jeff that. Whether the Magic get involved in Giannis Antetokounmpo or not, a lot of league-wide action seems to be delayed.

To massive relief, the Magic are not hiring Billy Donovan to be their next head coach, but instead it’ll be 41-year-old highly-praised San Antonio Spurs associate head coach and experienced NBA assistant Sean Sweeney guiding this Orlando franchise next season. The good news is Sweeney’s official introduction will be delayed because he’s got his second NBA Finals to partake in. This is an enormous hiring for the Magic, and if done correctly, Sweeney could be with our franchise for a very long time.

The Magic are in offseason mode. We found out Jeff Weltman was hiding his contract extension after all. So there will be no new President of Basketball Operations. There will be a new Orlando Head Coach as Weltman fired Jamahl Mosley around twelve hours after our Game 7 exit, and it certainly feels like Billy Donovan already has the job.
