The Orlando Magic are preparing for a new era as Jamahl Mosley has officially departed for the New Orleans Pelicans. He leaves behind a foundation built on accountability and step-by-step growth. Those are the final lessons Mosley can impart to the team as he moves to his next job.

As the team prepares for a new coach to arrive, they will be building off the foundation and the lessons of the last five years. That new coach will need to focus on the day-to-day process to get the team to its next steps.

It is time to turn the page and look ahead to next season. And that starts with the work the players are putting in to get their desired destination.

The Orlando Magic are entering a new reality as a tax team. That makes the contributions from their draft picks and rookies even more valuable because of their cheap contracts.

The Magic were struggling to get a lot out of their last two rookie classes last season.

Tristan da Silva made some important steps and became more consistent. But he went invisible in the Playoffs and the team ultimately did not trust him, making his future a bit more mysterious and uncertain entering his critical third season.

Jase Richardson and Noah Penda looked like rookies. Both will need to take steps up for next season, and neither has a guaranteed future with the team.

The Orlando Magic face a pivotal offseason as they begin to face the consequences of their escalating salaries and the NBA's restrictive luxury tax aprons. The Orlando Magic are inching closer to hiring a new coach with Jeff Van Gundy, Billy Donovan and Sean Sweeney the only reported names on the Magic's list.

This is the big decision of the offseason and the first domino that must fall for the team this offseason. Everything else the Magic need to accomplish is waiting for this decision to be made.

While the Magic's process is not taking any longer than it normally would, the delay has consequences. The Magic have already begun to lose key assistant coaches that a new coach might want to retain to other jobs. And a new coach will need to put together his staff quickly ahead of a busy offseason.

Orlando is not expected to make major changes to the roster this offseason. And so the smallest decisions to build depth and improve the team will have major consequences for them.

The Orlando Magic have closed the book on their 2026 season and are starting to look ahead to the 2027 season.

The Orlando Magic's season came down to the play of their stars. One star was injured most of the season, and the other struggled to rise to the occasion.

The Magic's future depends on Paolo Banchero getting himself right and learning from a clearly frustrating and down season. Stars are what drive teams and push them to improve. And the Magic did not get everything they needed from Banchero this season.

Despite the struggles, Banchero still showed signs of progress. And like the team as a whole, Banchero simply struggled to put all the pieces together. He and the Magic are not far from being where they want to be.

The Orlando Magic's coaching search took an interesting turn on Tuesday.

The team's preference for experience reaffirmed the favorite, Billy Donovan. But the sudden dismissal of Jason Kidd brought another accomplished and experienced coach to the table. Someone the Magic must consider and likely interview at this late stage as they winnow their candidates.

The dismissal also brought something else: Competition. The Dallas Mavericks may now have the best job available on the market, increasing the urgency for the Magic to get their man and hire their first choice before it is too late.

The Orlando Magic's coaching search continues in relative silence. The only reporting suggests that the Magic prefer to bring in a coach with experience to help lead them to the next step.

It sets up one of the central debates for the Magic's search. Do they go with a coach that has an established track record and certainty or do they roll the dice on a coach getting his first shot at the lead chair with the potential to do so much more?

Certainly, assistant coaches must prove something a bit more. They have to sell the team on a vision without evidence. That does not make it impossible. But assistant coaches in this coaching search need to have their ducks in a row and present a clear vision for the team to break through the clutter.

Time will tell who the Magic end up hiring.

The Orlando Magic were considered the it young team in the league entering this season. But a disappointing season and a third straight first-round exit have brought a lot of questions to the team.

But they face one undeniable reality: They are no longer inevitable contenders. The Magic must enter this next season having to prove themselves and their potential all over again. Nobody is going to expect them or hand them anything.

And the reality is that the Eastern Conference is more competitive than ever. The Magic are one of the reasons for that. The margins in the East will only get narrower as teams continue to improve. The margin between a top seed and the Play-In will be very small.

So, how close are the Magic to their contention dreams? Not so far away. But the final gap between a Playoff team and a true contender is a wide gap the Magic must bridge beginning this offseason.
