Boxer Sammy Leone is a proud indigenous man who uses his boxing as a platform to help Australia's youth discover their cultural identity through sharing their story. This is a thought provoking episode which will hopefully lead to amicable debate and open discussion.

The operator of The Boss Boxing in Brisbane, Sammy's own career saw him training in the Australian development squad at the Australian Institute of Sport as a young man. This experience along with 90 amateur fights, and several professional bouts and a State Boxing Title put him in a respected position to help others faced with the same challenges he faced growing up.

Sammy now works in the education system and sees preservation and sharing of culture as a key motivator to what he does. His shirt says it all, "Yarns Heal". He wants to help educate others about why the injustice of the past should matter, and how education can build a pathway to reconciliation and healing for all generations involved.

In the latest People with a Passion podcast, Laurie Kelly of Brain Friendly Training shares how he teaches trainers to engage learners and explains why students need to understand how they learn. Laurie is considered among the best Master Trainers in Australia. A former school teacher, he identified the education system was failing some students. Fast forward almost 4 decades and Laurie is now a highly sought after consultant helping corporations improve their workplace training including the mining and health sectors, as well as trade and apprenticeship providers..

Early in his teaching career, Laurie realised kids were dropping out or failing and needed answers. Fast forward almost 4 decades Laurie is now a sought after consultant helping corporations assist with education in the workplace including in the mining and health industries, as well as trade and apprenticeship course providers (RTOs).  Not happy with the status quo, he worked to understand why the education system was struggling to help everyone learn so travelled the world learning and developing techniques to arrive at a model of Brain Friendly Training. 

We all learn differently, Brain Friendly Training endeavours to unlock the behaviours and characteristics individuals gravitate to when trying to learn. He teaches teachers to apply practical approaches to aid in learning outcomes for students. He also helps us all better understand how we learn and provides methods we can all apply to improve our own learning process.

Author Jenny Woolsey shares her story of being born with a facial difference, her struggles growing up and her motivation to help others embrace difference. Her message... "Be Weirdly Wonderful!"

Jenny has always looked for the best in the world despite its cruelty at times, as a child she was bullied. In her words: bullied "from the day she was born" when her parents being told due to her craniofacial difference - "not to take her out into the world". Growing up in school was torture for Jenny and at a young age surgery offered some hope of "normalcy", but it took multiple operations.

Today Jenny has turned her childhood adversity into a strength, sharing her story at schools and with other born with a physical difference to help all better understand how the world is experienced through the eyes of someone who was born to stand out.

Jenny is now and author of multiple children's books, a public speaker and an advocate of embracing difference. She has overcome adversity and now help others, including her own children, he face the world while being born different.

Jacob Lee Welch is an artist, but not your average artist, hats and shoes are his canvas and manga and cartoons are his passion. After his life hit a rough patch, Jake was diagnosed with clinical depression. Realising something had to change he turned to his lifelong passion as his therapist. 

In a rut, a simple photo of some painted shoes shared to him by a friend, revitalised Jake and that day he gave himself purpose. Within hours, he set about to start playing with the medium as a canvas. Before long he found people wanted to buy his creations. From there spawned an enterprise which keeps him focused and at peace with himself.

Jacob works when everyone else sleeps. Like many artists it is this deep work and constant failures to arrive at his desired vision that keeps him driven in his day to day. This is an inspirational story of a former school teacher who has rediscovered the best parts of who he is, through exploring, creating and painting.

Brian Kerle is an Australian basketball legend and icon of the sport. He is an Australian Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. His involvement spans over 5 decades as a player and coach at all levels of the game. Including 3 NBL Championships. He is the only NBL coach to win a championship with an all Australian team. He represented his country at the World Championships and the Olympics. He has coached multiple professional teams to varying success and now works tirelessly to help minorities and disadvantaged youth gain access to the sport he loves. A true legends of the sport and among Australia's greatest of all time.

Traditional limb difference devices can cost thousands of dollars and need to be replaced as children grow. Australian engineer, Mat Bowtell is changing lives by creating and sharing his Open Source 3d print prosthetic designs with the rest of the world. 

3 years ago after being made redundant when Toyota ceased manufacturing in Australia, Mat was forced to consider his future. Today he is confident he has found that future. His passion and purpose; to help others with limb differences improve their quality of life. One of those he helped, 3 year old Izzy, was so grateful her and her mother nominated FREE 3d Hands for the Sunsuper Dreams for a Better World grant. Mat has made the final 6 and needs votes. Winning will help him increase production and innovation.
