Christ the King - Sunday Year B - 2024
Reading Daniel 7:13-14
Reading Rev 1:5-8 Gospel John 18:33-37
There are two words, which describe Jesus, and are sometimes used to mean the same thing. They are King and Messiah. The charge written on the cross as INRI includes the title “King of the Jews”. The temple authorities didn’t like this because it meant Messiah to them. Standing before Pilate, Jesus is faced with the Roman misunderstanding the term in another way. He asks Jesus “Are you a king?” Jesus makes it clear that he is.

Father Manuel Ruiz López and his seven companions, the brothers Francis, Mooti, and Raphael Massabki, Father Joseph Allamano, Sister Marie Leonie Paradis, and Sister Elena Guerra, canonized by Pope Francis, each exemplified heroic virtue and bore witness to holiness within their unique vocations.
As the Pope noted in his homily at the Canonization Mass in St. Peter’s Square on World Mission Sunday, “These new saints lived Jesus’ way: service.”

1st Reading Deut 6:2-6. 2nd Reading Hebrews 7:23- 28
Gospel Mark 12:28-34
Over the last few weeks Jesus has given some examples of how to love our neighbour. His way is a way of service. This is given by practical examples of how to show love by “paying attention to”. Today, Mark pus this into the form of a commandment, “Love your neighbour”. Perhaps if we change the term neighbour to brother or sister we can begin to understand the kind of love required. The object of our love has to be seen as someone important to us and the quality of attention given to them has to be equal to that given to a loved one. In fact it is in paying attention to them in this way which fulfils the commandment to love.

”What do you want me to do for you?”
Jeremiah 31:7-9. Hebrews 5: 1-6
GOSPEL Mark 10:46-52
In response to Jesus, James and John asked for glory and honour – one wanting to sit on the right hand, one on the left. This week Bartimaeus asks for his sight to be returned. These episodes selected by Mark can be read in another way, rather than the obvious.

He will give full attention to you.
Blessed So;anus Casey did the same.
Have you ever been ignored? Well now is the time to turn towards the loving gaze of the Lord.

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Thou my inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only, be first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art
